Getting layers cut into hair

Talk to me about layers. I've always had a fear of them in case my hair became uncontrollable, but in my old age, I'm wondering if I've been missing out...

My hair is almost shoulder length, dark brown, and fine. But I have lots of it, so it appears quite thick, too thick now. It's relatively straight, but if I don't blow dry it properly, it can 'poof up' and become quite puffy, with a slight kink in it. If I take my time blow drying it, and run the GHDs through it afterwards, it can appear quite sleek and smooth. I've just invested in a Babyliss Big Hair, and if I take my time, it can finish my hair off and make it quite sleek without the need for the GHDs

So, I have an appointment at my hairdressers on Wednesday for a cut and blow dry. I want to keep the length, but have some of the weight taken out. My hairdresser usually uses those thinning scissors and can do this successfully, but would another option be layers? I had layers done years ago, and I was never able to achieve the sleek look as the shorter bits kept sticking out.

I think I'd in a bit of a hair rut to be honest! And it desperately needs coloured again, but I'm putting that off as I'm 17 weeks pregnant. The white hairs are rapidly multiplying though, and they are like fuse wire!

Any advice gratefully received!

I've got fine, thick hair with a bit of curl in it too, and find that having layers cut in really brings out the curl. This can be great if it's cut well, I can just rough-dry and go with a flicky / curly do.

It's probably not ideal if you're keen on a straightened sleeker look (though it's still possible with styling).

lots and lots of fine hair here as well
mine as waves as well
I wouldn't dream on having my hair in all one layer , have alwasy had layered hair because it is much easier to style.
I have a layered bob and it is very easy to style , either smooth with BBH , flicked out with BBH or curly with diffuser . Very versatile cut.

I have similar hair too, I know what you mean about layers sticking out, as a teenager I went to for the rachel cut, this was the era before straighteners and I hadn't mastered blow drying so it looked bloody awful!

Just start off small, ask for some long layers (only an inch or 2 shorter) with a few at the front to frame the face. If they are too short (e.g. from chin length) it looks a bit like a mushroom because my hair is so flat underneath.

I have fine hair but lots of it. When it's longer it looks sort of wispy. And layers make it worse. I've just cut mine into a graduated bob, jaw length, and had lots of compliments. However it's too short to tie back so needs to be blowed dried properly when I wash it, and a quick sweep with the GHDs before I leave the house. But looks way better than longer and is not much more time consuming

I recently took the plunge and had layers cut into mine. I had been growing out a bob and it was beginning to puff out to resemble a mushroom..fine when first straightened but the first sign of damp weather and POOF!

My hairdresser was very careful where and how he put layers in..kept them longer at the back where it needs weight and put more in round my face. I was really pleased and glad I went for it.. i'm trying to grow out my fringe at the mo and it has blended the fringe to the sides nicely. Go for it:)

Be careful you don't end up with a Russell brand cut Shock
