If you're size 16 or over and look fabulous come and tell me how you do it?

I know such women exist becasue I see them and every time I do I want to grab their arm and drag them to the shops and get them to do the same for me.

I'm panicking because I'm going to a wedding in a fortnight (fortnight) and have tried on so many things but I look dreadful.

So what do you wear to look amazing at a size 16?

Work out what colours suit you, what shape you are and accent the good bits, hiding the bad. Colour consultation was the best money I've ever spent.

cyb · 28/01/2012 18:24

I think its about grooming as much as anything

And wearing clothes that fit you and dont squish you out in all the wrong places

And heels, and show off your slim bits, neck, cleavage, lower arms, legs to knee etc

And smile and feel confident that's the most attractive thing

ggirl · 28/01/2012 18:28

not saying I look fabulous but I know what suits me

think about proportions
slim bottoms and loose fit top
loose wide fit bottoms and slim fit top

too much baggy looks awful and makes me look bigger

avoid light coloured bottoms if you have big arse etc

heels are your friend, they take off lbs

also all one tone/colour helps to slim the shape

good hair and makeup

My measurements are 107, 115, 120 (don't put them in inches please, I understand inches) so I don't actually ahve much shape.

so do you want a dress?

FIFIBEBE · 28/01/2012 18:42

I always notice a fantastic haircut and colour first. That can leave a very good first impression. Ggirl has some great advice.

FIFIBEBE · 28/01/2012 18:45

Would add think about shapewear. Try loads on until you find a size/brand/combination which gives you a smooth outline and doesn't leave a squashed sausage effect.

battherat · 28/01/2012 18:49

Dresses rather than trousers. Good underwear, heels and nice jewellery. Block colours (darkish not light) and fairly structured clothing rather than "floaty". Also, don't skimp on buying good tights. Cheap ones will create rolls as they migrate south.

lilibet · 28/01/2012 18:50

I have shapewear, i have some of those very long knickers that start under your bra and finish mid thigh.

My hair isn't bad - or it won't be once it has a trim, make up can be fantastic - dd works for benefit and is very good at putting mine on. We also get loads of freebies Grin She used to work for Estee LAuder - that was better though.

I think it's no to a dress as I have tried so many on and they all look very bad

yy shapewear under a dress is my lifesaver

cece · 28/01/2012 18:50

Shapewear is essential (not that I am saying I am looking stunningly good).

I also like to choose cuts that enhance my better features and cover the worst bits.

Hence I wear scoop or v neck to show off cleavage. I wear sleeves to cover my arms. I have short fat legs (with cankles) so tend to stick to trousers or knee length skirts with long boots.

Be honest about what needs to be covered and shown with pride.

Agree also confidence and colours to suit as well.

cece · 28/01/2012 18:53

I think the Phase Eight spotty dress is perfect (or it would be for me) Smile

lilibet · 28/01/2012 19:02

I did look at a lovely navy spotty dress today but dd has a navy dress and I can't wear black for various reasons. My arms look like sides of ham.

Where colours are concerned I'm a ginger!!

I have spent all day at Cheshire Oaks and didn't even get my jeans off to try anything on.

That Simply Be one that ggirl suggested (under the glam up link) looks really nice - quite expensive but would be perfect for work...

Just thinking out loud really!!

chocolateandcoffee · 28/01/2012 20:41

what about something like this since you dont want a dress

SantieMaggie · 28/01/2012 22:08

is black ok for a wedding then?

watching this with.interest as i have a wedding in march and dont want to spend too muxh!

lilibet · 29/01/2012 18:47

I think black is normally fine for a wedding, you can go mad with coloured accessories.

It's not suitable in this case because the bride has terminal cancer and the wedding has had to be brought forward from April Sad and I don't wnat to look as if the outfit that I have bought could do double duty IYKWIM

So, I have bought things - I'm not totally happy with them but at least I have something.

I have got a cream jacket which is very flatteringly cut, a bit nipped in at the waist and has nice buttons, and a pair of black trousers, which are quite wide and a lovely soft material. My plan at the moment is to wear a black vest under the jacket and then have a nice bright top in the car and nip into the loo and change. My reservations are that I may look a bit officey, but honestly as DH points out under present circumstances, it's more important theat we are all there.

I do like the jeresey top - good colour!

Sorry to hear that Lilibet :(

I only ask because I have a black dress I could wear to the wedding I have in March.

Sounds lovely what you have - you can always get some lovely accessories to brighten it up if you need to.

SantieMaggie · 29/01/2012 20:16

But where did you get your stuff in the end?

startail · 29/01/2012 20:25

Shape wear, heels.
Oh dear I can't stand the idea of either, I'll stick to being a style free 16.

Seriously shape wear costs a fortune, looks ridiculously hot and is about as sexy as a bin bag.

If I'm getting ready to go out I'm generally being pestered by DH and 10 and 14y DDs.
They'd piss themselves laughing at most of the shape wear I've seen.

(it's clearly only for people who can get dressed and undressed in the lockable ensuite we don't have)

Loveleopardprint · 29/01/2012 20:42

Good shoes and handbag, good haircut and some slap! I am a size 18 and try to look good. I like to wear layers in lovely colours which don't cling but skim. I also like scarves and costume jewellery.
I think shape wear is often suggested by people who don't actually need it and cannot understand how damn uncomfortable it is!!!Grin
