Is anyone here a pear shape that has found their signature style?

I've been reading a thread about style and I can sympathise with the op's feeling of being lost!

I had my colours and style done this year and found it all utterly baffling! I'm hoping to find some kind of coach on here to stear me through it all?

I know I'm a pear - I'm not sure about all this low rise / high rise business! I don't like things that are too frilly or fussy but I feel I am a boring dresser! I like classic styles but I don't really need to wear them in day to day life so I'm at a bit of a loss really - also being warm is very important to me especially in winter as I feel the cold a lot! Being warm doesn't usually go hand in hadn with being stylish!

Anyone got any words of wisdom for me?

Ok I must be a skinny pear as I don't have a muffin! I am quite tall , 5'7", but my legs are proportionately quite long and I am short bodied. I'm not even sure I am a pear anymore after reading this thread!

Just been reading what makes a pear -
Wider hips and thighs
Narrower shoulders
Wider bottom
Smaller bust
So I'm not as I have broad shoulders and an average bust. What would that make me? Confused

InvaderZim · 08/02/2012 13:21

I dunno dexter, I'm kinda in that same boat and I've never figured it out so I dress like a pear on bottom ( a line skirts FTW) and on top my rules are no raglans, v or scoop neck, fitted to body to show off shape.

Helltotheno · 08/02/2012 13:25

dexter I still do consider myself a pear even though, like yourself, my shoulders aren't exactly narrower than my hips and my boobs aren't huge but not small either. In my case, it's more that my shoulders are smaller in general, but not narrower, than my hips/thighs comparatively.

When I see my shadow, my hips look really wide in comparison to my top half!

I avoid:

  • low-rise, cos my torso is long and low-rise make me very shortarsey
  • figure-hugging galaxy-style dresses cos they make my hips look HUGE
  • tight-fitting skirts, just all wrong
  • tops that end half-way down my arse/hip-length (don't flatter any part of me)
  • dresses that have a band round the waist and flare out..v. hippy on me
  • palazzo trousers or ones with wide fit all the way down cos they make me lumpy on bottom half
  • straight jeans, cos with my not-so-small legs, they just look like baggy skinnies - all wrong

dexter if you have the definite waist you are a cello ! Some other body shape thing I read somewhere but it stuck as I have average bust too.

LesserOfTwoWeevils · 08/02/2012 13:27

Another pear here. Low-rise trousers, definitely!
I tend to wear classic clothes, occasionally go for drama or a spot of romantic.
I can't wear A-line skirts as they accentuate the width of my hips.
Also have to be careful of fit-and-flare for that reason?that shape only works in a light, flowy fabric. But I do look for clothes that show off my (relatively) small waist.
Empire-line dresses can be a bit iffy for that reason?they can conceal your waist and make it look as if you're huge all over. Tunic tops and smocks can have the same effect.
Pencil skirts are good. I wear them for work a lot with short jackets that nip in at the waist. My legs are my best feature so I wear knee-length skirts.

iseenodavidcopperfield · 08/02/2012 13:27

Recalls it was on a Trinny Susannah prog.

dexter73 · 08/02/2012 13:40

Just been looking at the Trinny and Susannah shapes and I think I am more an hourglass than a cello, as I don't carry any weight on my stomach. Still don't have big boobs though! It's all very confusing.

sonicrainboom · 08/02/2012 13:50

Here is a good guide:

youlookfab.com/2010/04/22/how-to-dress-the-pretty-pear-body-type-2010/

Helltotheno · 08/02/2012 14:11

That's a good article and I have to say I do stick to those guidelines mainly, so I know I'm a pear even though I'd prefer be an hourglass. Some good tips there about heels v flats and trouser length etc ...

Bunbaker · 08/02/2012 14:41

"Another pear here. Low-rise trousers, definitely!"

I wonder if it has to do with how tall you are. Low rise trousers on me feel unsafe, but I am tall.

sonicrainboom · 08/02/2012 15:03

Low-rise doesn't work on me at all (unless I want to randomly show my behind to people), I'm of average height. Of course, everyone's body is different so even though someone has a pear type body there is still going to differences on what suits them and others.

sweetheart · 08/02/2012 15:12

oh sorry - just come back to this and seen it's taken off a bit.

Well the reason I'm baffled a bit is......

All of it was an awful lot of information to take in in such a short space of time. The colours that were picked for me are ok but some (most) of them I don't really like?!?!? I'm finding it quite difficult to incorporate them into my wardrobe and find myself sticking to the neutral's I was given (navy blue, beige, grey) which makes for very dull dressing!

The shape analysis thing I think was a waste of time (maybe the person I had it with) basically she said I could wear everything so long as it was a certain style - like 3/4 length trousers when I know for a face they look utterly shit on me! I didn't get a booklet as such to look back over - I did get something written down so perhaps I should re-visit and pay a bit more attention.

I think the problem is I get bored of wearing the same old things day in day out which makes it quite hard for me to have a staple wardrobe. I ALWAYS find myself getting sucked into the latest fashion which is probably why I look rubbish most of the time!

I did order a couple of bits from ASOS yesterday so maybe I'll learn that fit and flare is the way to go - unfortunately I think it will probably accentuate my giant arse!

I think I am a long bodied / short legged pear (?????) which makes my pearness all the worse because I'm look short and fat! Sad

Just checked out body shapes and I am not any of them Confused.
If you're only using apples or pears, I'm definitely a pear.
But I have broad shoulders, and slender(ish) legs despite wide hips.
I'm not an hourglass or a cello because I'm very flat-chested.
Clearly I am a freak. Sad

sonicrainboom · 08/02/2012 16:16

No of course you're not a freak. Humans come in all type of shapes, the pear, apple etc thing is just a general guide. The thing is to take the advice from these type of guides that applies to you. Not everything is going to apply to everyone.

Abzs · 10/02/2012 12:26

Depends how short you are Mirai... At 5'2", I quite like the current crop of 'mini' dresses - they're respectable lengths on me.

I'll second nickelhasababy on red. My wedding dress was a scarlet prom dress. I tried white and looked awful. This also means my dress has been worn numerous times since, including other people's weddings!
