Help! Mystery lunch (??) out on Wednesday!

DH is taking me out for some sort of very belated birthday lunch on Wednesday. (I think it's lunch. Really, I don't know.)

He's sorted childcare.

I assume it's somewhere reasonably fancy. Maybe Club Gascon? Maybe that Jamie Oliver place?

I just need to work out what to wear. My current plan is:

  • flared plain black skirt, knee length
  • opaque thin tights
  • short black boots, with a low heel
  • thin black knit top
  • fancy weird Chinese-ish jacket thing, shiny green.

Does this sound too scary?

I haven't got much in the wardrobe, and lots of it doesn't fit (too big), and can't really go shopping ... not ideal.

are you going to have the bacon ice cream if its the Fat Duck?

NotQuiteCockney · 11/01/2006 08:55

I do like the idea of the British Library, I've never been. But there's some specific stuff I need to look up there, really, so I'd want to be going in with a list, iyswim.

I'll try everything, if it's the fat duck. Bacon ice cream sounds nice. Bit treyf, but nice.

Oh, I know the kids will be fine. The woman who's coming is DS2's favourite person in the whole world, I think.

Would he sleep in his pushchair?

NotQuiteCockney · 11/01/2006 08:58

Yeah, he might. I will suggest that if they can't cope with the option of leaving him to shout for a minute.

We once left one of these two people with DS1, when he was about the age DS2 is now. He couldn't face any crying at all, so he got DS1 to sleep on his (the adult's) chest in DS1's room. Madman!

His problem, though!

NotQuiteCockney · 11/01/2006 09:01

Absolutely! And classic behaviour of someone who knows they're only dealing with this situation right now, rather than every day!

Both of the people are really lovely with both kids. One of them has managed with the two of them for an afternoon before, actually.

But they'll have a better time together, and the kids will enjoy all the attention.

(We're really lucky to have friends who are so good with the boys.)

It was indeed the Fat Duck. And it was lovely.

Worth knowing, though, the taster menu takes 3.5 hours to have. Maybe 10 courses? Maybe more? All tiny of course.

Oh, and I ended up wearing my silk trouser suit, silly boy shoes (with pinstripes and floral pattern on them), and a very pale blue/green satin blouse. Was very happy with outfit. The trouser suit is a bit too big now, but comfortable, anyway.

YAY FAT DUCK!!

(dh went there with a greedy colleague a few months ago. Loved it. Said the dining room was full of men dining with a greedy colleague. So "corporate" was the right look after all )

NotQuiteCockney · 11/01/2006 19:26

It really was lovely. Apparently it's a giant PITA to get a booking, though. He said, every day they release the bookings for two months from then. They go in 30 seconds.

It's really weird, since yesterday's lunch, I've had some toast, and some breakfast. I sorta can't face eating. (This is not typical of me.)

I don't know whether this is because the food was so incredible (and it was), or because the food was so odd, and went on for so long. Three and a half hours of eating is a long time!

We got the Family Food cookbook, which looks pretty good too. I'm dying to try cooking roast meat at a low temperature for ages, only DH is insisting I must wait until we get rid of our current (rubbish) oven ...

Oh, and he hadn't booked the Fat Duck when he had planned to take me out in October, he'd only got Club Gascon then, as he couldn't sort Fat Duck in time. Never planned to take me to Fifteen.

I do miss Club Gascon, we might well go next month. I'm campaigning to go early in the evening and bring the kids, if possible ...
