Make up brands for teenagers

I need to buy Christmas presents for two teenage cousins (15 and 17). It's not a huge present - budget around the £15 mark.

Does anyone with teenagers (or who is less out of touch than me) have any ideas what make up brands they might rate? I'm thinking eye liner, shadow, or gloss, etc. They both appear to go for the 'lashes of liner and mascara' look when I've seen them recently. I don't mind if it's one small item if it's a brand they are likely to think is good - doesn't need to be a cheap big set (if that makes sense).

Thanks. Totally clueless!

Urban Decay is good and appeals to teenagers. They do great eyeliners and eyeshadows with glitter in them (but good quality rather than just gimmicky).

Benefit. 'cool' for teens and good quality stuff.

Secondtimelucky · 01/12/2011 18:53

Ooh thanks.

Hadn't thought of Urban Decay. Bit of sparkle might not go amiss.

Is Benefit still cool - it certainly was a few years ago, but I wondered if the fact that it's now in every Boots meant teenagers would turn up their noses.

How about Barry M, not the most expensive but loads of glitter eyeliners, mascaras, dazzle pots of sparkly eyeshadows etc. You could a really great selection for your budget and the sell it in boots and superdrug.

That's a good idea too. Thanks everyone. Will have a scout.

You'll get more for your money with Barry M than Benefit or Urban Decay, and it's still good quality, maybe better for the younger of the two. Urban Decay do a nice eyeshadow collection called naked that pretty much suits everyone, think it's around £20 usually

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/12/2011 22:03

The Naked set is lovely but is 35 pounds.

My two (14 and 16) like Maybelline Great Lash mascara and Barry M nail varnishes. DD1 loves her Mac eyeshadows but only has two - they are around a tenner each.

I think Benefit do a black eyeliner, which may go down well? DD1 got one free with a magazine once and seemed to like it.

louby86 · 01/12/2011 22:48

Sorry Blush I must have seen it on holiday or had a voucher or something

Havingkittens · 01/12/2011 23:00

Benefit's black eyeliner is terrible. Don't touch it with a bargepole! I got one free with that same magazine and was sooo pleased I only had to pay £2 to get it.

huggiemonster · 02/12/2011 08:12

Boots have lovely stuff. It is called Frontcover. Packaging looks great plus it is on 3:2.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/12/2011 19:11

Really Kittens? DD1 is clearly more easily impressed!

Personally, I rate Urban Decay eyeliners: I think they are about 11 pounds.

javo · 02/12/2011 19:27

My DD1 (18) rates urban decay and Mac and lusts after and spends a lot on them as do her friends. My less fussy slightly younger 2 like Boots Natural Collection and ELF which are much cheaper

EssentialFattyAcid · 02/12/2011 19:29

Neutrogena skincare is great

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/12/2011 19:31

DD2 likes Natural Collection too - everything is about 1.99.

Well, unless I got unlucky with mine. I found it somewhat transluscent greyish, came off very quickly and ran as it has a lot more wax in it than pigment. The best liner pencils I've used are Jemma Kidd and Chanel for staying power and pigment. The Urban Decay ones get rave reviews but I've not tried them yet.

I am a make up artist so I am probably a lot more critical of products than a teenager would be Wink. I am not enamoured with Benefit, full stop though. I think most of it is style over substance with the exception of a few products, according to some. I've tried 8 separate products of theirs so far, mostly through magazine giveaways and have been disappointed by all of them except the Kitten glittery powder - but how hard is that to get right?
