emperor's new designer clothes

My DC were given some designer clothes for Christmas by a generous relative. I know they were genuine because we went in a chose them together at a Bond Street shop. And they are rubbish. The trousers aren't finished properly (seams and threads loose everywhere, turn-ups with such mean seam allowance they are already starting to fray. They look like they'll fall apart within three or four wears. One of the shirts looks like it has sun damage. They weren't in the sale.

Is this a real shock, or is it a big con that you get what you pay for?

Not sure I can say the name of the shop but it rhymes with Alf Warren, almost.

I'm hacked off. We got better service and far far better quality in Gap.

We have a few alf warran outfits for dd (gifts) and they are so unremarkable that it confuses me.

With the exception of one swimsuit (which is gorgeous and a bit 'out there' so I can understand the higher pricetag) it's all quite bland and you're right in saying it isn't any better quality than gap.

There's quite a few other 'designer' offenders though.

Unfortunately lots of designer clothes are just as shoddily made as cheaper ones. The fabrics are not necessarily any better either. Polyester has already taken over the high street and now some designer brands are charging a fortune for polyester clothes. I think you have to evaluate items individually to see if they are worth the money. Some people seem to think that if you stick a 'brand' on it, people will pay anything.

Glad it's not just me.

We have had far better quality stuff from Primark. The button holes are fraying, the hems are coming loose, the waistbands aren't lined. This is el cheapo stuff at sickening prices.

It makes me really admire shops like Gap, which I never much liked before, because at least everything he ever bought them from there has lasted forever, and looks as good as new even when it's been fifty times round a rugby field. I;d be scared to let them wear the Alf Warren chinos to anywhere more rough and tumble than lunch at my great auntie's house!
