I am naturally a mid-brown, very ashy, no warmth at all. At the moment it's dyed a sort of honey/caramel blonde (it was a tint, not bleach) but I have major roots showing. I fancy going a reddish light brown colour, I think something like this

Will this work on my dyed-blonde hair? Will it just go bright red on the dyed bits and be much darker on the (natural-coloured) dark roots? And isn't there something about going darker then lighter turning your hair green, or is it the other way around?! Is there anything I mustn't use?

I know itr's dangerous to mess around with hair colour yourself but I just can't afford the salon colour anymore.

Try one of the Nice n Easy shades in the brunette range. A caramel brown/ light chestnut brown would be good. Don't be tempted to go down the Auburn route as it could turn purple. You want a red brown that is medium in depth. Once you have that you can always pop a semi over the top if it is not red enough but stick to red browns as it can all go a bit clown head. HTH.

Thanks, Cess! Why could it go purple - because of my blonde tint?

Yes! Then it could wash out pinkish. Not natural. You really need a deep base for auburns as they can turn really dark as the blonde grabs the colour. If you think medium reddish brown the roots should blend. If you just pop a ginger/ strawberry blonde colour it will turn bright and uneven. You will in all likelihood get root glow. Build it up is my advice. Also dyes always turn out much darker than suggested by the packaging. You need to use a warm toned brown to avoid it turning green on blonde.

Always do a test piece first!. Backcomb a small amount of hair and snip off the hair left in your fingers ( this avoids making it look like you've cut a chunk off )

Tie selotape around the end of the hair and dip it in the colour for the required time. Hair can turn a greeny colour when going from blonde to brown so you should always add a red pigment first to counteract this ( even a wash in red will be fine). If you do ever go green, add some red and then put your final colour on. Hey presto!

The colour your'e thinking about has red pigment in it by the sounds of it so I would guess it would be ok, as I said though, make sure with the test piece!

Oh the irony- I'd love my hair to have no warmth and just be brown, and it keeps going that colour when I don't want it to Xmas Grin

Could you possibly link me to the brightest, reddest colour you think I could get away with? All those brunettes from the Nice & Easy range don't seem very red at all :(
