please can anyone give me some advice on the health of my hair?

For the last few years I've had highlights with all over tint put on top, not too often but probably often enough. In the last 6-12 months my hair has started to either fall out or break off. I decided a few months ago to give it a break from colouring, I now shampoo it much more gently and use proper salon recommended products. i don't wash it as often and blow dry it much more carefully to stop burning the hair.
The colour growth is getting me down though now especially as i'm getting more and more grey hair with every day (or so it seems).

Two different hairdressers have recommended two different options and I'm confused. One says to just put highlights on the growth at the top and the other says to forego the highlights and instead just do an all over tint that will cover the growth enough and also nourish the hair.

Can anyone please advise? FYI, I'm mid-late 40s with thin shoulder length hair. I wash it every other day, rough dry it mainly now and just do a full blow dry if I'm going out out, I use dry shampoo on the second and/or third day, if I tie it up for exercise I now do it very gently. I very occasionally use curling tongs.

Many TIA

Firstly you do not need to be walking about with grey on show or roots Wink

The advice sounds right to me what they are saying with the highlights is have the colour painted only on the new hair/roots and not run it through as when running the colour through that piece of hair will end up getting coloured and coloured each time and can cause damage.

What colour are you naturally and what colour would you like to be? Smile

Ive just looked in he mirror and it's perhaps not quite as bad a picture as I painted. The roots don't jump up and grab you like I was imagining they did Smile. My natural hair is a fairly boring mid brown and my current 'coloured' colour is just a slightly lighter more golden brown.

Grin sorry Blush

Are you hell bent on being lighter? If you had a colour without the lightening agents it would be nowhere near as harsh on your hair. Also the highlighting and full colour is a faff and expensive. How about asking for a nice full head colour in a lovely, rich, shiny mahogany or chocolate brown?

I don't mind not being lighter PP, I just feel a bit uncomfortable with what i have (roots and grey)
A warm rich brown though I have had before and i think it aged me, although that could have been the cut that i had at the time.

Kérastase Resistance Forcintense

Take a look at this, think it will help Smile

thanks cremeeggsrock - I have that from a recommendation on here previously (it might have been from you Smile) I had a treatment in the salon on friday so i'm holding of using the Kerastase again for a few weeks. I've been warned that over treating can be nearly as bad as not treating as all.

If you trust your hairdresser let them pick the colour. Sometimes with a hair colour change a slight change in make up is needed. Smile
