am thinking of investing in a primer - is it worth it? anytime i ve gone to make up counters they re always ravng how i should use one ... but it is another marketing ploy or is it worth it - and if so what one is good ?

i dont like them. if i use one, then after a few days my skin just isnt happy. i think its the silicone in them. sorry

hillee · 18/12/2011 09:25

definitely worth it - I only discovered it early this year, and it has completely changed the way my makeup performs. I use the Mac one.

allohora · 18/12/2011 10:46

Definitely worth it. benefit surprisingly good - also Laura Mercier.

I think they work amazingly well for holding make up in place, but I do find that after a few days my skin deteriorates - spotty, greasier etc.

I've found Clarins Beauty Flash a good compromise - it helps hold make up in place and improves the look of my skin. I don't think it works as well as a 'true' primer, but doesn't knacker my skin either. I use the eye one too.

I once saw a video on you tube of a woman who put eyeshadows in one eye with primer, and withour primer in the other eye. She then showed the results after half an hour and then again after several hours. The eyeshadows with primer stayed put and well defined for longer - the difference could be seen after half an hour.

This is not the one I saw, but it claims to show the difference:

Worth it. If I need my make up to really last, I use mac prep+prime for my face, urban decay eyeshadow prime, mac lip prime, and urban decays setting spray. Does me a full day, whereas otherwise its off in a couple of hours.

Salvora · 18/12/2011 11:36

Also, I don't recommend Urban Decay's primer. It's good, but the bottle and the applicator are wrongly designed.

  • The bottle is thin and tall and it's impossible to get the product out when the bottle is half empty. Someone (on youtube too) showed how much product there was still inside the bottle by cutting it by half. I bought Urban Decay's and I can't actually cut the bottle with any of my kitchen knives, so I guess I'll be throwing away a lot of product when I can get any out of it anymore.
  • The applicator: I always get the primer in between my eyelashes. I think it's better to apply with the fingers, because that's easier to control.

So I would recommend to buy a primer that comes in a little pot, where you can see all the amount there is, and so that you can apply it with your finger tips.

Also depends very much on what type of skin you have. I have oily skin and a good primer makes a huge difference. I love MAC prep and prime SPF 50. It's completely different to the non SPF one, and really great for oily skin.

hermioneweasley · 18/12/2011 18:17

Ditto, oily skin and primer makes a big difference. I have tried a number and find Avon magix to be just as good as more expensive brands.

WhoKnowsWhereTheMistletoes · 18/12/2011 18:27

Not sure about face primers, I haven't noticed much difference there (I don't have very oily skin though), but I have been using eye primer from GOSH in Superdrug. It's a twist up stick, it goes on a bit white and pearly looking, which shows through some eye shadows a little (that's the downside), the upside is that my eye shadow just stays put all day long, whereas without primer it sinks into the creases and starts disappearing within a couple of hours.

hifi · 18/12/2011 18:37

primers

valiumredhead · 18/12/2011 19:14

Barbara Daly primer from Tesco IS worth it - a tenner for a pot which lasts ages. I have used LOADS of them in the past and this really is fantastic.

bigTillyMincepie · 18/12/2011 19:18

I got persuaded into buying a mousse one from Space NK which is pretty good, even for an old crepey like me.

Bunbaker · 18/12/2011 19:28

I got a free sample of a l'Oreal primer. It was ghastly. It felt like I was putting putty on my face. I normally just wear tinted moisturiser and blusher and don't bother with eye make up so I remain unconvinced.

willybreeder · 18/12/2011 19:55

Oh I love the L'Oreal primer, you only need a tiny amount and spread it on gently, around the eyes it helps blur the look of fine lines and around the nose pores are covered up. I fancy trying the Tesco one next. I also use the urban decay eyeshadow primer which I love but will be tempted to try the GOSH one now

echt · 19/12/2011 12:21

Laura Mercier.

Nude ( Australian)

ChristinedePizaTinsel · 19/12/2011 12:32

The first time I saw a friend while wearing the l'Oreal primer under my make up (I'm another tinted moisturiser only type) she asked me what I'd done as my skin looked so fabulous! So I definitely rate them. I am quite old though and find they blur fine lines and fill in big pores. If you're young with perfect skin, I doubt you'd notice the difference

PattySimcox · 19/12/2011 13:16

So lhave I got this in the right order?:

cleanser
toner
serum
primer
moisturiser
foundation
concealer

then make up?

Crumm24 · 19/12/2011 20:34

Personally, I love the Clarins Instant Smooth primer - it is expensive but it really softens lines and fills in pores. As I have oily skin, and often use it instead of moisturiser on work mornings when I don't have much time. Would really recommend it.

norriscoleforpm · 20/12/2011 09:05

I got a free L'oreal one too - had no idea what it was to start with Blushbut I did quite like it in the end!

theseventhdwarf · 20/12/2011 16:03
