how do I clean make up brushes properly?

Fabulous friend gave me a lovely set of make up brushes for Christmas.

I want to keep them lovely and not at all like the bacteria-ridden, gunked up old ones lamguishing in my manky make up bag so what do I clean them with? And how do I dry them properly?

TIA

I have e.l.f brush cleaner which you just spray on and then wipe off with kitchen roll and leave the brushes to air dry. Works really well on mine :)

I use a tiny bit of baby shampoo and let them air dry, but this might be frowned upon. My brushes are yet to fall apart/get skanky though.

shampoo twice and air dry flat, it is hair after all (I assume they are not synthetic?)

Zembo · 14/01/2012 12:03

I use the baby shampoo and air dry method too.

I've got a set of mac brushes that look like new and they are 10 years old. I clean them weekly with baby shampoo (two or three lathers until the water rinses out clean) and then leave them flat on tissue papper to dry. No need for a special cleaner I think.

I haven't found anything as effective as MAC brush cleaner fluid. The amount of foundation that comes out of my foundation brush when I use that stuff is amazing. Anti-bacterial too, I believe. I use baby shampoo in a pinch though.

I just use anti-bac liquid soap. I remain unconvinced that I need an expensive brush cleaner to add to the clutter in my bathroom. I wash and rinse until clear and then air dry on a piece of kitchen towel on a radiator.

fairy liquid

theseventhdwarf · 14/01/2012 12:38

Estée Lauder make up brush cleaner. It's great!

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 14/01/2012 13:26

I wash mine with shampoo and let air dry.

mummy2maisie · 14/01/2012 13:40

I use shampoo and then put in the airing cupboard.

CointreauVersial · 14/01/2012 13:43

Same here, shampoo or soap.

HandMini · 14/01/2012 13:51

Baby shampoo or liquid soap.

My answer as an ex make up artist would be isopropyl alcohol. After every use dip brush in IPA then wipe on tissue until clean. Takes seconds, dries almost instantly and very hygienic.

Otherwise, gentle shampoo and lay flat to dry.

PoodleShyt · 14/01/2012 19:41

Baby shampoo, a tiny bit, luke warm water and leave to dry. I like seeing all the brown dirt come off and make its decent down the sink.

Catonkey · 15/01/2012 13:00

Thanks for your answers everyone, tried baby shampoo on a couple and they've come out beautifully. May invest in some of the more professional stuff soon but for the time being, baby shampoo is great!

when i asked this a mn'er who is a make up artist linked me to this www.dauphines.co.uk/p-kryolan-brush-cleaner-100ml.htm and it really is a revelation.

brushes also dry in super super quick time - i mean like minutes rather than hours.

its fab. im buying the big bottle next time.

Catonkey · 15/01/2012 20:33
