What on earth is getting your colours done? I've seen the thread titles and thought it was summat to do with hair but apparently not. Is it paying somebody to tell you what colour clothes to wear? Do you not already know what suits you? I know I look crap in bright colours and good in dark greens, browns etc. No pastels, v little black. I know this from looking in a mirror. Am I missing something? Or do people who 'do colours' have a magic gaze?

I still wear bright colours btw. In patchwork and tie dye usually as I don't care that I look a fright. But I know I shouldn't dress like this.

gladyoucame I was terrified of looking like a CBEEBIES presenter in my brights. Especially as I have a friend who is a spring who wears brights top to toe (and looks good in it I must say), I thought we all had to do the same . Panic! But Ive found a combination of one my dark neutrals (Navy or choc) with a lighter neutral (cream or light grey) with some bright added (via a scarf, cami, or jewellery) is the formula that works for me. I also like stripes and prints so look out for tops which have some bright in the detail. You will find the balance that works for you, just takes a bit of time/experimenting

I dont wear my HoC lippy at all tbh, I have very heavily pigmented lips and everything looks super bright on me. My coral lippy from HoC is visible from the moon I reckon : / Ive had better luck buying from other brands. But a bright , warm lippy is transformative on a Spring.

ENormaSnob · 20/01/2012 09:47

I am a very dark brunette but having highlights next month.

Will this affect the outcome?

Just wondering in case I change hair colour in the future.

Gillybobs · 20/01/2012 09:52

They cover your hair if its been coloured at all. They will just look at your skin tone/eyes. If you are thinking of having colours done Id do it before you spend money on highlights. Then you know if you need a warm or cool tone colour in your hair.

TracyK · 20/01/2012 10:41

I jut had my hair highlighted on Wed - I knew I should've waited till after my colours - but hairdresser had been off ill and my roots were 10 weeks old!
Being an autumn - I should have had more golden highlights- whereas mine are a bit too ashey. But hey ho - will know the next time.
I've ordered some chocolate leggings and jeans from Mint Velvet sale. I have quite a lot of chocolatey tops.
Need some scarves - thanks Gilly - will look at the ebay ones for a mass, cheap order!
What do you think of www.isabellaoliver.com/womens-clothing/uk/600/365-sale/tops/TP498.html in khaki?
I think I'll mix up my lippy with some clear gloss - I don't really like the lipstick look on my lips (too ageing).
Are there any blogs out there for springs/autumns??
Theres got to be a gap in the market for another type of Kettlewell company - but with nicer clothes?
I'm going to have a mosey around our local asian material shops and see if they do shit loads of diff coloured silks.

What if you always have tan on your face? Shock

Should I go without even though I always have it on? Confused

I have been inspired to go!

Gillybobs · 20/01/2012 10:56

You should let any fake tan wear off before you go. They ask you to turn up without make up on but I just couldnt (!) so I just wiped it off for the draping part. When do you go?

TracyK · 20/01/2012 10:58

She said it wouldn't make a difference if you were tanned or not.
So I'd just keep it on.
Certain colours will just make you look 'well'. I could see it quite clearly after a while. Some colours - you could see the shadows under my eyes and blotches here and there - but with the right colours - my face looked smooth with no bags and blotches.
Some colours I don't think I would ever wear - and some I know I will love eg the dark olives, khakis and chocolates.

Tracy Ive sent you a PM

A natural tan is fine but fake tan should be allowed to wear off.

TracyK · 20/01/2012 11:25

Sent you one back GB!

I had mine done years ago with Colour Me beautiful. I was a spring flowing into summer. Just curious what a paintbox spring is.

Gillybobs · 20/01/2012 11:34

Paintbox (sometimes known as Bright Spring) is spring flowing into winter, can take more of the darker spring colours as tend to have stronger colouring. Im PB Spring and some folk were convinced I was a Winter as Im dark haired, pale skinned and bright blue eyes. But my hair is warm dark brown so overall effect is PB Spring. (Im not an expert, this is just what Ive gleaned from all my googling since being draped Grin )

TracyK · 20/01/2012 11:35

Imaine a paintbox... full of bright colours! tbh - I can't see my mum going full flow into it- bit like me - will pick the least 'bright' of the bright iykwim.

alemci · 20/01/2012 11:42

yes that makes sense, so any idea what the Spring Summer one would be in yours.

I do like the Spring colours. I am fair skinned, blue eyed with light brown hair (well greying) but years' ago is was LOL.

I think the colours thing is great and I may start looking at Kettlewell. My mum likes their tops as they are good quality.

Gillybobs · 20/01/2012 11:45

Probably a Light Spring Alemci

I like this website, it not House of Colour but has some good examples here

ENormaSnob · 20/01/2012 12:03

My friend went a few years ago and is going to dig the number out for me.

It is house of colour that I will be going to.

She is an autumn and looks great in her colours. She changes her hair a lot too and the colours still look good.

I am naturally v dark haired, deep green eyes and fair/lightly tanned skin. I always have a bit of fake tan on though. Always.

TracyK · 20/01/2012 12:04

What colour of hair does your friend have Norma?

OP posts:
Gillybobs · 20/01/2012 12:07

Enormasnob Your colouring sounds gorgeous, Im intrigued to find out what you are!

FWIW I used to always wear fake tan, felt I looked awful without it. Now Im wearing the right colours and getting my hair coloured the right shade I actually let it wear off without realising it. Weird

ENormaSnob · 20/01/2012 12:38

Thanks gilly Blush

Had a look at the website you linked to and think I may end up either a cool or bright winter.

Tracy, think she has naturally light brown hair, blue eyes and skin that tans easily. Her hair atm is highlighted blonde. Have also seen her with red and a lighter blonde which looked good.

I'm a bright spring, bought a red lipstick from HoC consultant but rarely wear it except in the eve, I recommend any other bright springs that want a colour that's not scream-out-loud bright try MAC Crosswires, it's a brightish coral but looks kind of natural on me. Also MAC Fleur Power a good blusher for Springs.

Gillybobs · 20/01/2012 15:19

jumping yy to Mac lippy, loads of great spring colours. Also Carnation by Bobbi Brown is a lovely warm and bright "neutral" IYSWIM. Great for daytime.

I do worry about the Barbara Cartland effect with bright lippy....
