Had colours done but now I'm having a crisis

I had my colours done this week and was told I was a autumn. Now, I'm going through my wardrobe to get rid of some stuff and thought I would do a test to see if I am an autumn. BUT every colour looks the same and I can't work out what I meant to be looking for. I can't say one colour looks better on me than the others.

I'm sat with no make up on in the mirror trying to replicate what she did!

Can anyone whose had it done guide me in the right direction. How do I know that the consultant got my colours right?

Could you see how different you looked when she draped you on your autumn colours compared to the others? I think it's sometimes hard to translate it to our existing clothes because we are just used to what we look like in them.

ZZMum · 13/01/2012 12:02

I think the reason we pay for this is that we can not do it for ourselves - I had mine done recently and most of the time could see no difference with the drapes - however, I did take her advice and changed my usual browns and oranges for black and white and purple etc - and the number of people who have said I look taller slimmer healthier is quite amazing .. personally think I look as rough as ever!

snail1973 · 13/01/2012 14:08

I agree. Had my colours done, agreed with some of what she was saying on the day but couldn't see much difference with other colours. But having 'made the swtich' I get loads more complements than ever before and am starting to be able to spot the right and wrong colours more easily myself. It definately takes a while to get used to it

ForwardOcho · 13/01/2012 14:16

Oh God. I just booked to have mine done - I have been avoiding it for years as 90% of my wardrobe is black white and grey and I just know she's going to say I'm a spring. Am sat with the SS Boden catalogue afraid to order anything. Am worried I will react like you kbaby. Was your heart in it? Are you in denial?

Hopefully · 13/01/2012 14:21

kbaby you really can't replicate the effect, don't torture yourself trying.

If you're at all doubtful, email your consultant - they should be happy to try to put your mind at rest.

If you can make yourself have faith and follow your palette/swatches for a while, I promise it will all be marvellous Smile

Gillybobs · 13/01/2012 15:09

Totally agree you need to make a leap of faith, buy a scarf in one of your best colours, wear the correct lippy as advised by your consultant (for me, this was as much a revelation as the clothes and made a HUGE difference) and wait for the compliments. Because they will happen

Also look at photos of yourself in the different colours. I have found when looking through holiday snaps some of the tee shirt colours I think look great in the mirror are not that flattering. However, when I wear my autumn colours I look nice and get compliments.

DonaAna · 13/01/2012 19:06

I had a crisis too after I was diagnosed as a summer (I thought I was spring). But she was right - summer colors flatter me more. Over the past year, I've gradually revised my wardrobe and makeup and look much better. My mother says I look much younger and more alive (and she is always very critical).

For me, the dealbreaker was using summer colors in makeup. Light, cool shades subtract years from my face. Yellowish, brownish shades instantly age me (it would be the other way around for you, I think).

Try the scarf and lipstick test. Smoky blue scarves and cool pink lipsticks definitely make me look better - and again, those would be your worst shades as summer and autumn colors are very far from each other.

RupertTheBear · 13/01/2012 19:16

I am thinking of booking to have my colours done (even though my DH says it is something old ladies do). Do you recommend House of Colour or Colour me Beautiful??

Gillybobs · 13/01/2012 19:22

HoC. I know about a dozen people who have all been to HoC and all loved it

supadupapupascupa · 13/01/2012 19:49

ooh i have a voucher for HoC that I got for xmas. Just need to deliver DC2 and then i'm booking myself in Grin. I'm only 36, but having a wardrobe crisis and hope that this will jump start the 'new me'. (together with a new haircut me thinks.

it will be really interesting to see what is 'right' and what is 'wrong' in my wardrobe.......

Wigeon · 13/01/2012 20:01

I am umming and erring about this too - I had a search of threads in the archives and it was about 50% / 50% with people using HoC and Colour Me Beautiful, and everyone seemed happy.

Am a bit scared they will tell me my entire wardrobe is all wrong...Grin.

kbaby · 13/01/2012 22:20

Thanks everyone. I really want it to work. When I was sat with the consultant I just couldn't see any difference on me, although black did make me look like death. Then when she did my mum I could see the difference. My mum said she could see the nice colours on me so maybe I couldn't be subjective on myself.
The photo thing does sound good so I'll go through the albums and pick all my look ok or awful photos and see what colours I had on for each.

In my head I thought I would be a cool colour and getting my head around being warm is hard, ESP as I hate gold etc. i cant work out why im an autumn as the consultant just told me i was an autumn and not the reason why so maybe its because i cant understand why im autumn as opposed to summer.
I now have a wardrobe full of navy, grey and whites that don't suit me.
Wigeon. I went with colour me beautiful

Sorry it was house of colour I went to.

Gillybobs · 13/01/2012 22:46

Its interesting you say that, everyone I know found it easier to to see the correct colours on someone else than on themselves. I think thats really normal. I think the consultant should have explained to you why they thought you were Autumn for sure. I would email her and say you are struggling a bit and can she clarify. Im sure she will be happy to help you, she wants you to be happy and recommend her after all!

Hopefully · 13/01/2012 22:49

kbaby I absolutely couldn't see it on myself, but could see it instantly on the friend I went with.

Saying that, the first time I had my colours done (with CMB) they were wrong, so if you're really not convinced, then email your consultant and ask exactly why she decided you were an autumn and not one of the cool seasons. She might be able to talk you through the exact drapes that helped her choose. The consultant I saw with HoC (who I could see got it 'right', and I could see it - I am on the cusp of two seasons and v difficult to analyse correctly, though).

Did you leave the session with the consultant confident about the colours looking good? Did she rate your best and worst colours within your palette?

Hopefully · 13/01/2012 22:50

Sorry, should have said:

The consultant I saw with HoC (who I could see got it 'right', and I could see it - I am on the cusp of two seasons and v difficult to analyse correctly, though) talked me through every drape and why she had come to the choice she had about it.

kbaby · 14/01/2012 17:23

She told me why the colours looked good on me and she rated them too with the use of the colour chart, she said I was warm as I had yellow undertones, although ive always thought i was pale and pink. She tried a few colours and said yes defiantly an autumn. I think She chose an autumn as I suited the muddy colours as opposed to my mum who was a spring.
I have bluey, hazelly eyes and light brown hair with auburn colouring to it and pale skin.
Is there a way if I can tell if I have yellow or blue colouring. My mums a tanned sallow colour so its easy to see she's yellow.

NYE The OP corrected herself in the next post, it was HoC she went to

KatyMac · 15/01/2012 21:23

I wonder if the colours/seasons change over the years; I had mine done in 97 & I haven't looked at it for years - I must get the wallet out again

KristinaM · 15/01/2012 21:26

Didnt she tell you which type of autumn you are and which are your best colurs within your palette? And how you are to wear them?

Gillybobs · 15/01/2012 21:36

Katy I asked my consultant about that, she said you wouldnt change season but your "best" colours within the season could change as you age and skin/hair tone alter.

kbaby · 17/01/2012 23:12

Kristina-sorry, she did say which colours and I'm a deep autumn if that makes sense. I guess I'm just having problems seeing the colours on me making a difference. I guess I've worn what I thought were good colours on me but aren't according to the autumn chart that I'm finding it hard to switch over.

I have changed my lipstick though to the one I bought and I love it!! It looks lovely
