Cutting your fringe yourself

AvadventKalendar · 31/12/2011 14:56

I've just done the MN haircut in readiness for tonight, done it many times with no problems, something has gone wrong this time and I have fucked up my side fringe and now have to cut a full fringe back in.

Followed a tut on youtube saying to do a triangle then pull it down to level with your bottom eyelids and cut around your thumb as a guidemand it's even worse than it was! The side are fine but the middle is about 3 different levels kind of layering my fringe on the outside with obvious "ledges"

I can't afford or get to a hairdressers.

HELP!

oh no I don't know what to suggest other than clipping it back in a quiff or to the side until you can rectify it!

MrsSeanBean · 31/12/2011 15:03

I'd advise leaving it until you can get it sorted out. Sorry that's not very helpful, but you might end up making it worse. Also, after you've washed / restyled it, the 'ledges' probably won't be so visible..? Hope you sort something out.

Sympathies, I've have plenty of home hair disasters.

Any chance you could get to a hairdresser and ask for them to trim your fringe? Wouldn't cost much, if anything, especially if you can squeeze a few tears out.

Oh god, a nightmare.
If you have a Headmasters around they do free fringe trims.

I have memories of my mother cutting my fringe..........

AvadventKalendar · 31/12/2011 15:10

I physically cannot get to one today, too far out in the sticks and not enough time left Sad

Blakey it's kind of too short to clip back now. I had it clipped to the side after the first part of the cut and DP said it looked very bad. Think Olive from On the Buses Blush

MrsSB - will go rewash it and straighten it too, that might help Smile

Why do we decide to do these stupid things?? Especially when going out for the first time ever on NYE!!!?

I have thinning scissors, would that work with ledgey bits do you think?

Am contemplating getting the DP's hairclippers out and going all Sinead atm!

Off to wash again, will report back!

Step away from the scissors.
Do not cut any more till you've rewashed and straightenend it.

I am a regular cutter of my own fringe. The important thing is to never pull it while cutting. It needs to be sitting exactly as it would be when you wear it normally. So wash it, dry it and brush it so it's sitting the way you want it. Then spray with lots of hair spray so it can't move. Then cut, leaving it a little longer than you really want it as the hair spray does weigh it down, maybe half or quarter of an inch.

Seeing as you think you have already cocked it up, I would be wary of doing too much more. If it is a bit shorter in the middle it's better than the alternative. I would do as I suggest above, but instead of cutting across, use the ends of the scissors to cut into the bits that are too long, not cutting them off completely just softening them. Do not what ever you do try to "even it out" by making the longer bits the same length as the short ones. Then brush and style it and no one will notice. Then get to a hair dressers before trying it again yourself.

OTH, if you are brave and can carry it off, just follow instructions and have a super short fringe, hopefully like this not this (the 2nd one, which is how I used to have mine) Hmm.

right it looks better washed and dried, have yet to straighten though, passable enough to go out in I think, DP thinks different but hey he has a mullet what does he know Grin

I plan on finding the darkest corner or party to sit in and will not be moving from there! DP suggests wearing a novelty snowflake deely bopper to detract from it Hmm it's not THAT bad!
