Mutton for Men?

Going to regret this aren't I?

Checking out S&B there are usually loads for threads with women worrying that something is "too old" for them. Hopefully they are all reassured: wear what you like!

To be honest, until visiting S&B, I'd not heard anyone use the phrase "mutton dressed as lamb" - other than my Grandmother over 20 years ago. And one of her hobbies was disapproving of the younger generation and anyone who associated with them.

Taking Vivienne Westwood's motto that "life is too short to wear boring clothes", I tend to be fashion conscious. I am also conscious that I am approaching a certain age....

Is there such a thing as mutton for men? Should I care?

It sort of depends what you have in mind and you will come across varying opinions here. A while back Jamie Hince got a right slating on here.

I saw a man the other day who was easily 50, he had dyed black hair, bright magenta/purple skinny jeans on and a black puffa jacket. I can definitely say that look was a little ridiculous on him (especially with his beer gut), and probably any bloke over about 25 for that matter.

That said, if my 46 year old OH dressed like most other men his age I would weep.

I think, as with women, it is a case of recognising what works on the individual rather then their specific age. I don't think you should stop expressing your individuality once you get to a certain age, you just need to know how to do it tasefully.

tbh primarkman most men just look sooooo boring all of the time, a man who cared about his appearance AT ALL, would stand out like a great big lovely thumb. If your current wardrobe extends beyond beer belly covering checked shirt worn not tucked into jeans, more power to you. At this time of year pubs and restaurants are full of mismatched couples - she having thought and planned and shopped and dressed and he having put on what he always wears. Which is generally the outfit described above. HavingKittens gives good advice. This is what I will add. Don't dress like an Italian man. Of any age. Unless it is one of D&G.
