Joules wellies - are they hardwearing?

They are pretty but I have quite chunky calves and find Hunter wellies a bit tight so would Joules ones fit any better?

Not in my experience no. I had a pair as a present and the insoles moved around inside which wasn't comfy, and one of the straps on the sides fell off. They aren't wide in the calf either. I would say look at men's Wellies perhaps, as the calf is wider.

4madboys · 06/02/2012 21:28

i had a pair, and no i didnt find them that hard wearing the split in the end, on the feet and so i got wet feet, most annoying. i now have a pair of boden childs wellies, (small feet!) and they seem fine and were only £12 in the sale!

i have had a pair of royal horticultural society ones, they were a sunflower pattern and i loved them, they lasted brilliantly, they are normally expensive but i got them in tkmax.

hunter wellies are also meant to be good.

reddaisy · 06/02/2012 21:34

Thanks, Hunter wellies are a bit too tight. I can get them on but they pinch at the top a bit. And I don't want mens ones as I my feet swim around in them so I can't win and I want something a bit prettier. I will google royal horticultural ones now.

I like the patterns of the Joules ones though and the prices are reasonable!

My wellibobs split after less than a year, they're cute & comfy but not much good to me! Search on MN for more threads on good wellies other than hunter.

4madboys · 06/02/2012 21:47

the royal horticultural ones were def wide on the calf! they had an adjustable bit as well, they are expensive tho so see if they have a sale or ebay? or tkmax! i loved mine to bits, when my boden ones wear out i will get some again.

oh garden centres sometiems have some good wellies, we have notcutts near us ( i think its a national chain of garden centres?) and they have some nice wellies in at the moment, not too expensive :)

TapselteerieO · 06/02/2012 21:56

My spotty Joules wellies only lasted a year, I wouldn't buy another pair, I liked the design and colour but they perished.

reddaisy · 06/02/2012 21:56

Thanks 4boys. We have a one of them not too far away actually, I will give it a try when I am next in the area. I am on ML and suddenly my days revolve around jumping in muddy puddles and wading through snow etc again so I need appropriate attire.

Tapselteerie0 0 thanks. No-one rates the Joules ones so far then!

I got some national horticultural ones from M and M Direct. They are quiteloose on the legs, I wear them with pink fleece hunter wellie liners. Chav but nice and warm for walking the dog.

ChickensGoMeh · 06/02/2012 22:01

My Joules chicken wellies peeled after just three months. I was most disappointed :(

4madboys · 06/02/2012 22:03

i have to trudge across a field to get my middle two to school so wellies are a must! and i like them wide enough to tuck my jeans into. i am relieved to hear that others have had problems with joules wellies as well, i wondered if i gave them a hard time!

interestingly my ds3 is currenlty wearing a pair of joules wellies that did belong to ds2, so the problem doesnt seem to occur in their childrens wellies!

VinoEsmeralda · 06/02/2012 22:06

If you have large calves the ones to go for IMO are Aigle. Bought mine over year ago and wear them every day and still in vg condition.

Joules& hunter both poor quality. Only have experience of kids ones but neither lasted long.

reddaisy · 06/02/2012 22:09

4madboys - I think that is it, I want to be able to wear my jeans tucked into them comfortably and speedily in the mornings. My mum is very outdoorsy and she has said Hunter wellies used to be excellent but the quality has gone down recently with the colour rubbing off etc.

Aigle, no they don't do pretty patterns but they are hardwearing and fit larger calves.

reddaisy · 06/02/2012 22:12

Vino - I have never heard of Aigle - I will google them too!

well my boden wellies are a bit snug tbh, but i can just tuck my jeans in, they are childs wellies tho so i guess they are designed for childsize calves/calfs (sp) i do like them tho, they are a really funky print and were a great price so even if they only last one winter that is fine. i want funky prints as i do wear them a lot and i want them to look nice. i think i will look at royal horticultural ones again next time, they lasted brilliantly and i LOVED my sunflower ones.

if you google funky wellies you get lots come up! joebrowns does some nice looking ones but i have no idea re quality, tho their clothes and another pair of boots i have from them seem to be fine.

Grockle · 06/02/2012 22:14

I have huge calfs and Argyle Wellies (made by hunter but their farming range apparently). Hard wearing - worn daily in muddy chicken yard/ in forest/ on beach

Almacks · 06/02/2012 22:16

My Joules ones only lasted a year, tried again and the second pair split/perished within a year too. However, I have found that whatever the matt rubbery stuff they make the patterned wellies out of is, it perishes, wether the wellies be Clarks, Joules or garden centre. OTOH, DH's standard £9.99 green jobs have gone on and on.

DuchessEm · 06/02/2012 22:21

My Joules wellies have lasted ok so far! Keep my feet dry, no peeling, no splitting and I have used them many times for trudging through muddy woodland!! I've had them about 18 months.

Bienchen · 07/02/2012 08:23

If you can live without the fancy colours I can recommend something like the Stylo riding boots, completely waterproof and non slip sole. Cost about £40? Quick blast with a hosepipe and you are good to go. They are also fab in snow and are lined, so a bit warmer than wellies.
I have quite chunky calves from digging, but can still wear them with skinny jeans. Also Aigle wellies are still being made in France (but dearer I think than the Stylo). Hunters are now made in China to a much lower spec, even the farmers are giving up on them, nuff said. Le Chameau used to be great (I had a pair that lasted me about 8 years and they are workwear for me!) but are so expensive now I was looking for a cheaper alternative.

daenerysstormborn · 07/02/2012 08:28

dd is heavy footed and her joules ones seem to be lasting well, but imo, the best, cheapest wellies are the plain green rubber dunlop ones.
