Tell me how mad this would look?

I normally wear black bootleg trousers and a colourful top when I go out. I fancy something different for an evening pub meal next week. I've seen something completely out of character for me in a shop called Ego (don't think it's a chain store). - a ruffled cape like this, they only have black.

I'd like to wear a skirt and boots, but I only have one skirt, it's like this but in black.

So, arbiters of style - what do you think? Acceptable or would I look like an explosion in a laundry basket Grin

I think you know the answer!
You would surely be taking the cape off indoors? So can you not wear it over your normal stuff? if you want a change, get some slim trousers and heels, or shoe boots?

rookiemater · 03/12/2011 20:14

The capes ok but I wouldn't be wearing it with a skirt, agree with tracy I'd go for slim trousers or leggings and boots instead.

sausagesarenottheonlyfruit · 03/12/2011 20:16

No to the skirt.
Yes to the poncho with slim trousers.

thenightsky · 03/12/2011 20:19

Skirt is not good.

Go with trousers, but slim rather than bootcut, and wear high heels.

tethersjinglebellend · 03/12/2011 20:43

It's almost a yes in a Stevie Nicks kind of way, but then it's a no. To both. Sorry.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/12/2011 21:57

No, no, no. Sorry but no. And no to black trousers and a colourful top as well, sorry - it is the sort of thing that my mum would wear (she's 60) to go out and I'd say only okay if you are that age too. If you want to treat yourself to something new I'm sure that we can find you something much nicer.

Mandy2003 · 03/12/2011 21:58

Thanks all! Owing to a badly broken leg which never set properly I can't wear a short skirt, tight jeans/trousers/leggings or any heels at all. I think I've stuck with the bootlegs because my trainers can be hidden under them. My boots are not-quite-Uggs (a flat black faux-suede pair with more definition to the soles than Uggs). A bit like this. But that's the limit of my footwear options Sad

I get sick of being stuck in such a rut, but I'm so limited in what I can wear. Perhaps a very patient personal shopper at Debenhams might come up with something?

Do you want to buy anything new or choose from what you already have?

Mandy2003 · 03/12/2011 22:26

Well, new really Smile - I think my wardrobe could do with a seasonal injection of a new garment up to maybe £30. Oh, Remus, I'm not about 60, more like 40! But due abdominal problems as well I cannot wear structured or tailored clothes (too painful) so waistbands have to be elasticated. (It gets worse doesn't it...)

Have you got any nice jeans? Could we try and find you a jumper/top to wear with 'going out' jeans maybe?

Or could you maybe wear a jumper or jersey dress and opaques, if the dress wasn't too short?

tethersjinglebellend · 03/12/2011 22:41

Sounds to me like a jumpsuit may be a good option:

Warehouse

Boohoo

Isme

Mandy2003 · 04/12/2011 11:16

The jumpsuits look very comfortable but due to the abdo problems making me severely apple shaped I can't wear anything like that, ditto jersey or knitted dresses. Jeans are a no-no - much too painful to wear! Also, everything has to button up at the front, can't move my arms sufficiently to wear pull-on tops or dresses or anything that does up at the back.

How bout straight but not too tight jeggings or trousers? M and s have nice velvet jeggings which I sized up in as think they are quite tight in the leg. Size up and get dressmaker to take the waist in a bit. Then they are nice and straight. Or get dressmaker to take in one of your pairs of bootlegs and tuck into some biker boots.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 04/12/2011 16:14

Or how about a shirt dress?

OneHandFlapping · 04/12/2011 16:22

Can't you tie a piece of string to a safety pin, and attach to the back zip, drape the string over your shoulder as you pull the dress on to your shoulders, and use that to pull the zip up? You wouldn't need much shoulder flexibility to undo the safety pin from behind your neck.

You might need a friend to undo it though at at the end of the evening Grin

HugosGoatee · 04/12/2011 16:28

Maxidress with a long thin cardigan over the top would work? You can wear your flat boots underneath too.

this would be lovely with a long necklace and a floaty cardi or furry gilet / coat, for a look similar in style to the items you posted but more modern Smile

tethersjinglebellend · 04/12/2011 18:59

Was thinking a shirt dress too... how about this with wide legged trousers or even your bootcuts?

Mandy2003 · 04/12/2011 19:59

Wow thanks everyone, you are really getting stuck in!

I'm not sure about maxi dresses 'cos I'm short, but that shirt dress looks great. For some reason leggings always fall down on me - big waist and no hips I suppose?

Thanks for the tip OneHandFlapping!

We like a challenge, Mandy Grin

Have a look at Land's End for shirt dresses too.

LauraMercier · 04/12/2011 21:33

Peacocks have some lovely dresses that you could wear over trousers, cant link as in phone but at least 3 on thereci reckon would be stretchy enough to step into. Lots there for less than 20 quid. They also have nice snake skin ballet flats for 8 quid. You could get a really amazing outfit for 30! Could you wear thick opaque tights? If you could you'd be all set. If not could you stretch to another 15-20 quid? DP has velvet treggins and other styles of trouser at 30% off - ends today though
