Help me choose a red lipstick please

I don't really wear lipstick and tend to just eat it when I try to. However, I do recognise that I look better in it and would like to make 2012 the year that I finally manage to, 'Do lipstick.'

Can you recommend a decent red that is long lasting but won't make my lips feel dry please? I have v pale skin with a hint of yellow and quite thin lips (I sound gorgeous, don't I?).

Chanel Coco Rouge Rouge Orage and Chanel Rouge Allure Flamboyante are good ones. Ask to try them at the counter first (they will put it on your lips), red is not a color you want to buy blindly. You may also need to line your lips.

I've worn lipstick for 25+ years and red is still hard for me. Nearly reds are often much easier than true reds. Also keep an eye on how your teeth will look. It sounds like a slightly cinnamony or peachy almost-red could be the way to start.

My best lipstick color for everyday wear is ever so slightly darker than my natural lip color. Red is for special occasions only.

Thank you. Never been to a Chanel counter.

Could you perhaps recommend any brands/shades for normal everyday use as well please? Maybe something cheaper than Chanel? Perhaps a sort of nude or a muted raspberry-esque?

The easiest red I know is Nars Gipsy. Not very long wearing though, but feels very comfortable on the lips.
Max Factor do some felt tip pens, they are long lasting and stay sheer. I don't find them drying but YMMV.
They also have a new range of reds - if you apply with your finger they can be sheer.
Lisa Eldridge has a video on this on her blog.
She's lovely.

If you are not used to wearing lipstick and have thin lips, it is quite ambitious to start with a red - you will feel very 'made-up' in a red lip, it's not an easy look to wear (although when you get it right, it is fabulous).

An easy, natural colour with a very creamy, non-drying texture is this one:

In shade 'Sunbeam'. Although I have loads of the pink shades (cos they're cheap and nice) and they are all very wearable. There are several red shades too, may be worth buying 'soft red' for a bit of an experiment?

...'perfect pink' and 'seashell nude' are both very nice also if anyone is thinking of ordering a truckload like I did Grin.

Thank you. Will google Lisa E. Can't get your link to load, Emsy but will try googling that too.

Will go and play at the Max Factor counter.

Illamasque have the most amazing collection of red/bright lipsticks. Reds are fab but you'll be amazed at other bright colours that suit. I love bright lipsticks. Mac also have great colours to choose from.

Cherries in the snow by Revlon is a pink red which is very retro and easy to wear.

Parisian Red buttershine by Clinique - can't rate this highly enough!

Having tried virtually all available on the high st/dept store route (which all looked a bit heavy) this is different because it's wearable for me. It's moisturising - if you know the buttershine range you'll know what I mean and a bright pinky-red.
It's not long-lasting in a perfectly done way but the pigment lingers IYSWIM.

It's a bit of a risk to buy as it's only available from ebay I think but it's my fave.

A second vote for Parisian Red Buttershine, got this for Christmas after seeing it recommended on here & love it. I have been trying to get into red & finally feel brave enough. I do have to make a supreme effort to apply it well, keep reapplying it & am constantly licking my teeth to make sure they're lipstick-free! It's not something you can just put on, eat, drink etc & end up still looking lovely - you have to put in a bit of an effort but it's worth it

Thank you - lots to look into now!
