Best foundation for 30 something combination skin

redheadsunited · 27/12/2011 20:00

Am new to posting on MN although I mustadmit i have lurked for ages! - as the title suggests i would love some advice on the best foundation for combination skin with a smattering of wrinkles. Previous foundations have either been to thick or have left my face shiny within an hour - would love something with a slightly dewy finish without leaving my face like an oil-slick iykwim
TIA

trt Clinique Superbalanced or maybe Bobbi Brown oil free/matte one?

I am 32, with similar sounding skin, I hate anything too heavy and often wear tinted moisturiser for this reason. I really wanted something with a little more coverage without it seeming too heavy though (but that stopped the shine). Having read on here that Estee Lauder offer a small pot of their foundations to test I recently went and asked to try their Double Wear Light and must say I love it. Every day that i have worn it someone has commented on how nice my skin looks. It costs nothing to try so maybe go and ask if you can test. I've gone back and bought a tube now!

Estee Lauder Doublewear is fantastic for staying power, definitely try it, you will get a 5 day sample from any counter. If you find it a bit heavy, as some do, mix it with a tiny bit of illuminating fluid (you can get these in Boots for about £8) and you will get all of the staying power with a slightly more dewy finish

I have 30-something combination skin and I'm wearing MAC studio fix at the moment, although Double Wear Light is on my shopping list for next time. The original Double Wear I found very heavy and hard to blend, although it must suit a lot of folk as it is very very popular.

WeirdFishes · 27/12/2011 20:48

Double wear is great, must try the double wear light.

drcrab · 27/12/2011 21:05

I started the thread about foundation for my skin (oily but dry?!) etc. I'm 38. Many recommended the estee lauder double wear and yes I did get that and yes it is great ! Grin

Cankulzof · 27/12/2011 21:11

I have your skin (not in a sinister Silence of the Lambs type way)

When I had cash I wore Double Wear, it made my skin look fabulous and it didn't feel like I was wearing foundation.

I am now skint and none of the cheapo brands come anywhere close

redheadsunited · 27/12/2011 21:15

oh lots of replys thankyou ladies!...am very tempted by the Double Wear Light. Anyone know of anywhere to get it at a good price online?

I have very annoying skin - It is pale and mega-oily and I still get acne, but if I "attack" it with spot medications or drying stuff it then goes flaky and dry! wtf!

Most foundations I've tried look like a greasy mess within an hour, but also cling to any dry patches. grrrrrrr.

However I did think doublewear light was good and lasting. Body Shop Oil Free foundation was great for not going greasy but if you get water/rain on it it goes a bit mosaic-like and even the palest tone was a bit too orange.

Best I've tried so far is Mac Studio Fix - it lasts, goes on easily, and gives good coverage. Doesn't stick to dry patches or go shiny on greasy bits (except maybe a little in summer) x

DWL is great except if you are very pale (the lightest shade is satsuma orange on me, I'm NC10 or thereabouts). So definitely swatch before buying (you will get a free sample at EL counters if you ask for it).

If DWL is too orange on you, Revlon Colorstay in Ivory is worth a try. It is neutral on acne skin, longwearing and covers pretty well acne scars and other discolorations. It has different formulations for dry/normal and oily skin. Worth a try, not expensive. I've been using it for almost 15 years - always on a lookout for a better one but haven't found it yet. Regular DW is worth a try too, but I found it a bit too chalky and matte on me.

Quodlibet · 28/12/2011 18:09

Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua = beautiful. Pricey but you only need a little bit for light coverage so it lasts ages. Maybe try to get a sample of that too?

PiratecatClaus · 28/12/2011 18:42

Clarins, go to a clarins counter. i have combo older skin. dry patches. their True Confort one is light, with good coverage and it doesn't sit in your pores or your wrinkles.

i also mix it in summer with Olay multi radience fluid. or put it over a layer of that fluid. i can't recommend the Olay enough.

TheProvincialLady · 28/12/2011 18:51

I have been getting on really well with the bare escentuals mineral foundation. I got a trial set for £12 from lookfantastic.com and it's still going strong 2 months later. 36 with combination skin.

QuinnFabray · 28/12/2011 19:16

The Shiseido sun protection liquid foundation is amazing. It has the staying power and coverage of ELD, but feels weightless. It really is amazing. If you get the chance to try it, do! I do like ELD though, it's all in the application. I use a very small amount and blend quickly with my fingers. A primer underneath helps. Always looked heavy and cakey if I applied it with a brush. You only need a small amount. ELD light is also very good. But . . . Shiseido sun protection is better. It really is a well kept secret.

QuinnFabray · 28/12/2011 19:18

I'm 36, with ageing skin, which is also very oily, by the way. And 95% of all foundations I've tried slide off my face within an hour, or make me look like a powdery old lady.

redheadsunited · 28/12/2011 20:16

Thankyou for all the advice...looks like quite a few of us have the same problem!. Am going make-up shopping soon and will report back. X

I am 39 with a few (but not too many!) wrinkles and combination skin and use Lancome Teinte Miracle. It is the first foundation I've ever bought a second (and third!) bottle of - it is light and evens out my skin colour but doesn't feel heavy or give me spots.

redheadsunited · 31/12/2011 15:05

Thank you WillPenn might see if I can get a tester of the Lancome one at Boots.

I use Lancôme teint idol, very good.

TongueTwister · 31/12/2011 19:55

With a powder over the top.

hermioneweasley · 31/12/2011 19:58

Mineral foundation (I think lily lolo is best for my oily skin) looks amazing and lasts all day. My skin is so much better since I ditched liquid foundation. Go to a bare minerals counter and try it.

Am a Bare Minerals fan as well. It lasts for ages, and doesn't dry my already dry skin.

flakemum · 31/12/2011 22:19

Another vote for double wear light I have tried many and none are as good as this one for blending staying power ect. I love it and no longer look elsewhere, faithful for 3 yrs now!
