For those of you with long locks...how often do you go for a trim?....

I have one aim this year and that is to grow may hair long again. Its about shoulder length now, use to be past my shoulders but i had so many trims last year because my hair was so knackered due to all the colouring, i had to have quite a bit cut off. My last trim was the beginning of Dec. I've recently used colour B4 (hair colour remover) to start afresh, i like the colour now and i am determined not to colour it as often, if not at all.

I don't use my straighteners everyday, maybe a couple of times a week. I use to have very think hair, but i had layers cut into it and coupled with medication, it has become very thin. Every so often there comes a time where i look at my hair and it looks so dry at the ends that i just think it needs a good trim, about 3 inches so i'm back to square one.I was thinking just going to the hairdressers every 3 or 4 months and getting just the very ends off?

Are there any tips to letting my hair grow longer?

Find a really good hairdresser who isn't scissor happy!!

I'm in the same position..had mine cut into a short inverted bob early last year and am now growing it again. Mine is thick and wavy and I straighten it otherwise it is hideous..but I want it long one more time before I look like a witch before I'm too old.

I have also ceased colouring it, and while I have been shocked to find a silver streak at my parting I actually quite like it and am going to hang out until the summer and then head for some subtle highlights.

Once I decided to grow it I told my hairdresser and he has been fab. I go once every 3 months and he takes the ends off..literally the very ends and no more and he is shaping it as it grows (I can now just pull it back into a pont tail if I need to)

My previous hairdresser used to take an inch off at every trim and I never got anywhere!

I also use dry shampoo between hair washes and it stops me from washing it every day and thereby over straightening it!

I am determined Grin

I have long thick hair. I go about 3 times a yr. I dont dye it and i use a good quality shampoo and conditioner. Let it dry for an hour before using a hair dryer and very rarely straighten Wink

I have hair down to the back strap of my bra, I have to keep it this length as it's really curly and needs the weight to keep it under control. BUT getting a hairdresser to grasp that is a nightmare, they always hack away and take it too short. So basically I've finally come to terms with the fact that I have to stop frying it with straighteners and leave it curly. It's really improved the condition and now I can get away with a cut twice a year or so. Hopefully they will also take less off it! I've tried to explain to them I'd prefer a few split ends to the unruliness when it's too short but they just don't bloody listen!

My hair was (I had it chopped off this week) about elbow length, and I've had it cut about once a year for the past few years. However, my hair is pretty thick, poker straight and doesn't really get split ends, so there was no particular need for a trim!

I'm always complimented on the condition of my hair by hairdressers, and my tried and tested formula is:

  • Never brush it (literally didn't own a brush until I got my hair cut this week!) - because it was so sleek and straight it never tangled.
  • Hardly ever blow dry it - I used bumble and bumble surf spray to give it a bit of texture after washing, quick blow dry maybe once a week.
  • Basically ignore it.

My hair is long (about an inch or two past bra strap)... I get it cut about 4 times a year. It grows ridiculously fast.

How did you get away without brushing long hair... gosh... Mine gets knotted if I so much as go outside on a breeze.

The condition of mine isn't bad actually. I wash everyday to every other day (if I'm being lazy). I use a leave in conditioner the Aussie Long Hair one. I plait it for bed which helps reduce knot and keeps it out of my face.

It just depends on your hair though doesn't it, I don't brush mine either. Even though it's curly, washing it is enough to get any tangles out and it's just so much better left to it's own devices. I think it's just a choice between length or experimenting with colours etc-condition really is the key.

now mine's in good condition i tend to go only when it's really lost its shape - maybe 3 times a year and only have what's absolutely needed off.

i'm trying to grow my hair longer again after a few years of pg & bf when it doesn't seem to have grown.

you need to improve the condition so you can get less regular chops.

ask tatty devine for dying tips - you need to dye the whole length as infrequently as possible.

wash it less too - i used to wash mine daily but now i'm a recent convert to dry shampooing in between washes and my hair's really improved as a result.
