has anyone had glycolic peel?

that's it really. I've booked an appointment to have a glycolic peel on Saturday and I am wondering what to expect.
I'm 32 and my skin is not great - some adult acne, big pores, fine lines, sensitive skin.
Will it make me look 10 years younger........? (a very hopeful emoticon)

ooh i'm having my first peel (course of 6 ) done this afternoon. Will let you all know how I get on.

fridakahlo · 26/01/2012 00:08

How did it go?

KellyKettle · 26/01/2012 17:23

Oh duende! Hows your skin?

I have quite fair skin with freckles but 30% was fine for me. However, I had been using daily 10% GA cleansing gel, 10% moisturiser & a night lotion which was stronger still. I bought these from a sk:n clinic for £££ and was supposed to go back for a course of peels but the cleanser/moisturiser was great so I didn't bother.

I then did some googling, found Bravura and a lot of furumswhere people talked about doing their own and decided to give it a try.

How did you get on makealist?

janmoomoo · 27/01/2012 12:47

Loads of good stuff on that Bravura website, and good reviews. But not much info on what is best for what or how to use it. Would you start with the 30% glycolic and do you need a packet of neutraliser for every time you use it? Any clues?

KellyKettle · 27/01/2012 20:59

Yes I think you start with 30% and definitely use neutraliser every time. I think it might more about how long it's on rather than the %.

fridakahlo · 04/02/2012 01:49

I had my peel done last saturday, was the mid-range peel (whatever that means), the first of a course of four.
The thing is I didn't really get any peeling, more just some flaking so I'm thinking when I go back for my next one should I go for the 'strongest' one instead?

KellyKettle · 04/02/2012 14:28

I never get actual peeling fridakahlo, I don't think you're supposed to.

How does your skin look?

fridakahlo · 04/02/2012 14:37

Maybe ever so slightly better. I'm having them for acne mainly, the spots have dried out but I'm still getting new ones, she did warn me that after the first my skin might get worse for a while.
Here"s hoping the next three have more of an effect.

SixtyFootDoll · 04/02/2012 14:37

I do saliclylic peels at home, I buy the acid off eBay, salicylic is better on my spot prone skin.

fridakahlo · 04/02/2012 14:40

I've used loads of different traetments containing sacylic acid, don't find they have much of an effect. What percentage do you use?

SixtyFootDoll · 04/02/2012 15:26

20%

makealist · 06/02/2012 15:32

Sorry It's took so long for the update. I've had 3 done now and I can really notice the difference, my skin looks much clearer/fresher.
Don't know what percentage she uses, I will ask on my next visit, but each time it's left on for a bit longer, it prickles like mad when it's first applied and my face feels tight for the rest of the day but I just use lots of moisteriser through out the day to combat this.
I think it's made my sun spots show up more, but that could just be because the rest of my skin is clearer there is more of a contrast now, will also ask about this on my next visit.

makealist · 06/02/2012 15:33

Also no peeling, just a little flushed, blotchy afterwards, but thats gone by the next day.

CakeandRoses · 07/02/2012 00:08

looking forward to an update again. thanks makealist!

makealist · 09/02/2012 14:31

I asked my beautician what strength the peel was and its 60 something %! You cannot buy it if you haven't been trained to use it.

LtheWife · 09/02/2012 15:19

Salicylic acid (a BHA rather than an AHA like cyclic acid) is better for acne prone skin for two reasons. Firstly, salicylic acid is a much more effective anti inflammatory, and with acne being an inflammatory condition that's quite a bonus. Secondly, salicylic acid is lipid soluble so can better penetrate sebum etc to effectively clear out the pores, whereas glycolic acid is water soluble so less effective in that respect.

I've tried glycolic peels in the past and they did sod all for my oily, acne prone skin. I didn't even get a hint of tingling, pinkness or dryness/flaky skin afterwards, even when left or a full 10 minutes treatment time. But I tried my first 20% salicylic peel on Saturday (1 minute for first treatment), had plenty of tingling on application, 3 days later started to get dry flaky skin and haven't had a single new spot since (a huge improvement!). I haven't seen any other improvements as yet, but I'm hopeful that I'll see more benefits with each weekly treatment. Normal products that contain salicylic acid did nothing for me, so I didn't hold out much hope for using it as a peel but was willing to try it out of desperation. It does seem to be doing something so I'll keep my fingers crossed for now.

LtheWife · 09/02/2012 15:20

That should say rather than an AHA like glycolic acid.

KellyKettle · 09/02/2012 15:58

60%! Shock

jbg · 09/02/2012 16:08

I bought a glycolic peel kit from Bravura London a few years ago as i had quite prominent brown marks on my face from years of sunbathing etc. It entailed a weekly peel over 6wks and the results were great. My brown patches completly disappeared and have not returned. I live in Madrid so I use a moisturiser with spf25 and from March will use one of spf30.

I now use Paula's Choice products which contain a daily use 5% glycolic acid and a weekly 10% along with their Retinol serum and moisturiser at night. I'm 45 and my skin is fine.
