Where to find 100% cotton nightgown for eczema-prone 11-year-old?

I know virtually all designated nightwear for children has to be flameproof, which rules out cotton, but dd breaks out in scabs if she wears polyester next to the skin all night. As of now, she can just about wear a 6 in adult sizes... but it drowns her a bit. Any helpful ideas very welcome!

ooh i am slightly weirded out by this! my boys pyjamas are, without exception, all cotton.,
and yet the same shops i've got themn from seem to only sell polyester nightdresses.

how odd!

i am a woman on a mission now though... watch this space

sieglinde · 29/11/2011 09:15

Bless you, thisisyesterday. Alas, I think I know why; the legislation relates to the idea that pyjamas are worn close to the body, while nightdresses could flutter into flames. Perhaps they could... though most people with open fires etc need to do a bit more to safeguard their dcs than put them in polyester.

Boden £20 each though

thisisyesterday · 29/11/2011 09:16

ahh i see.

i'd have thought polyester would have burned easier than cotton anyway?

dont know anyone who's handy with a sewing machine do you? am sure it wouldn't be too hard to make them

bamboobutton · 29/11/2011 09:21

i was gobsmacked to find out about this ridiculous legislation so made it my mission to find a pure cotton nightie, found loads but they are all covered in flameproof chemicals, which is no good for eczema.

when dd gets to nightie age i am going to dig out my sewing machine and make them.

sieglinde · 29/11/2011 09:42

I know, bamboo and thisisyesterday - I might have to make them. Agree about the chemicals - insanity health and safety legislation! MNHQ, are you listening? Can nothing be done? Why only nighties? And how is the Boden nightie exempt? (thanks for it by the way - not exactly cheap, though...)

i think the boden one has flameproof stuff on it too :(

Noodlemacdoodle · 29/11/2011 10:05

You could ask your GP for Tubifast clothes, they are cotton and have vests and leggings. They go under the normal PJs and protect from eczema creams underneath

betabaker · 29/11/2011 10:47

I have 2 Boden ones my DD has grown out of - very good quality. Don't know how you feel about 2nd hand but I presume any 'stuff' would have long been washed out. Long with long sleeves, floral print. Was going to put them on eBay...

idlevice · 29/11/2011 10:54

Have you seen healthy-house.co.uk? I think they do underclothes but not the actual nightclothes, v pricey tho.

MissWooWoo · 29/11/2011 11:13

does it have to be a nightie? these look lovely

sieglinde · 29/11/2011 11:13

Really kind advice. Many thanks to all. betabaker, I'm fine w/2ndhand, but she is nearly 12. This is also why we're having so much trouble - I still get a rash from e.g. polyester sheets in hotels/hospitals, but the assumption seems to be that only babies suffer thus - healthyhouse seem to stop very early. The tubistuff too is like what I had as a child - but I only use it on the dcs when they are having a rash outbreak; this is supposed to be only about prevention.

White Company ?

MissWooWoo · 29/11/2011 11:17

flowery

spotty

MooMinCow · 29/11/2011 12:33

DD has had cotton ones from Boden, White company, Cath Kidston until I found some Hello kitty ones from H&M. they are short sleeves and more like oversized tshirts, thinner than the others but are a lot cheaper (£6/7). they're normally hiding in the accessories bit next to undies!

TruthSweet · 29/11/2011 13:52

Would a cotton slip work instead of a nightie?

Or strappy cotton dress (like a camisole vest top but longer)?

jm2 · 29/11/2011 21:44

I use this site to buy pjs for my son with excema. www.eczemaclothing.com/

kateecass · 29/11/2011 22:07

Am having the same problem with my 3 year old DD. She got a flare up on the back of her knees at half term and it's only just getting under control (I don't like using the steroid cream too much). At the moment I've got her in cotton shortie PJs with a vest underneath most nights and long thin cotton PJs on the odd night. I think the flare up happened at my Mum's due to the hard water.
That first nightie MissWooWoo linked to is lovely. I did have a look on Etsy but the cotton nighties seem to be for younger girls and seem to be ££.
