I'd like to go to a personal stylist.
I need help with clothes. I'm 40 and I want to look like me but I don't know quite how to do it. I don't want office wear or clothes for a night out and I don't want to look like a Boden-wearing clone. I have a huge list of things I refuse to wear (like polyester chiffon) - I think I'm a tough case. Ideally I want someone who has been through the mothering years and understands how the body changes and that fashion isn't the main thing but that frumpiness is depressing. I'm put off by stories I've heard of people going to a dept store and getting sold a heap of clothes and having to take them back.

I also want some makeup advice about my colouring, but I want it from someone who isn't my age and trowelled in hideous makeup, or about 19 and fresh as a daisy and doesn't know how to acknowledge crow's feet without going quiet. I don't want to be sold stuff, I want to know how to buy stuff.

I really want an expert who can take me through why certain clothes/colours/makeup look better than others and give me a list of what to look for, but someone who'll talk confidently and give honest appraisals. Is this a realistic thing to look for?

OK, I know this thread has been dead for awhile, but I just have to say that I was searching for some help sorting out my wardrobe and found this thread. I took the plunge and contacted Caroline-

www.style-bureau.co.uk/

I honestly was such an amzing experience that I cannot recommend her highly enough. She suggested things I never would have considered and feel like I suddenly look slimmer, younger and more stylish. She went straight for the high street brands, so didn't cost a bomb. Brilliant!

Just wanted to ressurect this thread to say thanks to those who recommended Caroline of the Style Bureau www.style-bureau.co.uk/. Today I was out shopping with her (after a morning of her going through my wardrobe having a good old sort out and clear out). We shopped in high street chain shops that I would never have considered going in, and I now have a bunch of clothes that fit, are flattering and make me feel a LOT more on-trend. So happy. Can't recommend her enough.

The lady who runs Avenue 57 runs a stylist service. She can either go shopping with you or help you to do a wardrobe assessment and make more of what you already own. She's a mum so she knows what that's about......

I also read Styleguile's blog and would let her make over my wardrobe any day if I had the money :)
