Can you have braces if you have crowns? I HATE my teeth

I hate my teeth so recenly investigated braces (invisalign or clearstep) I couldn;t have either without having fixed track braces first and an extraction. I decided to go for crowns - heavy duty I know but I so wanted them straight and the centre line sorted. I had them done but I hate them as much as the original teeth. They make me even more self conscious than before. I wish to God I had done braeces now but am wondering if it is too late. does anyone know?

It is never too late. I had mine in late 30's and would strongly recommend. It take some time and patience ( it's not cheap either)

NuggetsForTeaAgain · 20/01/2012 19:09

but I have had crowns now, can you have braces with crowns?
I don;t care about the short term appearance just the feasibility? I feel such a div asking my dentist now that I have paid £2k for crowns

the braces would have to go over the crowns - i wonder if tehy can do that?

Go and ask for a referral to an orthodontist. They might be able to do it.

I only have one crown so I don't know what happens with more. I get a metal ring put round the crown sort of pushed into the gum along with my braces. I did have elastic before but they need something more heavy duty to move it.

thanks - i feel such a twit Blush

These days dentists have solution for anything. When they give you the price make a sad look and ask for discount on sympathy basis.

MadameCastafiore · 20/01/2012 20:05

I have 3 porcelain crowns and wear invisalign braces.

NuggetsForTeaAgain · 20/01/2012 20:32

MC - i wanted invisaligh in the first pla e but they said I would have to have tracks and extration and then finish wiht invisalign. I was so desperate to have good teeth that I jsut went the short route and had them crowned. I so wish I hadn;t. Their not obviously bad to other people but I feel like everyone can see theh are not my real teeth and that they look stupid. maybe I have oral dysmporphia!

Nuggets - I felt like that. I hated my teeth so much yet everyone else said they were not so back. I could not get invisalign as I needed metal to help move my jaw back. Now I am nearly at the two year mark and dread getting close to having my braces out. I am so used to them. I rest my lips on them. What will I do without them? I who was so self conscious about my teeth like train tracks! I actually met a girl I went to school with and I saw her staring at them but I did'nt care. I love my braces even when tightened and my teeth are all sensitive Grin

If you are not happy with the crowns then I would suggest going back to the dentist who did them and get them the way you want ? surely if you've paid that much you should be able to complain?

NuggetsForTeaAgain · 20/01/2012 23:51

i have been back but he counters my negatives wtih a postive and now I am confused Hmm Sad

Sanesometimes1 · 21/01/2012 00:53

Just go back again, tell him what you don't like, take someone with you for moral support as well ?, if he still refuses to help/try and sort something then ask about the practice complaints procedure ?

Have a look at this site

A good dentist won't take out your teeth IMHO. I had my crowns replaced before I had my braces as old ones were hideous. Go to another dentist and get a second opinion. Mine is in north Essex if you are anywhere round there.

Grumpystiltskin · 21/01/2012 15:25

You can have braces and crowns, I'm just a general dentist but I am certain there are some orthodontic problems that are best addressed by removal of one or more teeth. I took a tooth out for one of these yesterday but there is an ortho on here who's name I can't remember who may be along soon.

Not all problems can be fixed with invisalign, of that I am certain.

vanfurgston · 21/01/2012 16:53

my sympathies r with u op. i drove my orthodontist up the wall bcz i was never satisfied with the treatment

having said that, if the patient decides that they dnt have time for ortho and go dwn the shorter route after having been explained the treatment options and then want a different one, should the dentist be responsible?

NuggetsForTeaAgain · 21/01/2012 18:08

thank you all - I am not blaming the dentist. It was my decision in the end though my preferred choice initially was to have braces (invisalign/clear step) and to work with my own teeth., but this was not possible without first having one XLA to make room, then tracks for approx 18 months followed by invisalign which would have made the treatment time approx 2 years . Tbh, the time factor didn't bother me in teh slightest given taht I have lived for several years with misaligned and wonky teeth but it was going to cost me in the region of £5k which I simply could not afford. The crowns I've since had are purely cosmetic to address my centre line , which is still off by about 1.5 mm and a tooth which is set back from the others (UR2). Also, my teeth leaned to the right because of the gap caused by my inset UR2. They do look straight now and probably would not be noticed by anyone else. But I am not happy. Maybe I have dental dysmorphia (is there sucha thing?!) as my family and family had not even really noticed them being wonky in teh first place. I do have a thing about them though esp nowadays with all tehse teenagers having perfect straight teeth after a year or so o wearing braces. I have alreayd been to the dentist to tell hm I am not happy but it just feelslike I am making a big odl fuss over nothing (not to me it doesn't-

i feel more self conscious now when I thought that having taken the plunge and got the finances in order to sort my smile out, I would feel happy Sad

OP posts:
vanfurgston · 21/01/2012 19:23

:( thats sad op. dental dymorphia is real and u shd discus it with ur dentist. have u seen any1 else apart from this dentist, a second opinion may help

NuggetsForTeaAgain · 21/01/2012 20:44

everyone else seems to think I look ok but i think they are lying to save my feelings. Is that weird? I know I don;t look ugly, I know my teeth are basically straight. But then I also know that they are not what I want them to look like and i feel shallow. Oh fuck!

OP posts:
NuggetsForTeaAgain · 21/01/2012 20:47

i am constantly looking at peoples' teeth. Always. I feel like if they have perfect teeth I am a bit inadequate toothwise by comparison. I know I am sounding a bit weird but it's true. I actually envy people with perfect teeth, even dd's friends once they have their braces off! not to any great degree but quietly green Blush

Dear NUggets,
did you ever get your teeth sorted?
As an Invisalign expert I can advise that you can have Invisalign over your crowns. maybe they do not need changing?
