Wedding make-up - thinking of doing it myself... Product recommendations?

Just had my wedding make-up trial, and I'm not particularly keen on the result, so have decided to try do my own make-up on the day.

The thing I am most concerned about is longevity. Can anyone recommend make-up (foundation, eye-shadow etc.) that actually would last through the day? My trial make-up hasn't lasted particularly well, so am wondering if investing in a good product would make more sense?

Also, my wedding dress is a bluey, silver colour, so any nice eye-shadow and lipstick recommendations I would be very grateful for! I have a pale complexion, and a highlighted, blond bob.

TIA

Hello, I'm a make-up artist who does weddings and my advice is to use primers, these are the key, the ones I love are L'Oreal studio secrets for under your base and Urban Decay for eyeshadow. Its a shame you didn't have a good trial, what I'd suggest is practice doing your own as being nervous on the day and trying out a new look is not good, it's nice to feel pampered and relaxed on your day. Wish I'd agreed to my friend doing mine!

Agree on primer - it does make a difference.

I like MAC studio fix fluid as foundation - it's really long-wearing and easy to apply. It also gives good coverage, which you will need to get a nice finish in your photos. I use MAC loose powder over it but my personal favourite loose powder is Dior and I will be going back to it after my MAC tub runs out.

Avoid Estee Lauder Double Wear and Touche Eclat as they can cause 'ghosting' in pictures - where the flash bounces off the light reflective particles.

Bear in mind that if you want to look natural and 'polished' in the photos, you will need good foundation coverage and quite a defined eye. Check out the zillions of make-up tutorials on YouTube for suggestions on bridal eyes.

I'm not a make-up artist (just an enthusiastic amateur) although would love to be Grin. How did you get into it willybreeder ? (Sorry slight thread hijack...)

I believe Clinique Buttershine lipsticks are nice and natural colours - I know of a couple of make up artists who use them on brides a lot. NARS blush in Orgasm is the blush of choice - and on my shopping list. If you look on Make-up Advice Forum you can find example faces showing how different products look on the skin, and lots of tips and product suggestions.

Thank you for the advice!

Am currently doing a bit of internet shopping - just got my primers, and I'm going to make my way to a MAC and a Clinique counter in the next couple of days.

I'm really glad you informed me about the Double Wear and the Touche Eclair emsyj as I was going to use my Touche Eclair, and my mate had recommended Double Wear so was tempted to get some!!

I am still a bit daunted about my eyes so will get on youtube now...

Just thought of another question - I am concerned about my face looking red as I do have very rosey cheeks, that get rosier with every alcoholic drink I have - should I be applying something with a green tinge as a base?

Should probably add that I also that I have dry skin.

I find it quite hard to get a nice result with green cover-up - you need to use hardly any and just pat it on very lightly, then let it dry and apply foundation over the top. It's tricky to get it right though, and you will look like a grey corpse if you make a poor job of it. Ask at MAC whether they think a good coverage foundation will be enough or if you need colour correction, then get them to demonstrate on you AND practice before the day.

Yep I did my own. Used a loreal primer and you have to get the Urban Decay eyeshadow primer as someone said further up the thread.

I also bought the urtban decay face spray that you spritz on to 'set' it. Mine lasted all day and night and didn't feel heavy.

As for products, anyone on here will tell ou Estee Lauder double wear foundation. It's fab for the long day/photos etc.

I had eyelash extensions so only neeeded a touch of eyeliner and I had a lovely palette of Nars eyeshadows (gold and browns)

Also had an Estee Lauder double wear lipstick. Which stayed on all day and felt really comfy - and I never wear lipstick.

Oh, and Nars orgasm blusher.

I felt so much happier doing my own as I practiced before hand and tried out different products.

My SIL did her own wedding makeup and just used MAC products. She looked gorgeous. She went to the MAC counter and got them to put all the products on her and demonstrate how to get the look she wanted before she bought, then recreated it herself.
