Dotty P's - bit disappointed, size-wise

Another sizing thread... I ordered a top (one I'd seen on a MN thread, as usual Grin) and it came yesterday - it's a size 18 but is really really small....

Now I've lost a load a weight and seem to be in most size 16s at the moment and 18 tops are usually now very comfortable/often too big - hoping to keep shrinking but am gutted the Dotty P top is so tight on me. Sad

Do you find they tend to come up small, or is it because I'm very old and dotty p is actually for youngsters many years younger than me...?

just to say this is my first Dotty P's purchase - am usually a Monsoon/Debs/la Redoute girl...

I think cheaper shops do tend to come up smaller size wise.

boredandrestless · 04/02/2012 15:27

I find the opposite in Dorothy Perkins, can buy size 14 tops and coats in there, most other shops I'm a 16 up top.

Lareine · 04/02/2012 15:29

i find dotty p the worst vanity sizing. I can get in a 10 and I'm a 14.
might not be true as they go up the sizes tho

MrsCampbellBlack · 04/02/2012 15:31

I'd say it very much depends on the style but generally DP tend to be generous. But you may have got a wrongly sized one - don't be disheartened because of one random top though.

PastGrace · 04/02/2012 15:35

I find them really unpredictable - I've tried on dresses that have looked very similar in terms of cut but with a different fabric - size 12 in one, 16 in another.

Don't let it throw you - well done for losing the weight.

DottyDot · 04/02/2012 15:43

oh no! Sad Am v disheartened now... Although even when I first picked it up it seemed so small I checked the label inside the top - feels much more like a 14 to be honest, but it definitely says 18.

I'll have to go inside a shop and check out some other 18's just to put my mind at rest I think - hopefully it's a one off and mis-labelled...! And dp's a size 14 - might make her try it on although that would mean I'd have to confess to having bought it Grin

oh to fuck with sizes. i am the same size i was a decade ago, (confirmed by clothing that dates that far back) which was a uk 12. I fit a dotty p 14, sometimes that is too small or ill fitting.

i could two farts in a high wind for sizes, i pick stuff that looks like it will fit, try it on etc.

it is v childish, but when i see people posting that x store uses vanity sizing, and that they can always get into a size -46672 (implication, OP is a moose) i do wonder who they think they are helping

i always want to respond with, well yes, but you're ugly, and tactless to boot

SharkBite · 04/02/2012 15:47

Was it one of their 'brands' Dotty? i bought 2 tops a few weeks ago, one from each of 2 'brands'. one was in XL and the other a size 10 HmmConfused

Realistically i am a 12

DottyDot · 04/02/2012 15:48

Grin I'm just annoyed because I work full-time, teach the piano in evenings/weekends and don't get the chance to go clothes shopping so I buy on-line for most stuff.

So I went for an 18 top 'cos I knew it would fit well.

Ah well - am keeping it in the drawer on the very slim chance that I'll do a bit more shrinking - it can be a nice Autumn 2012 top...! Smile

also their clothes are mainly crap. they are like a down at the heels next. i can't be arsed to trawl through their dreck, i find new look better for that kind of cheap n cheerful stuff, and their sizing is far more consistent

MrsCampbellBlack · 04/02/2012 15:52

My aunt used to go into m&s and hold up every size 12 in a skirt to find the biggest one as there was so much variation in the sizing and she was most definitely a size 12 Wink

I do think the style is key too - I don't have much of a waist so anything that is very structured - I need to size up.

I also don't like tshirty tops to be too clingy so size up in those too.

DottyDot · 04/02/2012 15:54

Think I'll stick to Debs - love Rocha John Rocha and their sizes are nice and generous Wink. And la redoute for the cheaper stuff - I'm a very pleasing size 16 or 14/16 in their clothes which feels much more marvellous Grin

Best to stick to ranges that cut for your shape definitely.

And well done on weight loss - I too am dieting and lordy tis dull. Especially on a snowy afternoon when all I really want is cake.

salamanda · 04/02/2012 15:58

I wouldn't base any assumptions about their general sizing policy on one top. You know what size you are (if you don't know, measure yourself and look at a few retailer's sizing charts to get an idea) and you know whether you've lost weight or not. I'm sure DPs quality control with respect to sizing is absolute crap!

salamanda · 04/02/2012 15:59

Go to Reiss - you will probably be a size 6 there :)

DottyDot · 04/02/2012 15:59

Agreed it's very dull - the only not-dull thing is having to buy new clothes Grin

DottyDot · 04/02/2012 16:00

oooh really?! Am loving Gap jeans at the moment - I'm in dp's old jeans which are marvellously labelled a size 12 (actual 16) Grin

OP posts:
salamanda · 04/02/2012 16:04

Yep, Reiss are VERY generous with their sizing just not so much with their pricing. I always need a size down in River Island too. Anyway, none of this matters - just do what my great-grandma always did: cut out all the labels and carefully sew in a size 10 one (seriously)

DottyDot · 04/02/2012 16:07

Ha! I'm pretty sure that even with another two stone off, I'll never be able to get away with pretending to be a size 10! A lovely 14 would be just perfect - one day Grin. And yes, just had a look at Reiss - those prices (and I was checking out the sale stuff) are a bit bloody outrageous out of my budget...

OP posts:
MrsCampbellBlack · 04/02/2012 16:10

Reiss are stopping their vanity sizing apparently.

salamanda · 04/02/2012 16:17

Are they? I wonder how that will work. Will they relabel their size 4s size 8s or start making their size 4s actual size 4s? We could take our kids there then!
