Can't afford GHD's

As the title says really, I'd really like sone decent straighteners but is there a cheaper alternative to GHD but still gives good results?

Thanks in advance if you have any recommendations

What's the budget? You can get GHD's for excellent prices or second hand.

PrimaBallerina · 06/02/2012 14:00

You're going to have to save up a bit longer. There's nothing cheap that will give the same result.

ruby22 · 06/02/2012 14:05

I agree. Have never found anything as good. I have had mine for around 8 years. There's always ebay?

Gingerbics · 06/02/2012 14:26

Ok thanks, sounds like they're worth saving for then. Always worried about them being the genuine article if bought from eBay but will have a good look. Thanks! X

Or ebay some other stuff to buy them new??

ImpatientOne · 06/02/2012 14:36

Just to 2nd what others have said so far, they really are worth the money. I bought some around 10 years ago which I have now left at my in-laws (abroad) and I have a newer set that I bought about 3 years ago as they work in the USA and that's where we went on honeymoon so wanted new ones!

I also have a set of Cloud 9 travel straighteners (about £40/£50) which my hairdresser uses and are tiny I bought them as I travel a lot with work but they are nothing like as good as the GHDs, I just wish they would do a travel version too as I would snap them up!

MadamTwoSwords · 06/02/2012 15:14

I had tresemme before my GHD's were bought for me as a gift. They are pretty good and if I hadn't got the GHD's I would have carried on using them.
Now they are just sat there looking unloved!

theonewiththenoisychild · 06/02/2012 15:22

I cant afford them either mine broke ages ago got travel straighteners then got tresemme ones from dp for christmas they'll do for me. Ive got very long hair and cant fault them

TheBluehoneyDragon · 06/02/2012 15:32

My GHD's were eBay£30, and genuine. The seller sent the reg no so I could check Smile

I have a Nicky Clarke set that temporarily replaced my GHD's that broke down after 6 weeks. (As an ex hairdresser my GHD's were very precious to me and usually stand up to the rigours of being used for 3-4 hours a day 6 days a week) I can honestly say that they are just as good. They heat up to 230 degs like GHD's do. When I got my brand new GHD's back I sold them on and kept the Nicky Clarke ones. If I went back to hairdressing I'd probably get more GHD's but for personal use my cheapies perform very well. Also as an aside don't fall into the habit of using straighteners on unprotected hair. It doesn't matter what the brand, whether they are mirrored, tiled, ceramic, metal etc. They will ruin your hair. Buy a protectant.

Raeray · 06/02/2012 18:40

I can second the recommendation for the Nicky Clarke straightners- I've got some and they're brill! I got mine on offer in boots for about £25/35.

mrsmartin · 06/02/2012 19:01

My friend is a session stylist and she recommends the yogi straighteners. I think they are about £80 but you can get the set on qvc of the straighteners and the curling wand and then ebay the wand. The set is £100 but you could sell the wand for at least £50-60, so that would make the straighteners really affordable.

I don't straighten my hair - I would look like pochahontus if I did - but the curling wand is the ONLY heat tool that has ever put a curl in my hair and kept it there (yes that includes curls made by ghd's in a salon) and I don't put any holding product in with them, just hair oil. Worth a look.

Reduced GHD's. Still dear, but still...

I have the Babyliss ones and they are good... but I have used my friends GHD's and they are better. I hanker after some.

Gingerbics · 10/02/2012 13:33

Thanks for all the replies lots of great cheaper suggestions too really appreciate that will get buying some. Have a great weekend everyone!Grin

I have some Remington straighteners as spares. I found they did just as good a job of the straightening, but were less kind on the hair than GHDs.

redpanda13 · 10/02/2012 16:24

When my sister stood on my GHD's I bought some Babyliss ones and they are good. Mine were about £20-£25 on offer in Boots. My GHD's are fixed now but I have kept the Babyliss as spares. I also use them if my DD wants her hair straightened as they have a temp setting.

HurricaneBawbag · 10/02/2012 16:31

When GHD's came out 8-10 (?not sure) years ago they were the best by miles. But they have not kept up with technology and are very prone to breaking and having faults. I have had 2 pairs and am using babyliss 230's just now. New technology means less well known brands are hotter, have smoother coatings, cheaper and also have better guarantees. I would not bother with GHD's again unless they came down in price.
