where do you put blusher?

I am completely clueless about make up - went to a beauty counter and they said to put blusher on my cheeks then a bit down my nose and a bit on my chin. Is this what everyone does?

Surely you then look like you have some kind of condition...were they talking about highlighter? Blusher is just for cheekbones

sunshineoutdoors · 22/12/2011 09:16

No it was definitely blusher... she put some on me and then I stayed out shopping. Hope I didn't look weird...

i put it on cheek bone angling upwards a bit ..not all the way to hair though

not the apple sticky out bit when you smile..think that looks a bit panto damelike

the areas you mention are where I would put a bronzer or all over very light blush powder
basically the places the sun would hit your face to give a natural glow

arf..i sound like a bloody advert

MarchelineWhatNot · 22/12/2011 09:19

Yes, don't listen to anybody who says 'put blusher on the apples of your cheeks'. I don't know how old you are, but if you are older than 17, then this will just make your cheeks look sunken which is very, very aging.

etJeviensEntretesReindeers · 22/12/2011 09:55

No it's not. It all depends on the shape of your face.

I wear blusher on that bit. Not a lot mind, just a little dusting...it looks fine.

I already have really noticeable cheekbones though so anything there (along that line I mean) would make me look weird, it would be too much.

I just use it to make me less pale iyswim, not to highlight the cheekbones.

Definitely not on your nose or chin though, that sounds scary...unless you have a very pale complexion?

humblehippo · 22/12/2011 10:25

I put blusher on my apples and it is not aging, panto dame like and doesn't make my face look sunken! Basically if you use it where you naturally blush, you shouldn't look too odd. Down the nose does sound a little weird to me but you would hope the lady at the counter knew what she was doing....Confused

etJeviensEntretesReindeers · 22/12/2011 10:34

Oh glad it's not just me!!

Everyone has a different shaped face. It just depends where it looks good on you.

When I was about 13 I used to do the whole 'highlight your cheekbones' thing but now I actually HAVE cheekbones, that looks ridiculous.

I already have the big fluffy hair, batwing jumper and skinny jeans thing going on. I do not want to look completely like Olivia Newton John. Xmas Grin

mm-mm

It differs as to what your face shape is and how young you are not and actually which colour you're using.

Me personally, if I'm using pink I use the apple as a natural flush (this is more a summer look), if I'm using peach/coral I use the cheekbones.

Also a good tip to use a very light dusting under your eyes to get rid of the reverse panda from under-eye concealer.

For your nose/hairline/chin, you'd need a very matte bronzer.

OP, go to the Sali Hughes columns on guardian.co.uk - every week she talks you through one subject and does a video to match. It's the easiest and least intimidating way to learn all about makeup.

sunshineoutdoors · 22/12/2011 11:52

Thanks pinot I'll try that link. tbh the more I hear the more confused I get!

It's a case of trial an error, sunshine. Just grab a pack of babywipes, sit in front of a mirror and try different things...you'll know what works quite simply if it makes you look prettier! Common sense would really tell anyone that we all have different shaped faces so we all do our makeup differently to each other.

For eg, my sister puts bronzer underneath her cheekbones and no blusher - looks great. On me = big fat moon face. See what I mean?

If you're on Facebook, that Sali Hughes has a brill group - called Sali Hughes Get The Look which is full of lovely ladies helping each other out and recommending links and stuff. Tis fun :)

BellaVita · 22/12/2011 12:39

I put it on my appley bits too.

I tend to do apples - where I naturally blush.

I always wonder "what were you thinking" when I see the ladies with 'go faster stripes' of blusher.

I usually just do tinted moisturiser/mascara/eyeliner, but when I do add a little blusher it makes a huge difference (for the better) - must make more effort.

My Clinique blusher brought circa 1998 has just run out - will buy some more over Xmas hols.

etJeviensEntretesReindeers · 22/12/2011 15:23

Lequeen, have you tried a powder blush instead? I don't have to rub mine in, or take it off at night, it just brushes on and sits there for a while before falling off by itself.

I use Bourjois but then I never did grow up make-upwise Xmas Blush

I have also just discovered some amazing colours in lipstick, which I have always been too scared to wear - Calvin Klein do sets of three, and they're on offer at TKMaxx which means you get three different lipsticks for a tenner, so I bought both packs and found that two of the colours actually suit me Shock I mean at least one of them had to, right?

So I am currently rocking the eighties look with lipstick and a bit of eyeshadow and I feel much younger. Tis grand Smile

Pinot · 22/12/2011 15:54

I still use powder blush sometimes - I have an olde worlde Estee Lauder one and it's a great soft pink colour when on (heinous hot pink in the tub. Is always the way...).

LeQ can't believe you have difficulty with make-up. You're so, you know, that in my head

humblehippo · 22/12/2011 19:53

I always use powder blush rather than creme. I always thought creme blush was only for those with dry skin, whereas mine is more of a combination oily.

HauntedLittleLunatic · 22/12/2011 19:57

What are the appley bits?

BellaVita · 22/12/2011 20:02

Haunted, if you smile, it is the plumpest bits either side if your nose.

I use ByTerry cream blush and out it on those bits end then blend it slighty outwards.

BellaVita · 22/12/2011 20:03

Put

BellaVita · 22/12/2011 20:04

Blimmin typos Blush end and

coffeeinbed · 22/12/2011 20:14

I use two - one, a light bronzer or taupe colour one - NARS Douceur, Laguna or similar in a C shape just under the cheekbone - feel it and then apply the blush very lightly in a circular motion.
Then a brighter colour on the apple-y bit, apicot - MAC Fleur Power is fab, or pinky one, again lightly, you can always build up. My current fave is a Givenchy Prism, which in itself has four different colours desighted to blend, you get a slightly different shade depending on which way you move your brush.
Then blend with a clean fat brush.
[exhausted just writing that, but honestly, not all that complicated]

coffeeinbed · 22/12/2011 20:16

Oh and no shimmer or glitter or such for the bronzer. Must be mat. There's actually bronzers for men which tend to be mat - forgot the make.

TracyK · 22/12/2011 21:53

Benefit hula is matt.
