Help! Smart London wedding to attend and I really don't want to look mumsy.

Hi,

We've been invited to a close friend's wedding. It's a civil ceremony with a reception at The Savoy (eek!). Should be pretty informal (on a Saturday afternoon) but I'm guessing there'll be some pretty stylish outfits going on!

DS is 5 months old and I feel decidedly mumsy at the moment, which is the last thing I want to look. I'd much rather look chic, maybe with a bit of an 'edge'. None of my old clothes are wearable as I've edged up to size 12, so I'll have to start from scratch. I'm 5'4''and petite, with a big, flabby mummy tummy.

I normally go for LK Bennett and Hobbs, but any ideas, either for styles or particular outfits would be really appreciated (no strict budget, although maybe not Valentino!).

Thanks :)

Spanx and killer heels will work wonders.

this is beautiful and a bargain, only a few left

What's your colouring?

AphraBehn · 19/01/2012 19:39

Some gorgeous Anglomania dresses on that site Envy

trailingvine · 19/01/2012 19:40

Thanks Hetty- I had thought of trying Anglomania (I feel cool just typing it!) and that dress is gorgeous. I'm going to be thinking about it all evening.
I've got brown shoulder length hair with darkish skin and pale blue eyes. Think I suit most (bold) colours and probably wear 'colour' better than neutrals (don't really do pastels).

The other thing I considered was a DVF wrap- is that a bit 'mum on a mini break' though?

With that colouring I think that Anglomania dress would look great. Also with a special dress like that you can wear black heels you already have or get some cheapie ones in Zara. It is probably unfair but as soon as I read "wrap dress" I think mumsy.

AphraBehn · 19/01/2012 19:59

Step away from the wrap dress.

Point taken :)

Ooh, I don't know... i was going to suggest this DVF dress...

AphraBehn · 19/01/2012 20:45

That's a lovely dress as well tethers.

I always think the problem with wrap dresses is they are so ubiqitous that there isn't much distinction between them regardless of where they are from. That's great if you are buying from Wallis and want to pass it off as DVG but not so good the other way round!
Those Anglomania dresses have a distinct look of their own.
I'm just jealous that I can't wear one.

I recently splashed out on a Viv Westwood Box dress in khaki. Incredibly easy to wear, stylishly understated and I've been astounded by how many people have come up to me and commented about it.
here it is in black

There is now only one of those fab VW dresses left in a 12 - please buy it!

oohermrs · 20/01/2012 14:59

Damsel in a Dress - got a really nice dress for a posh Christmas wedding from there. Definitely buy Spanx if you feel you need a lift!

Matsikula · 20/01/2012 16:38

Just wanted to join the enabling chorus saying 'get that Vivienne Westwood one Hettycat linked to'. It's gorgeous.

Like the DVF one too (it's not what most people mean by a wrap dress) but it would maybe a bit more difficult to make work for both day and night.
