How to go from medium/dark brown hair to light/medium brown?

I got fed up with highlights as it was ruining my hair so had my hair dyed brown about 6moths ago which turned out mousey. I then had it re-dyed but it came out really dark although did fade a bit but still not the light warm brown that I wanted. It looks ok in the light but nearly black when dark. It is possible to go back to a lighter warmer brown and if if so how which colour should I use? I need my hair recolouring every 5 wks weeks of the greys.

I am naturally a darkish chestnut and dye my hair a few shades lighter with permanent hair dye. I have tried numerous brands (I buy what ever's on offer!) and they all have done the job.

The trick is to buy lighter than you want (i.e. the woman on the pack is a shade or so lighter than the hair you want) as if you look at the 'colour achieved using this product' bit the dye only comes out at the pack colour if your hair is a certain colour to start with (usually practically the same as the dye itself!).

If you used permanent tint then you won't be able to lighten it now without using bleach, only the regrowth will take the lighter tint. I say this as I was in the exact same position as you a few months ago and was quite annoyed with myself Grin

My solution was to have a t-section of bleached highlights, tinted light brown, which 'broke up' the darker brown base but without being too contrasting. I also had a lighter (as you describe, medium warmish) brown to my roots. I could then get away with a few months of just the tint as the regrowth came through and the bleach faded up in between so took the ting each time, which maintains a slightly lighter overall effect.

My hair is quite long but grows quickly and I have to cut and re-colour about every 5-6 weeks to prevent grey roots (boo hoo!) so figure I'm need to re-do the highlights in the new year to keep the blended look. It should take me another 12 months or so to be able to go back to home colouring.

Sorry, that was long, but I feel like you have my hair 4 months ago Grin

how about that colour remover? and then dye it the colour you want, i agree they all come out much darker than they look on the box.
