help me figure out if this is a good deal or not!

So the local beauty salon/mini spa has a 'deal' where if you commit to a six month contract at the rate of £150.00 a month you can have unlimited beauty treatments, this includes everything from threading, to massages, facials, waxing, shellac/mani/pedi and eyelash extensions--everything on their treatment menu even IPL/electrolysis and other permanent hair removal things, everything is included except botox and dermal fillers (which are not on the treatment list, but have to be asked abut). And I asked repeatedly if they have black out days etc. So far they've made the whole thing sound reliable. I wondered if they were going out of business, but they are currently distributing fliers for another branch opening in a slightly more upscale area.

Initially, I think it's a good idea because a hollywood wax is at £35.00, mani+pedi is anywhere between 30 -£50 (if you are going to get one of those fancy shellac/gel stuff) Then facials are at 40, massages are an average of 60 and threading is anywhere from £3.00-£17.00...

Monthly I do try to get the following done:

once a month:
Hollywood wax
Half leg wax
underarm wax
facial

twice a month:
massage
manicure
pedicure
eyebrow threading

Now if it's an unlimited scheme then I think I would like to do:
an hour long massage once a week
waxing once a month, possibly try IPL
Facials twice a month
eyelash extensions (every two weeks, never done it before)
spray tan (once a month? never done this before either)
mani+pedi every two weeks like normal
threading every two weeks like normal

what do you think? I asked a friend and she said this was too much to pay; but DH thinks this is a great deal. I can't decide. Help me!

If it's legitimate it's great, but I'd be suspicious that they were going under or, they'd never have an appointment free.

eandz · 24/12/2011 16:39

Thats what I'm wondering too, but apparently they are only taking a limited amount of members. I just don't know if it's a good idea or not...should I try it? Should I skip it?

There is a local salon here who do unlimited spray tans for something like £70 a month, so £150 a month for everything sounds cheap... I would be worried too about the lack of appointments. Although perhaps they are hoping/expecting that a lot of the people who sign up will not come that often...? Or will come a lot for the first month and then not bother/be too busy.

I asked about this too, they said that if I wanted (afraid that I wasn't going to get my appointments) that I could draw up a planner ... but I am just too on the fence.

On one side, it seems like such a good deal to me, but on the other--can I get these treatments cheaper?

should I do it? should I skip it?

How long do you have to sign up for? I'd go for it.

eandz · 24/12/2011 17:32

The lady speaking to me told me they only want 100 members for this club, and that so far they have 35 people signed up, I can sign up whenever as long as there is still space. I liked that she didn't pressure me to sign up right away, and gave me all the details. I just don't know if It's worth it. I think it is, but what if I've made a mistake?

I would go for it. Double check about appointments. And if there is a cancellation period so if things don't go according to plan you could cancel? As a massage lover I would be concerned if the massages were not very good so I would get one pronto.

Also will you be expected to tip after each service? If you don't will the service go down?

In sum I would sign up in Jan when salon is up and running so you can see what bookings and service are like.

thenightsky · 24/12/2011 18:08

I'd go for it... I'd love to have IPL and it would work out a cheap way to have it.

I'd double check the tipping situation though - that could add a lot more.

emsyj · 24/12/2011 18:12

Maybe they're just quiet for appointments - the cost of running a salon is overheads, the stuff you use to do treatments is mostly quite cheap in my (very limited) experience. If they've got a salon that's only running to 50% capacity, this is a good way to use up the dead time and still have some money coming in I guess.

I say go for it and see. They may well withdraw the offer after the 6 months if they have managed to drum up enough business at full price.

eandz · 24/12/2011 23:24

I hope you're right. I'll sign up and see, maybe if I pay my first month with a cc I'll be protected by insurance if anything bad happens?

If a deal seems to good to be true, it normally is. I think you're right to be cautious.

eandz · 27/12/2011 19:13

Okay, so I signed up over the phone today. They have an online appointment booker where you can make all your own appointments.

I hope it's not a scam. argh, so scared.

I reckon you have got a good deal... I would have gone for it for the IPL alone.

eandz · 27/12/2011 23:12

yeah, I just booked my first IPL for my underarms. I hope it goes well. I'm scared!
