What should I do with my wavy frizzyish hair?? Have included pics!

Hi all, I have curlyish but very fine hair. To look more 'done', I straighten it to within a inch of it's life with ghd's (so that it almost looks spikey!). I want to get a decent cut and will probably go dark with colour as it looks thicker. I am just not sure what kind of cut to get to suit me especially as I have quite chubby cheeks and a roundish-square face. I generally use a straightening hair protection spray on it and have it straight the days I go to work and leave it curly the days I don't. On these days it looks like a frizzy mess as it doesn't really 'hold' a style ifykwim. I must reiterate, it is v v thin because of medication I take so I can't use products that are too heavy. Please recommend any kind of cut/products etc! Ps I have used the BBH and like the outcome but it only holds for about 2 seconds. I need to wash my hair every other day as it gets oily too. Have put some pics up for a short time - thanks!

You have a very pretty face - how about going a bit shorter, but with longish layers and letting the curl do its thing? The 'curly' styling lotions often add a bit of body.

clucky80 · 05/02/2012 14:32

Thanks Bobbin Blush. Hmm I wouldn't mind going a bit shorter. I do find though that it just kind of hangs like curtains when I wear it down though so I am not sure if I need to get some more shape cut through it? Can you recommend any styling lotions? The only thing I usually find that works is mousse but it does make my hair a bit crispy!

Moroccan Oil is good for taming frizzies, you can use it with both curly or straight styles. It's also good for the general condition of your hair.

The only 'curly' product I've used is the Aveda 'Be Curly' one which was good but pricey - but there are lots more on the market now. If you google 'curly hair products' there are a few websites dedicated to the subject. John Frieda products are usually okay I find.

MrsSeanBean · 05/02/2012 14:44

Your hair has a lovely wave, it looks great in your pics with whatever you'd done to it then! :)

Have you also tried Moroccan Oil, or John Freida frizz ease serum is also good, I find, though both might be a little heavy if you have fine hair, or necessitate more frequent washing.

The other product I found (unexpectedly) helped my frizz prone hair was GHD heat protection spray. The GHD shine spray is also good for taming post styled frizzes.

Style wise, after a life long experimentation, I've found the best cut for me is long (grown out) type of fringe, with long layers (short enough to allow the wave rather than an unruly triangle effect) but long enough to control fuzziness. HTH.

MrsSeanBean · 05/02/2012 14:44

sorry x posts with bobbin on the M/Oil!

gemma4d · 05/02/2012 14:48

John Frieda serum is terrible for adding oil, but I use their shampoo and conditioner and find them effective and pleasant.

Would like to second that you look lovely in that photo!

clucky80 · 05/02/2012 17:14

Thanks so much everyone! I think I will give the morrocan oil ago and the ghd heat protection spray :) I have used the John Frieda stuff for my hair before and it does make it a little oily. I think I am definitely better to go more with the curl of my hair rather than straighten it so much. I have regrowth all over my hair too which is great as a sign that it's thickening up a bit but it looks like I have tufts everywhere so hopefully the oil/spray will help. In the pic I have just used a Nioxin hair protection spray. Their stuff is really good for thinning hair and it definitely thickened up using the shampoo/conditioner/spray combo. Thanks for the advice on cuts too - when Bobbin and MrsSB say long layers, do you mean long all of the way round or shorter round the front to frame my face ifykwim?

Another vote for Morroccan Oil here. I also love the Avon Frizz control shampoos and conditioners, they really work on my frizzy mop! You only need a tiny amount too and they often have deals on.

MrsSeanBean · 05/02/2012 19:29

Clucky - steer away from shorter at the front - more difficult to control IME.

BobbinRobin · 05/02/2012 19:34

Yes I would agree, take the layers up at the back rather than the front.

cyb · 05/02/2012 19:47

I woudl go chin length curly bob and scrunch

chocolateteabag · 05/02/2012 19:53

How about a brazilian/keratin blowdry?
Getting it done in a salon is pricey I know and leaving your hair for 3 days without a hairband before you wash it is a pain. But I have had this kit from amazon for £28 which has pretty much worked as well as the one I had done properly. It was a bit of a faff washing it and doing the straightening myself (mega arm ache).

Cut wise - I think a long choppy bob maybe a bit longer than this would be versitile both curly or straight (and you could quickly grow it down)
this one of heidi klum is a bit longer but similar kind of this
hth

neuroticmumof3 · 05/02/2012 20:40

I'd definitely recommend having a brazilian blowdry. I bought a kit from ebay for about £20 and a friend did it for me. It's absolutely life changing and I haven't needed my straighteners for 2 months now.

clucky80 · 06/02/2012 09:04

Thanks so much everyone for taking the time to post :) Chocolate - I really like the Heidi Klum longer bob! I'm not sure if it would suit my roundish face and chubby cheeks though but I really do like the style so may speak to a hairdresser. I often go into the hairdressers with lovely pics of hairstyles but sadly suited to those with lovely thick, straight hair and angular features! I just want to look a bit more 'groomed' ifykwim? Sometimes when I go out I feel like if my hair is curly and a bit frizzy I look unkempt! I saw the pics on S and B of Lucy-Jo Hudson yesterday and her hair style looks so perfect and she looks so well 'done'. I know that hairstyle would never in a million years suit me but I just want to look a bit more polished. I think that may be one of those things though that you either have or haven't got and I guess alot of it is down to confidence and how you hold yourself. Anyway, I digress....Chocolate and Neurotic - I have asked about the Brazillian blow dry before but because of my hair being so fine it wasn't recommended. I have had lots of quite traumatic surgeries and have to take strong medication including immunosuppressants which have a really detrimental effect on my hair so I have to be really careful. Also when the levels of drugs are higher in my body I lose alot of hair as a side affect so I don't want to put chemicals on it that make it more brittle. I do think the bbdry would be a great remedy but luckily as my hair is v fine it hardly takes any time atall to straighten.

Hi, can't seem to find your pics. I have fine wavy hair but with the right cut and products it looks and feels thicker. Also colour will make your hair appear thicker.

Pseudonymity · 06/02/2012 09:32

I have similar a similar hair type to you. I've currently got mine long (too long). My hair icon is Keira Knightly as she has a similar hair type, very fine, dark, wavy. She sometimes has it straight but there are loads of pictures of her with shoulder length wavy hair that I'm (trying!) to channel after years of lusting after having straight, thick Japanese type hair.

clucky80 · 06/02/2012 09:33

Hi Joanna, thanks for replying. What kind of cut do you recommend and what kind of products do you use? My pics should be on my profile. I go through stages where I think I will grow it and it's medium length now. I have had a short bob which was okay but I had to blowdry it straight every day and I don't think that short suited me. It was just a standard bob though without any layers etc. I am definitely going to go darker again, at the moment it's a horrible rusty colour with some old highlights left over. Whatever colour I have it it eventually goes back to a reddy brown colour!

Joannamobilebarber · 06/02/2012 13:12

Longish bob with layers and defo colour to roughen it up a bit, that would give you more body

valiumredhead · 06/02/2012 13:22

Much shorter and embrace the curls!

clucky80 · 06/02/2012 13:28

Okay - I've definitely decided to go shorter. I am thinking of a longish bob touching my collar bones with layers. Do you think it should be longer at the front? Sorry for so many questions ladies - for years I've either had hair that I cut short and detest then spend ages growing it back into a style resembling curtains before chopping it all off again! I am also going to put the ghd's away for a while and maybe use to BBH again or even buy the new smaller ones I've read about on here!

OP posts:
Joannamobilebarber · 06/02/2012 22:14

Definitely longer towards front

hellymelly · 06/02/2012 22:29

I also have very fine, curly hair.Mine fell out a lot after each baby, and went straighter, and then I had curly regrowth,so that was quite..um..interesting. I waited until the new growth was about two inches or so and then had it all chopped to that level.Looked pretty actually, short and curls all over my head. Now I have a chin length bob but I may go a bit shorter again. I am not sure about moroccan oil,I think it suits thicker hair better. I am always looking for good products. The kerastase ranges for fine hair seem to suit me best. The key for me seems to be getting my hair into as good condition as possible (I have highlights so it gets rather wrecked)and then washing it every day, leaving it dry naturally and then leaving the curls alone.I don't always manage it. You look lovely in your pictures and your baby is gorgeous too!

clucky80 · 09/02/2012 13:28

Thanks for your message Helly :) I've got the curly regrowth thing going on at the moment, i've got all these fluffy 'bits' everywhere and they curl around my hairline too! I think you might be right re the Morrocan oil. I bought a hair protection anti age thing the other day in the hairdressers that is really good - it was £27, I nearly fell over when they told me but it is v good and will last ages as you only need a couple of sprays. I like Kerastase but have only used their coloured hair s and c. Is the green one the one for fine hair? I have used their oleo curl spray and cream but didn't get on very well with them. I am currently letting highlights grow out (a moment of madness in the Summer!) and I am getting a dark colour put on later today and that def gets it in a better condition. I would love to cut my hair short like yours but I don't think it would suit my face shape and also, I'm not very confident and hide behind my hair a bit!

My regrowth was very odd,I had the hair of Tony Bennett under the hair of Francis Rossi. It was not a good look.

hellymelly · 09/02/2012 14:54

(I am quite (cough)old to have small children,so you may not know who either of those are !
