Ive noticed this too much lately, Im sweating so much because Im a fatty but despite the fact that I was and deodorise, I realise I smell, my clothes smell, my bedclothes smell. Its becoming really obvious.

I promised myself that this would be the year that I would start some kind of Flylady for styling myself but I disnt think it would be as basic as general hygiene!!!

What is the best deodorant out there? I try them all, some work some of the time, none all of the time!

Mitchum.

How often do you wash your clothes/bedlinen? I wash clothes that have been next to my skin after one wear, and sheets get changed at least once a week.

Also, make sure you're washing stuff properly. If clothes have a lingering smell, wash them with an antibacterial sports clothes wash (Wilkos sell this).

SoupDragon · 03/01/2012 07:43

Try wearing only natural fibres.

Ispywith · 03/01/2012 07:52

My sister had a sweat/smell prob & got medicated deodorant from her GP

WheresMeJumper · 03/01/2012 08:27

Ok Ill try the Mitchum, I wash and change clothes everyday. Can deodorants just stop working like that?

Earthymama · 03/01/2012 08:30

Yes deodorants can stop being effective after a while, both DP and I change ours regularly.

I second Mitchum and natural fibres. One good thing about the menopause has been the fact I'm not as sweaty anymore.

ohbugrit · 03/01/2012 08:31

Dove do a good stick deodorant which is very effective.

What's your diet like?

WheresMeJumper · 03/01/2012 08:32

Oh its crap, I am trying to make the changes, I but I think maybe the problem is Im getting more overweight really and my body cannot handle it.

Natural fibres are the way to go. You can throw some napisan in with your wash and that kills bacteria and wash clothes at 40 degrees apart from wool. Bedsheets can be washed at a higher temp. Use a gental soap to wash yourself in, like aveen or simple soap. There was an episode about body odour on the food hospital and how in some people what you eat effects you. If you want to lose weight I would advise you to consult with a nutritionist first( if you can afford it), for it to work it has to be a complete life long change not withouth treats . An easy way to eat fruit if you dont like it that much is to make a smoothy in the morning with oats etc that is filling and you can put it in a cup to have on the go. THTH.

FrozenChocolate · 03/01/2012 09:51

wash your towels, facecloths, bedding, t shirts ans knickers at 60 degrees. Everything else ie non sweaty should be ok at 40.

Hi Jumper. I read your post a couple of hours ago but had to come back and reply as it's really been on my mind.

I know nothing about deodorants but I thought your post was really sad and it's made me come over all maternal towards you (sorry Smile)

What made me sad about your post was how you seem to be saying "ha ha I'm such a fatty I've made myself smell now - aren't I silly?" But you're not a joke OP and neither is your health. You deserve to look after yourself better. Do you think this might be a wake up call for you to address your weight?

Go to your GP if you like or join a diet club/gym but I think most of us know how to live healthier. A couple of extra glasses of water a day, lots of fresh fruit/veg/salad etc. The end result doesn't have to be a size 8.

If I've got the wrong end of the stick and you really just wanted deodorant advice I'm sorry to have stuck my oar in. I also hope I don't sound patronising - it's not my intention.

Best of luck.

brighthair · 03/01/2012 14:18

Napisan definitely for clothes. My gym and riding stuff still smells sweaty even after washing. I get a bucket with Napisan and warm water and soak them then wash as usual
Fabric conditioner is also bad for holding smells in as such. Better not to use it
Dove 48hr deo works on me. It's a cream in a stick and about £5. Called max protection

TheSpreadingChestnutTree · 03/01/2012 14:21

Use mitchum, and don't wear tops that lie right next to your armpits, like those stretchy t-shirts, which make most people smell. You need to wear something looser.

TheSpreadingChestnutTree · 03/01/2012 14:23

Also, wear underwired bras if you don't already, to make sure that your breast tissue is not lying on your chest/stomach, so the air can get in there!

valiumredhead · 03/01/2012 14:32

Mitchum is great stuff but makes me have a rash within 3 days, Dove extra protection is fab and very gentle.

Also make sure your clothes are drying properly and not getting musty.

valiumredhead · 03/01/2012 14:33

Also OP, how old are you? I ask because as soon as I hit 40 there was a definite change and I needed to be super on top of showering every day without fail. Before 40 I could skip a shower at a push but now I definitely can't!

CharminglyOdd · 03/01/2012 14:46

I used to have such a problem with this until I changed the type of clothes I wore (fewer tight clothes, natural fabrics... worth the extra expense in the long run as I don't have to replace them so often) and a new deodorant: Dove '24hr Invisible Dry' stick. I cannot recommend it enough - had struggled for my entire teenage years and early adulthood until I found it.

moragbellingham · 03/01/2012 15:14

I find this sure cream to be the best I have tried. Prob in the same league as the Dove one.

It's pricey, but worth every penny.

hellhasnofury · 03/01/2012 15:46

I have this problem and have to use Persirex. You use it at night time then wear your regular deodorant in the day. Initially I had to use it 2-3 times a week, now I only need it once every 3-4 weeks. It can sting but the key is to wash and dry the skin well and only use two strokes per armpit and no more.

I then use Mitchum on a daily basis.

mousyMouse · 03/01/2012 15:52

if you are suddenly more smelly or sweaty it can be a sign of health problems so going to the GP might be an idea.

persons with diabetes might smell of nail polish remover (acetone) for example or persons with kidney problems might smell of wee.

goldbow · 03/01/2012 15:53

mitchum and use talc.

MaeMobley · 03/01/2012 15:56

I must be hormonal. PrimaBellerina 's post made me cry.

MaeMobley · 03/01/2012 15:56

and I can't spell - BAllerina!!!
