No 'Poo (Thats SHAMpoo, not constipation)

Hi all,
I am almost certain someone will have asked these questions before and received enlightenment, but my forum searches have only returned information on bowel movements and how to bathe angry toddlers.
I am very curious about this no 'poo movement, where you don't wash your hair and eventually it looks lovely and can be naturally be glamourous and smug about it. Online I see lots of instructions for doing it, which all very greatly, and blogs where people tell me how greasy they got and it was terrible and then it was alright, which I don't find very encouraging. Basically, I have overhauled my diet with wonderous results, converted from the cleanse tone moisturise routine to oatmeal cleansing and OCM on my face with satisfactory results and now it's hair detoxing time. Apart from the health aspects and wanting to be naturally lovely, I have little time and little money as I am a mature student, so it would be very nice not to have to shell out for hair goop all the time. I have longish, super-straight fine hair which is generally well behaved if a bit limp. I have quite a lot of hair I think but since it is fine and moderately fair it doesn't look especially full. I have a BigHair thingy now though which is fab! I might cut it shorter, to collarbone maybe so it looks fuller.
Anyway, what I want to know is: has anyone tried giving up shampoo? If so were you converted or have you gone back to the bottle? Is it all a load of parp or shall I give it a go?
Any advice greatfully received!

I've gone low 'poo, ie I don't use hair products with sulphates or silicones in them.
You don't have to spend a fortune on new/more products, just check the ingredients before buying.
It has made a huge difference to my hair: it's looking shinier because I put more effort into hydrating it.
But I have curly hair?it's now super-curly, and everyone notices and has been amazed.
I did try not using shampoo at all for a while but chickened out because I just didn't like the idea, not because it actually made my hair seem dirty or greasy.

Can you recommend a brand Lesser? That sounds like a good halfway house

brighthair · 11/01/2012 20:15

I low poo too with tresemme naturals. Then use a mix of umburto gianni curly girls gel and boots curl cream to style

LesserOfTwoWeevils · 11/01/2012 20:36

Tresemme Naturals are popular but they don't do much for me.
I use Creme of Nature or L'Oreal's EverSleek shampoo, and Garnier Fructis Sleek and Shine conditioner?great stuff, it has argan oil in it.
There's a list of sulphate-free shampoos here but there are others as well?you can google brands for ingredients or check the label, they all list them.

brighthair · 11/01/2012 20:50

Has anyone got a link to silicone free conditioners? That shampoo list is really helpful

kittydinner · 11/01/2012 20:51

Oooh ok... I might try the Boots Naked range then. That's a good compromise. Thanks!

If you're curly, check out www.naturallycurly.com, there's lots of great stuff there, including advice, lists and reviews of sulphate- and silicone-free products.

I have very straight hair, even if I curl it with tongs and product it's straight in 30 mins :)

Wow!
Sulphates and silicones are equally bad for straight hair, though.

kittydinner · 12/01/2012 12:05

Absolutely. And it's a pain in the arse; means I can have straight hair, straight hair, er, straight hair, or a hat.

I only use conditioner in the shower and use no sulphate shampoo once a week ar so.
My coloured hari is much less dry as a result.
