Moisturiser advice needed please

Please oh wise s&b gang, help me. I need some advice on moisturisers.
I'm 44 and have not properly used a moisturiser for 10 years. Used to be good, and used decent products but my face is, frankly, a mess. Thread veins, scarring (especially on chin) redness, spots (that reoccur in the same place repeatedly), dry cheeks and oily forehead, chin and nose, large pores, blackheads. Hideous.
I need a decent moisturiser / routine which doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Any advice?

Avon have a good range of moisturisers. Their book gives good advice as to which moisturiser suits which skin. Also, they always have offers on making them inexpensive.

philmassive · 01/01/2012 18:47

Is Avon stuff ok then? My workmate does it but the bits and pieces I've had have always been a bit rough. Not tried their moisturiser though.

Try Neutrogena moisturising balm - not pricey and excellent value for money, one of the best I've tried and I speak as someone who also used to use stuff like Estee Lauder and Lancome.

Olay Regenerist is good and often on offer. Having said that, I'm currently using a Waitrose own brand one that was two pounds and not finding my skin any worse than with the Olay. The Olay has SPF though.

I got a Superdrug own make, Optimate (?) I use the night cream and I am very impressed by it. It's very thick but rubs in really well.

I'm your age and have used this for the last couple of years. Tis lovely, light and not greasy, soaks in lovely and really does make your face feel moisturised. Cheap too!

With regard to cleansing - what do you use? have you tried oil cleansing method sounds bizarre but really works.

Furball · 01/01/2012 19:15

sorry - don't know why - but you need to scroll up when you've gone to my first link

have you thought about a laser clinic? can be a bit pricey but the only thing to get rid of thread veins / redness etc. The moisturiser Aldi do has had really good reviews and the price is great too.

No 7 skincare is nice, and is always on a 3 for 2 or boots will give out the £5 vouchers so you could try some for less money?

philmassive · 03/01/2012 18:30

Wow, thanks everyone, that's great. I'm going to have a scout around and look (and smell Grin) these various options. Thanks for your input.
I'm really interested in the oil cleansing method. I can't imagine how greasy you must feel though. Has anybody done it and can describe how long it takes to work? Also do you think it could be done using bio oil? Just thinking that it might help with scarring? Any experience?

I always use No 7 but normally only when I have a £5 voucher - otherwise I think they're a little over priced.

Furball · 03/01/2012 21:44

I have used bio oil (and M & S body wonder oil) - both fine!

You get all the greasyness off with a warm damp muslin or flannel afterwards.

You will be amazed how gunky they are - and all that was in your face!

surreyhousefrau · 04/01/2012 12:30

Hi, I have exactly the same skin as you describe, I'm beginning to think the recurring spots on my chin are hormone related, things may be changing...

I'm afraid I can't give you the name of a magic potion, but I have been doing a-googling (which made me think of looking on here !) and I think I might try giving moisturisers without mineral oil a go as even though there's some debate, some believe this is a skin clogger. Neals Yard /Origins pricey but my thought is that you'd spend that on a top and your face is always on show.

good luck, know how you feel, i've never had such awful skin.....

sleepysox · 04/01/2012 12:38

I second the oil cleasning method. Over Chrsitmas I stopped using it and my chin and jaw are full of cystic spots, I usually have dry cheeks and enlarged pores. After 2 days back on the OCM I'm already seeing a difference.

With regards to moisturiser, I started using Dermalogica Hydrating fluid. It's very lightweight, and has cleared my dry cheeks. I use it on its own if my skin is spotty or under a moistriser if it's dryer. It's the only moistusier I've found which doesn't cause me to break out in spots. HTH

DHC do an oil cleanser for £15.00. Seems expensive but will last for the year. Plus they also send you loads of free samples regularly

I use Rodial cleanser which is an oil based gel - however it is pricey. I would recommend getting some muslin cloths for cleansing too. You can get these from the Chemist.

Open pores are often a sign of poor cleansing. A regular weekly deep pore clean will tighten them up if that is the case.

It feels wrong to use oil at first but your skin feels fantastic after it.

MissFoodie · 04/01/2012 14:34

surreyhousefrau definitely mineral oil and silicone free, they clog pores and give the illusion of moisture, but just sit on the surface of the skin.
You don't have to spend a fortune to get something good, I have reviewed zillions, from £8 to £80 if you're interested, am a MN Blogger: yumetc.blogspot.com

surreyhousefrau · 04/01/2012 17:20

your site is looooovely, oh dear ...the children are going to have a late tea...... thank you !!

MissFoodie · 04/01/2012 20:58

hahahaha thanks :)
it's a lot of work, but worth it when someone like you says they like it!
there are 2 or 3 features on moisturisers, called Moisturise Me, start with first one as gives some background. Same with Nourish Me which gives you background on face oils. Enjoy!
