Shouldn't be in the style section, but...Is it possible to buy a non-embarrassing dressing gown?

My house is cold. I like lounging. I need a thickish dressing gown.
Mine atm is dark navy and towelling, but my watch catches on the fabric so it's looking very very shabby.
I had a look in JL today and they are all Cath Fucking Kidston or mushroom-coloured fleece. I don't mind fleece (I wouldn't choose it if I didn't have to though) but dingy beige is not my scene.

Is it basically something that you can't have warm and ok for answering the door to the postman in?

Try the White company

snowmummy · 28/12/2011 20:51

I take it you don't like Cath Kidston stuff? Me neither. Why not wear some pj bottoms and a warm hoody type top?

MrsCampbellBlack · 28/12/2011 20:53

I've got a dull rose coloured one from the white co - but its still very clearly a dressing gown. Not fleece though - can't bear the feel of that on skin after a bath.

For warmth - I'd go for a nice cosy long cardigan to put on - again white co good for this and also hush - sale should be on soon.

WowOoo · 28/12/2011 20:54

I was going to suggest White Company also.
Saw some lovely ones yesterday - good reductions. Really soft, long, generous sizing and also in proper towelling and not smooth synthetic stuff.

I was about to buy one when my sister reminded me she bought me one last year Blush

Oh snowmummy, if ONLY. It can be totally baltic in this house. I need length, coverage, insulation!

It's just not possible, is it? There is no such thing as a nice AND thick dressing gown. Maybe I should just get a slanket and be done.

look at mens gowns

LePruneDeMaTante · 28/12/2011 20:56

OK I did look at White Co website. The trouble is, they're all rather mushroomy-coloured. Mocha, blush, whatever. I'll go in and have a look in person though, thanks Smile

Slanket's are very practical. I know, my mum bought me one. I've never quite got over the static shocks. How about a sleeping bag? Wink

Second White Company, bought one in November much reduced and it is sumptious and cosy. Not embarrassed to open front door in it.

mejon · 28/12/2011 21:00

Lands End have some thin fleece ones - I think they're called dreamfleece or something. Nice colours too - not sludge or white (sorry White Company fans!). I've just bought a fairly hefty cotton jersey one from there for myself for Christmas. I'm 5'2 and it nearly touches the floor on me.

Have a look at House Of Fraser's Linea range or google Pip Studio.

yy
Men's gown the way forward
Nice navy towelling with a hood
Maybe even JL?

AlexandraMary · 28/12/2011 21:08

I just bought a unisex hydrocotton navy one from the white company in navy and it's lovely. not as towellingy as normal towelling. DS1 says it looks like a wizarding robe. Got £15 + cashback+ free p&P in sale.

I've spent most mornings in the past few years lounging in my housegown in my kitchen with maids/nannies/gardeners/repairsman. I love Japanese nemakis (=cotton kimonos lined with gauze). They are stylish and warm and incredibly soft, like walking in a cotton cloud. Love them. My current one is a lovely red and white pattern, but it's easier to find them in blue and white graphic patterns. Check ebay for nemaki.

Matsikula · 28/12/2011 21:52

Toast always do nice thick flannel ones that aren't too twee, and usually something crazy expensive in a glamorous but impractical fabric like silk velvet as well.

BurntWitch · 28/12/2011 21:56

I got one for Christmas from monsoon and it is lush - its so thick and warm and it has a hood so I can snuggle right in when I'm watching telly on the sofa Grin

PersonalClown · 28/12/2011 22:23

DP got me one from Asda of all places.
A lovely dark purple fleece one with a hood! With my big fluffy slippers, I can't moan that I'm cold!
