Graduation dress...opinions please?

Hey guys,

Really want to grab your opinions on this dress. I bought it for my graduation this June:

www.my-wardrobe.com/halston-heritage/black-halter-neck-twist-maxi-dress-216026

It arrived today and I LOVE it! However, am thinking...whether it might be a bit overboard for graduation now? I'm not going to the graduation ball so wanted to look nice for the day and the pictures. People do dress up quite a bit for it at my uni and it's the culmination of 6 years hard work so thought I'd go for it. However, as you can tell- still having doubts!!

What do you think? Is it too much? I'm going to pin it up a bit so it's not so gowny and therefore tone it down...worried it might make me look a little 'ott' for grad day still though.

Think about where your gown will finish. I work at a Uni and the best dressed are those where the gown covers the outfit you are wearing. The dress is too long.

I love the dress but not sure if it ott for daytime. Depends on how much you shorten it and what the others will be wearing. What are your friends wearing ?

OnlyANinja · 10/01/2012 21:09

Have you checked the rules on what you are allowed to wear for graduation? Some places are quite strict.

Seems a bit OTT for a daytime graduation ceremony IMO

Hey guys,

Thanks for your opinions. I really dislike my legs so wanted a maxi dress to cover them up. I'll prob just shorten it to calf length. The gown will prob hide it anyway, so you won't even see the back! I don't find many nice maxi dresses and saw this one and had to have it (even though a little ott maybe)... hopefully the gown will take most of the edge of it?

Friends will prob be wearing black dresses too. Uni isn't strict on what they want us to wear, pretty much free to whatever to be honest.

I would say that's too eveningy for graduation, and too long to look right with a gown. And actually, just not the right kind of dress at all. But if it makes you feel good, it is up to you!

Been thinking. The gowns slip off the shoulders quite easily and the people who dress you often pin the gown or sash to your clothes. Because the dress is a halter neck you'll have no fabric to pin the gown to.
Personally I'd wear a chiffon pussy bow blouse in white or cream and a calf length pencil skirt or pleated skirt in black.

Why not wear a really nice (bit dressy, if you like) trouser suit with a pretty white blouse. Then you'll look classy, but feminine, and your legs will be covered. More appropriate than your frock IMO.

I think it is a sensational dress, but entirely inappropriate for a graduation ceremony. It would ridiculous under the gown. Most female students tend to wear knee length or calf length skirts (at the ceremonies I have been to anyway).

I graduated in my early 20s and it was a pretty sober affair with most of us in suits and a white shirt.
I graduated again recently, now in my mid 30s, and I have to say that people seemed to wear what they wanted! IMO some wore dresses that were more suited to a nightclub and yes I sound like my mother
They just did not look right under a graduation gown.
I wore a knee length, round neck, dress from French Connection. I felt smart but not OTT.

Sassee · 12/01/2012 20:49

For where I graduated it would be a bit OTT. I wore a black shirt dress, I seem to recall being advised to wear something that buttons through to hold the thingy that goes round your neck in place!

Congratulations on graduating though, enjoy!

I'd say it's probably not practical/appropriate for Graduation. I have to officiate at a lot of Graduations, and a lot of the girls have difficulty with dresses, because of the fabric/slippage, etc. One tip, if you don't have a button, is to take a strong safety pin, and pin the loop on your hood to the middle part of your bra. Works way better than pinning on the shoulders. Years of practice... :)
Have a fab day!
