-17°C: what would you be wearing?

Alright, today the temperature here was -11°C! Tomorrow the weather forecast is predicting -17°C Shock
Can't stay huddled up at home, as the kids have to be in school at 8.30 and I have lectures at uni all day (I'm a mature student).

I'm usually a pretty smart dresser, but at temperatures like these, I'm afraid style is likely to go out the window!

So... what would you be wearing if you were me?

an entire polar bear or two, probably

Gumby · 06/02/2012 18:15

Where do you live?!

I'd wear thermals & a balaclava

Popbiscuit · 06/02/2012 18:22

You'll be okay. Must you walk to school? Hat, mittens, scarf and your warmest coat are a must as are warm socks and warm boots. YY to a balaclava if you have to walk any distance. If you wear your hair up you can mostly avoid static and hat-head. Moisturizer and lip balm. Thermal tights under your trousers to avoid chill-blains.

If you have lots of driving to do, stash an extra blanket, socks etc. in the boot, just in case.

In the Alps! But it's not usually so cold, even here. Even in winter!

Today I wore a long, flared cord skirt with fleece leggings underneath (I know, I know!), a vest top under a short-sleeved T, under a long-sleeved T under a fleece polo-neck, with a big pashmina-type scarf, a ski jacket, woollen beret and sheepskin (ugg-style) knee-high boots with woolly ski socks inside!

But tomorrow is going to be even colder Confused, so I don't know what to add for extra warmth!

Ohhh that was here (perthshire) last winter with several feet of snow. Flat boots...dubarry's were good. Thermal socks-more than one pair. Thick tights under jeans or trousers depending on how smart you need to be, big hat and huge scarf and layers that mean you can be a reasonable temp when indoors ......emmm also i avoided getting out the car as much as possible!!! But as it went on for weeks and weeks we kind of got used to it! Good luck!

vitaminC · 06/02/2012 18:27

Thanks Pop. School is a 10-minute walk from home, then I catch a tram to the university.

No balaclavas, but we'll have to wrap our warmest scarves around our heads.
Even my eyes were cold today. I think I'm going to launch a range of thermal burkas for next winter... :o

Took DD to Lapland in December and it was pretty cold there. I relied on thermals. Thermal vest and tights, heat generating long sleeve top, cashmere polo neck, jeans, thermal socks and ugg style boots.

Venturing outside, I put on a knee length quilted coat, hat, scarf and gloves.

Keep warm x

vitaminC · 06/02/2012 18:30

Thanks running. I hope this doesn't go on for weeks! I hate being cold :-(

I can't get my flat to a decent temperature even with the heating on full blast, so we're sitting around like a bunch of old grannies with woolly blankets over us!

In fact, I'm thinking of going to bed very soon with as many hot water bottles as I can find :)

Uniclo thermals ! A bright knitted stripy scarf and a hat in one of the colours from scarf.sheepkin mittens (am coveting ugg ones) .knee length down coat like mrsebojones(nice blog btw). Lots of layers underneath so you don't boil inside! My river boots with ski socks inside.
(and a bowl of porridge so you are warm from the inside!)

vitaminC · 06/02/2012 18:38

Good idea about the porridge, drywhite! I usually have porridge, but have been late up the past few days and have sneaked a nutella sandwich in my bag so tomorrow I need to get up slightly earlier and make sure we get a hot breakfast!

Put your tommorow's socks on tonight, sleep in them and keep them on in them morning. You'll have toasty feet all day.

vitaminC · 06/02/2012 19:10

Sounds like a good idea, Bike. I can't sleep with cold feet anyway, so ski socks sound heavenly :)

Long johns, lined nylon pants, woolly socks or ski socks in Ugg style boots or boots lined with thinsulate, long undershirt or long sleeved thermal underwear top, polo neck tunic in woolly/fleecy yarn, big scarf wrapped babushka style around neck, face and head, thick heavy ski type gloves, and vaseline over exposed skin on face. Coat -- large down filled abominable snowman style. That was me in northern US winters. Happy days... You need to make sure your ears are covered. Ditch the beret and get something with earflaps.

CardiCorgi · 06/02/2012 21:01

Had cross-country ski training at -14°C yesterday, so I sympathise.
Do you have a buff? I use mine as a balaklaver when it's cold with a ski hat over the top. The buff then gets used as a headband to disguise hat-hair when I get indoors.

To go to work I've been wearing a down jacket and a hat I bought in Moscow where they know all about cold weather. A moisturiser with no water in is a good idea if it's really cold, Weleda do one which is quite popular here.

TapselteerieO · 06/02/2012 21:02

We have had pretty lovely weather in the N.E of scotland, beautiful clear skies with lots of sun, no snow - but last year I was out in freezing temperatures everyday, it was well below freezing for weeks on end and I had a mile walk (trudging through all the snow kept me warm, but my hips ached) to school and back, but in the afternoon I had 30 minutes between dd and ds finishing school, so it could be pretty cold being outside for that time.

I wish I had my uniqlo heat tech jeans then, but I did have heat tech thermals, layers of socks and furry boots, I also had my Merrell Haven. A warm hat, good gloves and a scarf. I wish I had been organised with a flask of coffee for the school pick up.
