Wellies - boring question alert

NoseyNooNoo · 17/12/2011 22:51

I need some more wellies because my current ones have a crack in them. They were floral ones and I bought them way back before patterned wellies were fashionable.

I wear my wellies for gardening and walking in the snow when needed. I don't need them to be high-fashion but neither do I want them to be too bog-standard.

I have no intention of spending £50-100 on a pair. Someone at school was saying I had to buy a pair of Hunters. 'In my day' they were rather Sloaney, now they seem quite chavvy with people wearing them as a fashion item when out shopping(!)

So what would be a good pattern/style - or do I just go down to the garden centre and get something really utilitarian?

Wellies have made a bit of a comeback and are all over the place - if you just want something good for the garden then look in the supermarkets... you'll be able to get something 'garish' or 'trendy' or just plain passable for not many pounds...

put 'ladies wellies' into Amazon and all manner of patterns turn up there!

Just go for bog standard green wellies and get the best quality you can afford. They do the job you need, a welly is never going to be a real fashion accessory.

I got some lovely ones from Joules for about £36 iirc. Got the stripy ones & they've had lots of compliments. They are soo comfortable compared to my previous old ones. With hunters, you're just paying for a name IMO.

I second Joules wellies. Good quality and not too pricey. I bought them with a 20% off voucher so even better.

The problem with cheap supermarket wellies is that they are made of very stiff rubber that doesn't bend nicely, so will rub your shins while walking and give your poor foot blisters (voice of experience speaking). Especially horrid to use when gardening where you'll have to do a lot of bending and kneeling.

The Joules wellies are wonderfully stretchy. I wear them with Joules welly socks, which makes them even comfier! I wear wellies a lot in winter as every other weekend seems to see us in a muddy field, so it was important that they were good quality, but paying £100+ for the name Hunters just didn't pass my stingy-test Grin

I bought some Joules wellies a few years back and they are great. Comfiest wellies I've ever had.

I recommend Muckboots. Not cheap, but much cheaper than the posh wellies. They come in quite a few styles, and are lined, which makes them totally waterproof and very warm. Mine are knee high ones, with a stretchy panel at the top, and are used as riding boots in these country areas.. My DH has a different style which he wears for fly fishing. Very, very good value and seem indestructible.

if you can find a retailer of viking boots, these are boots which would last for years. our local kids clothing shop has them for children but the owner got a pair for herself when placing the order and i'm rather envious! (she said she'd let me order a pair next year)

I have a pair of Argyles (made by hunter but for farmers !) so they have great tread ideal for slush and use down the v muddy allotment they are fab and were about £30-35 . They are black with a pinky/red band around the top - They are wide around the calf which I needed - if not really liked the Joules ones a friends had hers for years, normal hunters not as good think more fashion now..if bigger budget I would get Muckboots

My cheap wellies split in v wet dorset and swore never again.....
