What sorts of things do you over 35s wear?

It might sound a bit of a daft question, but I posted on here recently asking for advice on a dress and it turns out I might have frumpish tendencies.

It's got me thinking I need to revisit my wardrobe - but I have no clue where to start.

I've just turned 38 - I suppose I'm feeling a bit old and I'm fed up with the clothes I wear (generally jeans and boots with shirts or a top seems to be my staple).

I don't have much of a budget for clothes, so I suppose I need to start with a few basics and learn how to accessorise.

Any advice would be welcome.

Herbs, behave!

Ihatethecold - that website is all too real, I'm afraid. DH bought something for FIL from Chums once, so we are now on the mailing list.

Chums is a lesson to us all - what happens when you relax into elderly dressing.

You wear what you like and what suits you, and bugger your age.

Go into a shop you like. Have a look at the mannequins, posters, displays, shop window to see what they've teamed with what and copy that. Try it on first, mind you.

CeliaFate · 02/02/2012 19:33

I'm 41 and have discovered the joys of dresses - long sleeved, knee length worn with thick tights and knee high boots. You're totally covered, look smart and can disguise a tummy with a long scarf.

crypes · 02/02/2012 19:42

If you use that website you might as well as call it a day.

I nearly lost the will to live when I clicked that link!

Herbs, stop scaring people with Chums Grin

JoantheFennel · 02/02/2012 19:51

I wear jersey dresses, leggings and boots.

GoingForGoalWeight · 02/02/2012 19:56

Laughing at Chums, just wear what suits your shape! I like Desigual :)

JustHecate · 02/02/2012 19:57

Today I am wearing a pair of black silky trousers and a magenta tunic with 'angel' sleeves.

I used to wear black with black and black on top and then I realised that was really rather dull and depressing Grin so now you can find me in pink, red, orange, yellow...

I have my own gravitational pull Wink so I wear long tunics rather than tops. Nothing that doesn't come halfway down the thigh makes it through.

GoingForGoalWeight · 02/02/2012 20:07

Sounds nice Hecate. Where you get your top from? :)

JustHecate · 02/02/2012 20:09

fashion world.

slapmeonthepatio · 02/02/2012 20:11

Maybe I'm not so bad then - I wear a fair few of the things you've mentioned (skinny jeans, boots, shirts, tunic tops & jersey dresses) but I think maybe I need to buy things that go together, and pick a few colour schemes and I must learn the art of scarves, bags, necklaces (hard with a 13 month old) and some nice sunglasses.

And then there's the hair. I'm in a hair limbo. Shoulder length with a few layers, growing my fringe out and resisting the urge to have it cut into a bob/have it cut short.

Blue skinny jeans? Tesco you say...

Fashion world looks good! Thanks for that JustHecate :)

slapmeonthepatio · 02/02/2012 20:16

I think the problem is, that being a mum of 4, I don't get to go shopping. Well, never on my own. If I go, I'm on a deadline for the nursery/school pick up or I have small children who don't like shopping and tolerate me trying on clothes even less. So I end up shopping online and, of course, you don't get to try things on in the same way. I'm not very good at sending things back, so I keep them and think I may as well wear them now that I've bought them. But they don't look right and I end up feeling a bit rubbish.

You're welcome. They've got some lovely stuff on there.

I do wish so much of it wasn't bloody strappy tops though.

GoingForGoalWeight · 02/02/2012 20:21

I've not seen swimdresses before. I wonder if anyone here would wear them? I'd need to cover up on the beach, was looking at tankinis.

JustHecate · 02/02/2012 20:22

Oh yes, I've got one. Long skirt, comes halfway to my knees when wet. I love it.

GoingForGoalWeight · 02/02/2012 20:28

Can you wear your swimming dress in the hotel swimming pool and in the public pools here in UK?
I'm getting one. Lovely cheap Joe Brown owl bag oooh Grin

There are some lovely things on that site! Spotted a lovely leather satchel bag in brown. Excited now!

Take a look at Fashion World OP :)

Gapants · 02/02/2012 20:29

I think the key being put together and feeling good are the details--
Great hair cut and colour
Earings or Necklace/Beads you wear every day
Clean, neat clear polished nails
Clean shoes/boots
Quality sunglasses
Quality oversized bag
Basic make-up-- for me, concealer, a pop of colour on my cheeks, mascara and a swipe of juicy tube.

I wear skinnies, long line t-shirts and then woolly/holey jumpers layers over the top a lot now with short brown, ankle cowboy style boots. Or thick woolly tights, jersey dress and biker boots with cardi. I have THE MN scarf and a wide balkiest black cashmere one that I wear all the time. I have a black pea coat from GAP, and longer smarter coat from a boutique in Amsterdam and a leather biker jacket.

JustHecate · 02/02/2012 20:30

oh yes. It is a swimming costume. Swimming cossie material.

ihatethecold · 02/02/2012 20:36

CV. I cant believe your on the mailing listGrinBlushWink

MrsCampbellBlack · 02/02/2012 20:38

Oh please don't forget to return stuff - think of the money!

I do prefer premium denim brands - James Jeans twiggys are fab and were on the outnet this week.

And definitely to good sunglasses.

In the spring a pair or nice skinnies (perhaps coloured), drapey t-shirt, sunglasses and good bag and you're off.

I've never had my colours done but I do know what works and the older I get the better I am at choosing those colours and then know that they'll work with my existing wardrobe.

If you've got the budget its worth making sure you've got some good basics and then just build on those.

I don't do tunics or leggings because its just not me but as I say am a tad mutton - hence my love of white jeans Wink

bessie26 · 02/02/2012 20:47

I'm 39 & dug out my pre-pg, non bf clothes the other day & discovered that they have all mysteriously shrunk, so I need to do some serious clothes shopping

GoingForGoalWeight · 02/02/2012 20:53

I;m so looking forwar to going swimming now Hecate Grin Just hope i'll be OK at the public baths.

AllPastYears · 02/02/2012 21:06

Ha, ha herbaceous.

I was tempted to give a similar reply, e.g. "As an over-35 I favour beige slacks and crimplene."
