Are those really expensive hair straighteners they demonstrate any good?

Every time we go to Westfield DD makes a beeline for those people who demonstrate the hair tongs and straighteners and rave about how amazing they are and then own up that they cost about £100. DD has set her heart on getting one for Christmas but are they really worth it?

Ghd well worth it

JjingleBeanplusPudalltheway · 02/12/2011 08:52

GHD's are very much worth the price tag, I have very long hair and they make it a mere minutes job, fantastic!

wonkylegs · 02/12/2011 09:05

I am a skinflint very careful with money and think my GHD's were worth every penny.
I do have very long wavy/curly fine hair and bought the wide GHD's and it takes very little time to achieve brilliant results. It completely changed my idea of them once I used them as before I'd tried a cheap one off a friend and decided it was all too much of a faff.

CeliaChristmasFete · 02/12/2011 09:14

Another ghd lover! I bought cheap ones which never got hot enough, £30 down the drain. I had my ghds 3 years ago and use them 3-4 times a week. They're great.

I definitely recommend GHD over 'high street' straighteners and GHD is well-worth the money. I know they are very expensive but it works wonder. I even use it on my husband wavy and frizzy hair (he has shoulder length hair) and his hair stays straight for a couple of day.

Also, a friend of mine dropped hers and it's stopped working. She sent hers to a electrician (can't remember the name, but they repair ghd straightener) and the electrician replaced the chipped board and warranty the chipped board for 6 months, i think it's about £30 to £50 for repair but it's better than buying a new one!!!

I have a broader one as I have thick long hair and it does work through my hair a lot quicker than the 'standard' ghd. Look round the internet as there's lots of promotion going on and I saw a pink ceramic plate and it looks fab! Grin

I bought some babyliss ones after reading reviews about how they are as good as or better than GHDs. Amazon has them for around £20-30, I've got dd a set for Xmas too. Then, on black friday they had GHDs for £50 so I got myself a set.

The difference is huge! they glide through my hair, I didn't think they were doing anything at first. My hair feels so much softer and more natural with them. It swishes about rather than hanging rigidly poker straight. It's as good as when the hairdressers do it. I'm def hooked on GHDs now.

AngelDelightIsIndeedDelightful · 02/12/2011 09:42

Another ghd fan here. I recently had my very long hair chopped off and my previous straighteners were too big. I took the plunge and invested in the thin ghds and they really are brilliant. I now understand why everyone raves about them.

So, I have a GHD, but I also have a coriolis that they demo at selfridges. I'm not sure if it's affiliated with the brand that demonstrates at westfield. The reason I have a coriolis too is because I was traveling home and didn't want to take my GHD. Now, I almost never use the thing--not even sure if it works anymore.

My GHD is good, but the Coriolis is better. Between the two, I wish I had tried the Coriolis first. GHD--sometimes I have to go over a strand of hair more than once (I have incredibly thick hair) but I never have to go over a single strand with my Coriolis. It's so good, I've bought the curling tongs too and I love them.

Between the two, I think GHD is good, but the Coriolis is great. Try them out, see if they are being sold on Ebay.

xx

Being poor I've bought a number of straighteners over the years - all well known brand names for about £30. Someone bought me a pair of GHDs as a present and I was converted.
My hair is thick and frizzy and they really do glide through whereas the others snag a bit and need going over more than once.

sazm · 02/12/2011 13:39

i have corioliss C1 straightenersn (red zebra print ones) and they are FABBY, they were £50 and are much better on my hair than GHD's :)

deltawab · 02/12/2011 13:55

For the last year i have been using Babyliss straighteners as at the time of buying, i couldn't spend so much on GHD's, which i'd had in the past. I've found them to be okay. I'm not supposed to know, but my hubby has got me some GHD's for Christmas - and what i have noticed it that there operating temperature is now around 175-185 as opposed to what it use to be 230? so it'll be interesting to see how the new GHD's work.....

Hopstheduck · 02/12/2011 17:50

Deltawab, I didn't know that, but had noticed they do seem a lot cooler. But they really do work!

JjingleBeanplusPudalltheway · 02/12/2011 20:47

That will be why mine aren't quite as quick as my friends older ones!

pollywollywoowah · 03/12/2011 07:18

I've had my ghd's for seven years and they are used four times a week and are bloody fab. Well worth the initial investment.

Bellavita · 03/12/2011 08:22

I love my GHD's.

Chandon · 03/12/2011 10:08

depends on your DD's hair.

My hair is almost straight (just a bit wavy) and a cheap highstreet one on lowest heat works for finishing off the look, IYSWIM.

But I don't really have frizzy hair, so don't need anything "stronger".

What's her hair like?

trixymalixy · 03/12/2011 20:28

GHDs werevthe best £100 I ever spent. Totally transformed my life as I was spending hours with crappy straighteners to try and tame my wild hair. gHDs take minutes and the effect lasts much longer.

piellabakewell · 06/12/2011 22:42

The ones they were demonstrating are not GHDs. The card says Herstyler. Her hair is very thick and wavy .

I would never have been able to have had a chin length bob without my GHD's. Too curly, thick hair. I couldn't live without them.
