I have dry dead skin around my fingernails, how do I get rid of it?

I've always been a nail biter, I have stopped many times but always end up biting them again in the end. This time I've got into the habit of chewing the skin around the nails - yes I really am ashamed, it's very embarrassing. I'd like to go and get acrylic nails again as its the only way for me to have nice nails, but now I have three fingers where there's lumps of dead chewed skin. I've tried lashings of hand cream, I don't know if I should file the dead skin off or not. Nothing is helping does anyone have any ideas?

I don't like admitting this in public, but I clip off dead skin with the nail clippers. If it's not too bad, I use an emery board to file it down.

I rub Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream in around my nails and cuticles - fab stuff.

I use opi avoplex exfoliator - it is a cream and you pop it on your cuticles before going to sleep. In the morning your cuticles are smooth and easy to push back. If I get a bobble of skin (I open alot of letters and can never get in the habit of using a letter opener) then I too snip them off with nail clippers - I would never snip my own cuticles though. So, use a cuticle remover and oil your cuticles as often as possible (I have a bottle or a pen of oil by every sink, in every bag, and by the sofa and the bed - there is no excuse).

Oh Havingkittens that looks terrifying I'm not sure that I'd be safe with that device!

MrsMartin I'll look into the opi stuff, sounds great.
