OK how much clothes storage space do you have...and how much do you need?

We're having major de-cluttering before the house becomes a building site later this year - and I'm trying to plan how much wardrobe and clothes storage space to put into our new, organised and super-minimal bedroom....we don't have a big bedroom (I guess its about 14ft by 12-ish) and it is overpowered by ugly but unfortunately quite practical IKEA wardrobe.
So go on, tell me where you keep your clothes and how much space the average MN needs....
We have:
For me: About 100cm hanging space; big chest of drawers with 4 large deep drawers about 120cm wide; 3 small IKEA basket style drawers.
For DH: About 80cm hanging space; small chest of drawers with 4 drawers about 80cm wide.
It is all always crammed full but I'm sure I only wear about a quarter of the clothes I've got!

I keep looking at our bedroom, I hate it! I need some new furniture!

We have a single wardrobe each, crammed full. And a tiny chest of drawers for undies and socks.

Ive got ikea wardrobes, we have one each. We each have 100cm hanging space, dh has one of those trouser racks and a basket. I have two baskets, a shoe rack and a shelf. (everything is 100 cms wide) It's not enough. I put my jeans on the shelf, and tshirts in one of the drawers, but I still don't have enough hanging space. Ideally I'd like another 100cms, and another shoe rack. I guess three wardrobes would be better.

elliott · 23/01/2006 12:08

Yes but where would you PUT three wardrobes? I don't even have space for 2 really. Our IKEA one is 120cm but the taller height so we have room for two hanging slots - but it is really huge and ugly.

I have a built in double wardrobe, with shelf and a small drawer unit for underwear. DH has the same. Think DD has the most space, slightly!

We sort out clothes and stuff out and throw things if not used for a certain period of time. Had less storage at the apartment so got into the habit there.

expatinscotland · 23/01/2006 12:10

Short answer: not enough

Solution: I'm ruthless when it comes to clearing out clothes that no longer fit, are too worn, don't like anymore, etc.

Mum2Ela · 23/01/2006 12:12

I do not hoard anything, everything goes in the bin. Saying that, we have a dressing room thats prob, the size of a small box room and 3 large drawers each outside of this and a large cloakroom downstairs (roughly size of a big downstairs loo) for all our shoes and coats, and we still manage to fill all the space! I hate clutter though, so everything has to be away in its place and anthing not used for a while goes in garage / attic.

Kelly1978 · 23/01/2006 12:17

maybe u shud look in ikea again, soem of them are quite nice. We've jsut got plain mirrored ones. I think I might have been ok if we could havbe had the taller ones, but our ceilings aren't high enough. We couldn't fit a third unless we got a smaller desk.

Kelly1978 · 23/01/2006 12:18

mirrored ones are good in a small room, makes it look bigger.

elliott · 23/01/2006 12:19

Oh, and do you all do that 'putting away out of season clothes' thing? I've never got round to that - don't have anywhere to put them away to for one thing....

We (I) have a large mirrored wardrobe from IKEA. I really like it actually, unfortunately I think I could do with another one!I seem to have loads of clothes but don't want to get rid of anything. Much to dh's despair!

MrsBadger · 23/01/2006 12:23

We were lucky enought to buy a house full of fitted wardrobes:
DH has 100cm hanging w shelves below and 100cm pigeonhole things, also 2 drawers of chest of drawers for pants & socks.
I have 100cm full-length hanging (shirts, dresses, best trousers) and 100cm shelves (everything else). My drawers in the chest of drawers are full of makeup, jewellery etc.
Spare room has 100cm coats, wetsuits, waterproofs etc.

My shelved wardrobe is really, really useful - baskets for socks & undies; jeans, jumpers, pjs etc folded and stacked. I move out-of-season stacks to the back so longsleeves and cardis are at the front in the winter, shortsleeves and vests in the summer.
I wonder how I ever coped before...

Also do a ruthless charity-shop run - if you didn't wear it last summer or haven't worn it yet this winter, ditch it. I did this and DH said 'oh thank goodness you're getting rid of that, it's always looked awful' . Very liberating!

JonesTheSteam · 23/01/2006 12:23

Not enough!!!

Probably have too many clothes though, rather than not enough wardrobe space.

Kelly1978 · 23/01/2006 12:26

i put the out of season stuff in the basket. come summer i will hang up the tshirts and put jumpers in he basket. dp doesnt need shirts for work now so they are in the loft.

elliott · 23/01/2006 12:28

This is interesting - I thought I was goign to find that I had much less storage than most people, because I never have a thing to wear (!) - but I find that most people can manage with less space than I have . Must do a ruthless clearout methinks....
