What can I do to make my long hair look less like a birds nest?

Hi, I have long dark hair in long layers. When I come out of the hairdressers it lit looks lovely, but then it goes back to normal.
It's thin hair but theres lots of it, giving the apperance of thick hair.
I was and condition it, then blow dry it. Sometimes I use the Aussie, take the heat spray but it makes no difference. It's just really fluffy and flyaway. There's no defenition to it. If I use streighteners, it looks better, but I'm not keen of polka streight hair.
I'd like it to look smooth and sleek, with some curl to it. Should I use rollers for this, if so what kind? Are there any products that could make it look less fluffy, without making it grasy?

I'd be really greatful for any advice. Smile

you need morroccan oil or something similar

sedgieloo · 19/01/2012 19:05

My hair sounds like yours, I use the aussie products this works for me, also I use a parlux hairdryer (really worth it if you have loads of hair) with a giant paddle brush sort of section it to dry it and make sure I blow dry it until it is bone dry

condition, condition condition

obviously do the conditioner every single time you wash your hair. also, do an intensive treatment once a week. some people like masks, but i prefer hair oil massaged into my scalp, left on for at least twenty minutes, sometimes overnight, sometimes for a few hours, then washed out, ( you have to shampoo twice usually to get it all out) then conditioned with usual conditioner.
cut, regularly to get rid of split ends
as little heat treatment as you can stand. so less blowdrying and straightening.

Oops, clicked on link before I noticed the word "less".

Sorry, can't help with what you need.

Had loads of tips before :o

I have been using kerastase hair oil, it was a gift and has made my hair much more sleek and less puffy/frizzy. It is expensive though so I bought myself some L' oreal Mythic Oil which is a third of the price and I think just as good. So either depending on your budget should help.

Thanks everyone. I'll try the morroccan oil. I do condition it every time, but don't use any masks or oils.

My daughter has the most gorgeous thick dark auburn hair that just falls into a perfect sleek yet bouncy bob every time I blast it with the hairdryer.
She'll be so greatful she hasn't inherited my hair.

Do you blowdry your hair straight with a round headed brush or a paddle brush? If you take the time over the blow dry that can really make a difference. The hair follicles lay flat and make the hair look sleeker.

I then finish off with this which gives extra shine (I don't put it near my roots though) and stops the fly away hairs.

OhThisIsJustGrape · 19/01/2012 19:35

Have you tried a Babyliss Big Hair? My hair is exactly as you describe yours, the BBH makes it lovely and smooth. The ends curl a little too.

Lots of threads on here about it, also plenty of 'how to' clips on you tube.

Only think I don't do is use it right the way up to my roots as my hair goes too 'big', just use on mid-lengths down.

mummyloveslucy · 19/01/2012 19:56

I use a paddle brush, but try to pull it streight with that. I tried using the other kind but I'm so kack handed I couldn't do it very well.
I wonder if hairdressers give lessons on how to style your own hair?

I'll definatly try the BBH and see if that helps. Smile

I have the same problem with fluffiness - lots of very fine hair - and find that serum just on the ends helps or just some mousse to add a little weight to the ends. Despite several attempts with different brands, moroccan oil makes me break out so I don't use that.

The Frizz Ease hair mask's are quite good, and its 2 for £7.50 at boots on all Frizz Ease!

Have you tried Curling your hair with straighteners? You say you don't like it dead straight, my hairdresser does it for me in around 10 mins, if you can learn how to do it, always looks lovely once she's done it. If your hairdressers a good 'en she'll show you how to do things, I've been shown a million times the GHD curls, watched vid's but i cannot bloody do it.

Bigger name salons do lessons, they are a bit pricey though from what i remember.

SixtyFootDoll · 19/01/2012 22:29

I use a big barrel brush to pull it out and around. Similar to a BHH
