I think Ive found my wedding dress. Ok, so its actually a bridesmaid dress, and obviously I wont be going with this colour, but its almost exactly what is in my head. The wedding is in a castle, and its my 2nd marriage. I did the big meringue thing last time and this time want something more elegant. I'm a big lass (s18-20) AND 5'2"

I think it's really lovely - the structure should keep everything in place, and it's for sensible straps without screaming 'sensible' iykwim.

I think it's lovely, really elegant.
I like the colour too ( but i did get married in part black, so in my mind no colour's off limits for a wedding Grin)

LOL at colour 'Blue jist' sounds vair naughty!

Gorgeous dress... love it.

Lovely dress! However, if you are a size 20 and 5ft 2 - I'm afrais it will not flatter your curves at all. It will make you look wide and squat like a lampshade.

Try something with a gentle fishtail hem to elongate your profile....something like this shape?

I speak from experience - I got married as a size 20 and am 5ft 3. There's no way on earth I wopuld have opted for a dress shapped like the one in your link....I would've felt like a lampshade.

Sorry, but you did ask for honesty.

pictish · 05/01/2012 12:21

Even something tailored like this would be more flattering.

Thanks Pictish I did consider the 2nd one you linked to, so Ill try that one on too if I can, was just a little concerned Id trip over the hem! The first is stunning but am really trying to avoid strapless. Nothing less attractive than a bride hoiking up her dress all day! But I take your point on the fishtail.

I think something like the second dress pictish linked to would be better i.e. something fitted on top but floaty below the chest. Also, unless you have toned arms, perhaps dress with sleeves/bolero would be better?

pictish · 05/01/2012 12:35

Truly I remember looking for a wedding dress for myself at roughly the same dimensions as you, and I just know the big wide skirt is only for the slender.

Look for something that highlights your bust and skims elegantly past your bum, tum and thighs.

Haziedoll · 05/01/2012 12:36

I think it depends on where you carry your weight. I have a thing about my arms and wouldn't be comfortable having them on display like that. I could picture that dress with a little bolero jacket over the top. How do you feel about your arms?

pictish · 05/01/2012 12:37

I think the red dress on the second link is bloody lovely by the way....although I'm not keen on the jewel detail. The shape is sexy and elegant all at once.
I could really imagine myself swishing and sashaying around in it.

I don't think the shape of your first choice is flattering either - mainly as it's sooooo plain at the back with nothing slimming. Size 12 or 20, we all want to look as slim as possible! I don't think strapless is a good idea - that's for waifs, sadly. (I speak as a size 14/16 who looks all armpit-fat-gross in strapless anything).

I love the red dress pictish linked to - YY to the brooch style, attention around your bust then sweeping over your frame - would be so elegant, regal almost - perfect for a castle. The colour is divine.

FWIW I also like velvet on larger sizes - I think it helps to go regal and sumptuous as that's not a look that a skinny minny can pull off. So capitalise on the fact you can look úber-expensive and go with it. So think texture, crystals, beading and most importantly - the best supportive underwear you can afford!
