HOw much make up do you have and am I extravagent?

I think I am quite careful with what I spend, but I do use expensive face creams and base products such as foundation and blusher- £35-ish for day and night creams, sun block, and the same for a foundation is normal. Blusher I am using at the mo costs £22. But I am oooooooooold so need deserve it. I buy cheaper cleansers though as my skin is fine with those and they cost around a £5.

But the rest- well, I've a couple of eyehadows, an eye pencil, mascara, one lipstick and lipgloss, and eyeshadows double up as eyebrown powder.

But I hardly ever buy another item if the one I am using is not finished or 3/4 used.

I'm way past the age where I experiment much with colours as a) I know what suits me ( more or less) and b) less is more when you are older.

what about everyone else?

I'm surprised you use a cheaper cleanser.
I use Dermalogica which I buy online so cheaper than salons, and it lasts ages.
I use Bobbi Brown, but only have primer, foundation, blusher, powder plus 1 eyeshadow, 2 pencils, mascara and 3 or 4 lipsticks/glosses. I don't buy "impulse" makeup so what I have lasts the year, then I replace...usually mascara 4 times a year.

I have tonnes of expensive make up but have bought very little of it myself. My Mum and sister usually give me make up for my birthday and I've accumulated loads from free gifts.

I spend ££ on foundation and day cream though.

I don't use cleanser, toner or night cream.

ameliagrey · 02/01/2012 12:36

I've used cleaners costing £25 and more- and ones costing £1. One of the best I used was a Boots own brand- basic line- for £1.20. Takes make up off brilliantly and leaves skin nice too. I posted about cleansers last week and said that as they are on your skin for seconds it's a waste of money IMO spending a lot.

I use a Lancome mascara for £20+ and buy 4 x a year too.

Thiswww.beautypedia.com/BestProductsDetails.aspx?bcid=3 is a reay good independent site and gives loads of info on products. It's US so they use $$$ signs, but it's well researched and dispells some of the myths about some products.

I use Clinique moisturiser and foundation. Other brands are fine to begin with but my skin becomes irritated by them after a few weeks. I find the bonus freebies keep me going with lip goss and eyeshadow and I just buy a lip liner pencil from Boots, the odd lipstick and some mascara to top up. I do have Nars stick blusher which has lasted ages and was worth £30+ but all in all I spend very little.

I use cheap cleanser for morning and oil cleansing method at night (also cheap). Use a cheap SPF moisturiser (Olay at the moment, but whatever's on offer when I run out) and a really expensive night oil (Clarins lotus oil). I credit the OCM, night oil (along with a bit of exercise and virtually no booze) with giving me reasonably good skin. Mostly it's booze that makes me spotty though, but I'm too scared to drop the night oil in case the spots return!

I use expensive foundation (clarins again) along with beauty flash balm for special occasions, but use reasonably cheap (usually No7 or equivalent price) eyeshadow, mascara, blusher etc. Oh, and I use either Clarins lip gloss lipstick from House of Colour after getting my colours done - the lipstick is a tiny bit drying, but the pigment is brilliant and it lasts forever.

I am a complete tightwad with make up and only have one of everything and only replace when it's running out. I could actually do with a spare lipstick or two for my bag and perhaps even a powder compact or something for when I'm out literally all day, but I am just too tight Grin

blobtobetter · 02/01/2012 14:11

I like Liz Earle skin care - so not expensive but I love MAC make up and OPI nail varnishes!

DonaAna · 02/01/2012 15:38

I used cheap but decent brands for years (Maybelline, Max Factor, L'Oreal etc). Now that I'm a bit older and have started to know what really suits me, I mostly buy beautifully packaged high quality make-up, mostly from duty frees. A little goes a long way and the good stuff lasts for ages. Honestly don't know why I haven't realized this earlier.

Chanel is my new love. They seem to have do things that I like and need - makeup that looks subtle but good on my pale skin and light coloring. I have 10 Chanel lipsticks (mostly in different variations of rose) and a similar stack of eye shadow palettes and half a dozen eye pencils in my bathroom cabinets for daily use. They just make me feel good, just like nice clothes. I love having them around, love how nuanced they are. (If you want to get started in a HE makeup habit, check out the blog Cafe Makeup.)

I'm still in love with certain drugstore lines from the US. I stock up when I travel there for work (once or twice a year). I like really simple things like Lumene's makeup remover, the perfect whitening toothpaste (Arm & Hammer), Physician's Formula, Almay, Badger Balm, and some Revlon products.

SoFreshNSoClean · 02/01/2012 17:07

I use a mix of expensive and cheap products. I have experimented and know what I need to spend money on now.

Expensive:
Nars primer
Nars illuminator
Nars bronzer
Clarins moisturiser
Chanel lipstick
Bobbi Brown cream eye shadow
Stila blush cream
Eve Lom cleanser
Clinique lip balm and gloss
Estee Lauder foundation
Aveda eye make up remover

Cheaper:
Loreal mascara
Rimmel eyeliner and lip pencil
Essie or Revlon nail varnish
Boots own brand make up brushes
Tesco value facial wipes
Boots own brand sunscreen & sunblock for lips
Vaseline body lotion & hand cream

Catslikehats · 02/01/2012 17:15

I use a mix and regualrly change brands. I am loyal to no one Grin

At the moment I am using:

Expensive:

Clarins flash balm
Estee Lauder double wear light foundation
clinique laser repair foundation
Bobbie brown eye shadow pallet
Bobbie Brown bronzer
Lancome lip liner
Assortment of juicy tubes and clinique tube glosses
Lancome moisturiser

Cheap

No 7 brow pencil - exactly the right shade for me
Max factor crayon liner
bourjois blush
Ponds wash of scrub cleanser anti aging thing - very brilliant!
Simple eye make up remover

I am not using much mascarra as have false lashes whinch are A-mazing (but probably come under expensive category)

I also have an assortment of mac eyeshadow singles and three hundre million lipsticks that I always buy but never wear becasue lipstick whatever the shade just does not suit me.

humblehippo · 02/01/2012 17:44

I don't think you sound too extravagent - pretty normal I think! :)

I also use a mix of expensive and cheap and I do make some impulse purchases.

Daily skincare products are slightly pricier ones for face as for me it makes a difference:

Makeup remover, cleanser, clarifying lotion, 2 x different moisturisers, eye cream are all Clinique but current body moisturiser is a cheap one from Boots Botanics (really lovely - nicer than a lot of expensive ones!) and an Avon foot and elbow cream.

For makeup basics atm I am using Clinique tinted moisturiser or Body Shop oil free foundation but also working my way through some samples of Estee Lauder double wear and will probably buy a bottle. My face powder is a cheap one from Rimmel. Concealer is Benefit Erase Paste or Body Shop Lightening Touch, blusher is Clinique, mascara is No 7 but thinking of changing to Dior on recommendation of my SIL.

I have various lip and eye stuff which is a mix of slightly cheaper brands like Body Shop, Barry M, Maybelline with a few more expensive bits mixed in. I want to upgrade some of the cheaper stuff as it doesn't have great staying power.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/01/2012 18:15

I don't buy a lot of make up but I do tend to buy reasonable stuff when I do. Currently I possess -

Urban Decay Naked set - 35 pounds but really, really lovely
Lancome Definicils mascara (I think it was about 20 pounds) (the only thing I buy over and over again)
Bare Minerals foundation set (48 pounds) - this has lasted nearly six months
Benetint cheek stuff (freebie in a magazine iirc)
Origins Pinch Your Cheeks - a rip off and will never buy from them again as they ignored me when I sent an email saying I was unhappy with it) I think it was 13 pounds
Clinique Black Honey lipstick - I don't like this any more; can't remember how much it was
A Natural Collection blusher - about 2 pounds
1 Urban Decay and 1 Lancome eyeliners - about 12 pounds each iirc
3 Clinique eyeliners - but they are v v old now
Some v v old Clinique eyeshadows - don't like these
Mac Shale eyeshadow (oh I buy this on repeat too)
A Boots No 7 lipstick - don't like this either
A lip plumper thing
A Philosophy lipgloss
Garnier under eye stuff
Lots of nail varnish but mostly only Revlon

Cleanser = Olay
Moisturiser = usually Olay but currently a cheapo Waitrose one

It sounds a lot written down like that. Blush

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/01/2012 18:16

Oh and Beauty Flash Balm - dp buys me this for Christmas or birthdays

ameliagrey · 02/01/2012 19:35

I use
L'oreal age perfect cleanser ( might treat myself to some clinique soon)
clinique youth surge moisturiser- or superdefense
Clinique repair wear antioxidant night cream

Gertiegoolash · 02/01/2012 19:51

Currently using:
Nivea cleanser
don't use moisturiser
Clinique foundation
Bobbi Brown concealer
Clinique Eyeliner
Clinique Eyeshadow
Bobbi Brown Bronzer
Kiko Blusher (it's a new make-up shop in Westfield Stratford)
L'oreal mascara
have lots of lipsticks and glosses mostly by Clinique or Mac
I'm loyal to all these products except blusher, mascara and lip glosses which I tend to experiment with different brands.

MrsSeanBean · 03/01/2012 22:18

I've come to the conclusion that cheap everyday brand cleaners work fine, as do toners, exfoliators etc - Nivea is good. Also Neutrogena.

I have good quality serum - Lancome Laser Focus is miraculous IMO.

Nivea and Olay moisturisers.

Bobbi Brown eyeshadows - about 5 shades

Benefit benetint

Estee Lauder eyeliner

Bobbi Brown gel eyeliner

Nars blusher

Clinique foundation

Estee Lauder and Nars lipsticks (and some Clinique, buy far too many, as I don't use it that much)

Lancome mascara

Rimmel concealer and mineral matte pressed powder

Chanel nailpolish (x 10) Xmas Blush

Elnett hairspray

Perfumes - too numerous to mention Xmas Blush again

HTH

TerraNotSoFirma · 03/01/2012 22:33

About 250 eyeshadows, 13 foundations, 12 concealers, 24 blushers, 6 gel eyeliners, 4 primers, 3 bronzing powders, 4 mascaras, 10 lip pencils, 47 lipsticks, 29 lipglosses.

Guess what I do for a living?

:)

Obviously that is all in my kit box, In my own everyday make-up bag there is

Garnier blemish balm
Erase paste concealer
Bobbi brown eyeshadow in 'bone'
eyelash curlers
Lancome mascara
Mally blusher in pink nectar
keihls lip balm

QuinnFabray · 03/01/2012 23:26

I have shit loads of make up. I didn't wear any until two years ago, and have been a bit like a kid in a sweet shop. I wear a full face every day now, and this year I intend to not buy any more and just use what I have.

Seriously, I have enough to last about ten years.

HarrietSchulenberg · 03/01/2012 23:45

Gosh, I feel rather skanky admitting that my entire make-up bag consists of:

Boots 17 face powder.
Boots 17 mascara (black, lash building or something like that).
Very old black kohl pencil, brand worn off but probably Boots judging by other contents.
Maybelline long lasting lipstick.
Boots No7 foundation that I only wear for work.

Can't use soap/cleansers as they irritate the hell out of my face so I use either just a flannel and warm water, or occasionally do a hot oil cleansing treatment using castor and olive oil mix.

Can't remember name of moisturizer but it's the one you use on babies with eczema. Topped off with a dash of lavendar oil on cheeks if rosacea is playing up.

mathanxiety · 04/01/2012 05:14
