Cheapo products that work really well

It's January and all that so let's share tips about products that are cheap but actually work a treat!

Almond oil - have been using on face at night for about 2 weeks and skin is lovely
Superdrug Vitamin E facial oil - feels just as nice as Trilogy Rosehip oil and is 1/8 of the price
Tesco Aloe Vera body lotion - about £1 a bottle and does just fine for my very dry and sensitive skin
Homemade body scrub - oliver oil, brown sugar and a bit of honey, just gorgeous
Superdrug Intensive Hair Conditioner - comes in a tub, costs about £2, slap on loads of it and leave it for a minute or two, my dry thick curly frizz-prone hair is much softer and more manageable
Boots Curl Creme (pink stuff) - not a wonder product for everyone but I blinkin' love it!

Aqueaous cream is a great cleanser and costs very little for a huge tub.

noddyholder · 11/01/2012 09:52

Superdrug vit e radiance moisturiser on its own or mixed with foundation about £2!

JosieRosie · 11/01/2012 09:56

Oliver oil? A mix of olive and cod liver oil? Wink(yuck) Obviously should be olive oil

Revlon Colorstay foundations. Almost as good as Dior foundations, and on my skin better than any of the three Chanel foundations I've tried. Can be drying, so use a moisturizing night cream.

MuslinSuit · 11/01/2012 10:01

Nivea cream - the original really thick stuff - as an overnight deep moisturiser. Is amazing stuff, seriously! Leaves your skin feeling pretty greasy when you apply it, but by the morning, smooth and soft skin - and it doesn't give me spots Smile I read some model in a mag saying she uses it so gave it a go and no longer fritter £££s on posh night creams.

Olive oil for hair too - a couple of tsps on ends overnight before washing out in the morning.

Are clothes included on this thread? Primark for pants, Uniqlo for dresses and woolies.

StellaAndFries · 11/01/2012 10:07

I rave about them all the time but e.l.f cosmetics, most of the standard range is £1.50, the eyeshadows have lovely strong pigments and I live te cream eyeliners for £3.50 including a eyeliner brush.

DottyDot · 11/01/2012 10:10

another vote for ELF - completely brilliant and you can get loads of different stuff to try out because for £1.50, why not?! And the sizes aren't too bad - they tend to last a long time. Sorted Grin

Vaseline for lips.

Agree about Nivea! I use it as hand cream and face cream.

QuietOhSoQuiet · 11/01/2012 11:07

Boots essential hair serum,60ml bottle costs about £2.50ish and it works just as well as the treble the price varieties

Cristiane · 11/01/2012 11:20

I still do oil cleansing method but not every night, now also use Simple cleansing lotion and a warm damp flannel to clean off -very good, leaves skin very clean and clear and takes off eye make up too.

Bought Simple moisturiser as there was 2 products for £4 at sainsburys, also pleased with that. Still using expensive serum though.

Like the vitamin e superdrug oil, has anyone tried the hot cloth cleanser In the range?

Not really cheapie products but other things I am doing:

Am trying to use up everything in my cupboard too.

Thing that has made most difference to my skin in last two weeks is stopping drinking alcohol

Sparklingbrook · 11/01/2012 11:25

Astral Cream is nice. I also buy the biggest cheapest vat of hair conditioner I can find-rumour has it it's all the same. Grin

I love Poundland and Savers.

ThePhantomPlopper · 11/01/2012 12:36

Dove shampoo and conditioner.

Gertiegoolash · 11/01/2012 12:51

Another vote for blue pot Nivea here, also the lotion in the blue bottle is fab as a hot cloth cleanser.

JosieRosie · 11/01/2012 12:54

Cristiane, I just got the Vit E Hot Cloth Cleanser, tried it the other night - feels fab, just as thick and creamy as the No7 and Sanctuary versions I've tried. I've only used it once but I'm impressed so far.

Sparklingbrook, I can't believe I forgot Astral - my favourite day cream of all time! I have very thick, frizzy and unruly curls and they have always been happy with cheapo conditioner too, so long as I use three fistfuls loads of it Smile

I'm with you on the unruly curls too Josie. I love Astral, its quite thick going on but my face seems to absorb it and it smells nice.

Cristiane · 11/01/2012 12:56

Oh cool Josie - might try it after I finishe the simple. I stupidly bought a different superdrug cleanser and it is so rubbish, so wanted to get a review of the vitamin e one

JosieRosie · 11/01/2012 12:58

I refuse to believe that any of the megabucks moisturisers can do a better job than Astral. Smells lovely, thick and greasy but my skin just drinks it up. I feel it does my skin good over time too - skin feels less dry even without any moisture when I'm using it, so it's not just cosmetic.

Me too Josie. I don't actually know why I bought some in the first place but it was a revelation.

deltawab · 11/01/2012 13:02

I second Dove shampoo & conditioner, the pro-age range has become a life saver - my thinning, damaged hair, now looks shinny and more fuller. But you have to shop around for the discounts, wilkos had it for 99p before xmas, superdrug currently have it at half price. Its usually around £2.30 a bottle.

I only use the Aldi skin care range. The lacura range. Face Serum is £3.49 (anti-aging) and the day & night creams are £1.99. They are the bees knees, no overpowering smell and feel lovely on. I won't use nothing else & my friends insists i don't have any wrinkles/lines! I tend to use Morrisons value wipes to take my make up off at night, or the Aldi face wash.

And, Morrisons value brand nappies (in bright yellow packaging) - been using them a while now, fantastic, 20 nappies for around £1.67 i think, use to pampers, but these are just as good. Not for me obviously, for my ickle man lol!

MillontheFloss · 11/01/2012 18:37

I love Superdrug's Vitamin E and Tea Tree Oil ranges and their MUA make-up range is fab. Great eyeliner and lipsticks.

Another vote for Aldi moisturisers and serums too. Their cotton wool pads are great value and don't fall apart like other cheap ones.

As much as I like cheap stuff and have no complaints with the quality/ effectiveness, I do like to mix it up every now and then with Lancome, Clinique etc so I feel like I'm treating myself. Only when they have bonus gifts though!
