I need a nice dress

I'm off to a wedding in May. I've got a bit of weight to lose first, but that shouldn't be a problem.

I'm looking for a nice dress and I've seen this one but there are one or two negative comments about it - mainly regarding the brightness of the colour. But it I can get away with bright colours (I think) and the style should be flattering.

I've looked online at Monsoon, House of Fraser, Next etc - but nothing's really grabbed me all that much.

Is there anywhere else?

Thanks in advance.

Wallis on line have some nice dresses for 'occasions'.

Thank you I shall have a look. I never seem to remember Wallis!

who is giving you negative comments on that dress? It looks great! beautiful colours and super easy to accessorise! When I am at a loss I always go for a 3/4 sleeve wrap dress in either a heavy jersey or a non-satiny silk - It never fails to look chic and is always accommodating of weight fluctuations (so I don't have to change my outfit at the last minute due to a fat day!). I use Mango, Zara and Hobbs.

Phase eight, LK Bennett & Hobbs are always worth a look imo

I was reading the comments on the Boden website. People who'd bought it etc. Mostly they were positive - but it's the negative ones that stick in your head isn't it?

I feel I'm going to have to ditch the children and have a day where I can actually go and try things on properly. In peace.

How old are you ? Im 40 and it looks a little frumpy to me (sorry )
Dorothy Perkins have some nice dresses online.

Phase Eight, Damsel in a dress, Wallis. If in doubt head for John Lewis, House of Fraser or Debenhams where you can try on lots of different ones at the same time instead of traipsing round different shops.

I'm 38. I guess the fact that my Mum also liked the dress, and is considering it for the wedding, too (I won't buy it if she does, though) - made me have a rethink.

I love dresses - and I'd rather buy somthing I could wear again (not that we get out much with 4 DCs!).

What do you think about wearing black to a wedding? I've seen some really lovely dresses (and there were some lovely ones on all the websites you've all suggested) - and I'm naturally drawn to them, but I'm not quite sure of the etiquette. A bit too funereal, no?

Black is fine ime/o - especially if its accessorizing with light/bright colours (e.g. black and cream or black and fuschia). I would say that a good 30% of guests at weddings I have been to in the last few years (including my own) have had black on

slapmeonthepatio · 31/01/2012 15:50

Actually a few people wore black to our wedding but our wedding wasn't all that conventional.

This is the other dress I love. It's merino/wool though - too hot for May? Is this less frumpy? The only thing is, I think it's less forgiving and I'd have to get some really good underwear to hold everything in... Grin

Have a look at Reiss - they have a good sale on.

FaffTastic · 31/01/2012 21:21

It doesn't look very 'weddingy' to me and if a guest were to wear it I would expect them to be older than 38 (someone more like your mums age tbh!). I think you could get a lot nicer if you were to take a mooch round the big dept stores like HoF etc or online boutiques.

Tillyscoutsmum · 31/01/2012 21:53

Op - the merino one is ok. Just a bit ..meh and a slightly weird mix between frumpy/dull and trampy (thinking more of the flashing clevage).

How about this

this

this

this ?

slapmeonthepatio · 01/02/2012 10:49

Some of those are lovely - but the ones I really like are just not in my size or, I suppose, in my price range.

I'm going to have to come to terms with the fact that I may, in fact, be a frump :(
