Evening all. I have fine'ish' oily'ish' hair that I have to wash daily.

I've prob tried 20 salon shampoos/conditioners and 20 hight st brands over the last 15 yrs and not found one that I've been happy with.

If I use one for oily hair, makes it more oily. Anything that promises volume also makes it lank. I also have static hair (prob to do with it being fine), anything 'cleansing' seems to just strip it.

Anyhoo, I am willing to spend if it really works but wud be happier with a high st brand.

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated, before I start washing it with beer (apparently makes it very glossy but the smell may be a bit unpleasant) :)

Do you shampoo your hair twice you should wet, lather rinse and repeat also when you condition you shouldn't put it anywhere near your scalp it's for ends of your hair only.
I know this will be hard at first but try washing your hair every other day, washing everyday strips the hair of natural oils that it needs, so you produce more to compensate which leads to greasy hair (using shampoo for greasy hair will strip it even more). It will take a few weeks for your hair to get use to it but on the second day use talk or dry shampoo.

Done all that! Never cond above the chin, wash in cool water (as hot can make it more greasy). Rinse thoroughly. Try to leave every other day and use batiste. Even on the 2nd day wash, by lunchtime, fringe looks greasy. I have had some shampoos that aren't as bad as others. Wondered if anybody can recommend a 'fab' shampoo that cleans with weighing down or stripping oils? I've heard Ausie are good? Thx

Ausie are good but quite moisturising even the deep cleansing one. Have you tried clynol deep cleansing shampoo that use to be good not used it for a few years tho x

georgesmummy11 · 29/01/2012 09:47

Also with regards to washing in cool water the shampoo works better in warm water x

Have you tried more natural and organic brands. My hair never felt truly clean until I started using Neals Yard shampoo and conditioner. Could be harsh chemicals causing the problems and the plastics they use coating your hair.

MistyMountainHop · 29/01/2012 09:58

yeah make sure you wash hair in quite warm water. also agree with using organic brands of shampoo.

you can do a final rinse in cool (not cold) water

also second not washing hair every day, and make sure you do the final rinse for at least 2 minutes to make sure there is no shampoo / conditioner residue left

and if all else fails, batiste dry shampoo once your hair is dry is your friend! it will soak up oil at the roots and give you some volume.

I would say there is no perfect solution, we just have to wistfully gaze at those lucky enough not to have this problem (but then they'll say that dry'n'frizzy ain't so great either). But, best thing I have found is Philip Kingsley, yellow bottle shampoo for greasy types. I buy a 1lt bottle which is ££ but lasts forever, you need a teeny tiny bit.

wildstrawberryplace · 29/01/2012 10:17

OP, I have similar hair to yours and wash it every morning with Aussie Mega Shampoo. I find that does the job and my hair doesn't "get used to it" as it did with the more expensive stuff I tried such as Aveda, Daniel Galvin Jnr Organic, Kerastase etc. (Although my hair has never been as shiny as when I started using Daniel Galvin Jr Hangover Hair organic lavender shampoo, but after a month or so the effect stopped.)

I only condition the ends and rinse as soon as it is on, also using the Aussie Mega Instant conditioner.

I have tried to wash every other day but I just don't feel fresh unless I've washed it, and it doesn't seem to do my hair any harm. My hairdresser says it is in good condition despite being highlighted regularly.

I do use the BBH to style it and I find that on the days when I don't blow dry it, it gets more lank by the evening.

monkeysmama · 29/01/2012 11:17

I have the same hair. I use T Gel for greasy hair once a week and Aveda Shampure every day. After I spray some Bumble & Bumble Thickening spray on my upside down damp hair and leave it to dry or blast with hair dryer. Best it's ever been.

FaithHopeAndKevin · 29/01/2012 11:45

Lush Big - I can last a whole day without resorting to Batiste if I use this.

1gglePiggle · 29/01/2012 22:44

I always use Pantene clarifying shampoo when I need a deep clean, it's really good and cheap.

Reenypip · 29/01/2012 22:54

I have the greasy hair problem too...and I also find if I find a shampoo that's ok-ish my hair gets use to it and becomes almost greasy instantly.
I'm currently using the tresemme. I can go 24 hours without using dry shampoo.

Reenypip · 29/01/2012 22:55

Looking at other peoples suggestions, I find t-gel and Pantene are terrible for my greasy hair, makes it worse. But that's my hair.

dottyaboutstripes · 29/01/2012 22:57

My hair is the same and I use the pink Elvive stuff. It works for me and is half price in Tesco & Boots right now I believe

I have similar hair and find that this Charles Worthington shampoo is good. It is often on offer, shampoo and condition two for £6 or similar. You could always buy the 'takeaways' bottle first for a few pounds to see if you liked it. There is a "Balancing Act" version but I didn't find that as good.

The only other tip I have is, if I brush my hair immediately before a shower, and don't muss it up too much while washing it, I can use less/no conditioner. Otherwise I find my hair is so tuggy (a side effect of being fine I think) that I can't get anything through it.

Other than that, Batiste is my best mate! I have got down to a day in-between washes, but often wear my hair tied back that day.

HackneyCabbage · 01/02/2012 21:51

also second charles worthington. And also using dry shampoo spray (i've been using the tresemme one) on in-between days. gives my fine limp hair good body and sorts out grease factor.
