What do you wear on Christmas Day if you are at home with just immediate family?

That's it really. Am in bed poorly today with just the laptop for company, so thought now would be a good time to ask.

We have, over the past couple of years, started staying at home on Christmas Day, just us and the dcs.

My family pop round in the morning with presents etc and they are always glammed up in posh dresses, make-up, jewellery, high heeled shoes etc and I always feel such a frump for the rest of the day.

So, I have decided that this year will be different. Whilst I don't want to go the whole party dress and sparkly jewellery route like my family do, I would like to make a bit of an effort and at least wear something that's a step up from my usual school-run clothes, iyswim.

The thing is, I have lost over 3 stone since June and am just heading into a size 12 (started out as a size 18 wearing too-tight size 16's Blush) and despite looking at literally hundreds of clothes online, I don't have a clue where to start. I still have a large chest (32GG) but my waist has shrunk from 34.5" to just under 29" and my hips and bum are actually quite a good shape, probably for the first time in my life.

Recently I have been pretty much wearing all black every day, basically because I don't know what else to wear. I've been working out a lot and am pretty toned, so have been wearing black skinny jeans with either a back v-neck jumper or just a plain black long sleeved top. So I thought a bit of colour would be nice for a change.

I did buy myself a new bright pink jacket yesterday, which is a huge break from the norm for me and I am surprised at how much I love it.

Any advice from you lovely S&B ladies would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like you could wear whatever you want! It must feel great being a size 12 (or nearly there), toned too!

moosemama · 27/11/2011 16:26

Not really. I'm finding it really hard to get used to. I don't have a clue what to wear - am almost 42 and have been overweight pretty much since my mid twenties. A lot of things just feel too young for me and everything else seems like it would suit my mum better. Confused

I'm not really one for dresses. Was thinking of maybe just sticking with my black jeans and buying some sort of dressy top, but don't have any idea what sort.

Hopeless aren't I? Blush

If you are finished losing weight, could you do the personal shopping thing? It's been reccommended on here before, think
Most dept stores do it for free and would give you lots of ideas?

FurryFox · 27/11/2011 17:22

I am crap at clothes so no idea but just wanted to say well done on the weight loss Smile I really must sort myself out. You've done great, congratulations.

homeaway · 27/11/2011 17:24

Firstly well done for losing weight! How about treating yourself to a well cut pair of black trousers that are not jeans ? You could then wear a pretty blouse with a camy underneath? Add some nice jewellery, some heels and voila you have an outfit. If you buy a good pair of trousers you will be able to dress them down or up for any occasion.

Earthymama · 27/11/2011 17:29

Well done for weight loss!
How about a short skirt with thick tights and a wooly jumper a la Sarah Lund. It will look great if you go out for a walk in the snow!
Look online at all the catalogues and magazines full of Christmas ideas. Maybe some of clothes they feature will give you some ideas.

TapselteerieO · 27/11/2011 17:35

I actually feel more comfortable in a dress, no waistband or belts to worry about. So I will be wearing a deep red velvet dress from the Kew sale, £29, I am large of nork like you 30G, so I need a vest underneath it.

I would look at Dorothy Perkins for ideas, can't do links just now, it is a bit of a faff on my phone. Also make sure you have a decent bra, I tend to buy Freya, they are good for variety and fit.

Well done on the weight loss.

MunchingNoPickles · 27/11/2011 17:37

I dress up inc jewellery tho not makeup if us and friends, this yr could well be just us so have new fleecy pjs Wink

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/11/2011 18:04

I tend to do the woolly tights, mini skirt and jumper combo on Christmas day, or the jersey dress, tights and cardigan combo. How about a jumper dress and opaque tights?

SeeLyon · 27/11/2011 18:06

glittery knitwear

MindtheGappp · 27/11/2011 18:08

I have a red and black sparkly knitwear outfit that I put on for going to church.

If it gets too hot in the kitchen, I will replace with more casual clothes.

MrsCampbellBlack · 27/11/2011 18:16

Oh I knew seelyon would be along with her glittery knitwear Wink

Firstly - well done on your weight loss!

Secondly, like remus I will be in a washable jersey dress.

Reasoning that its comfy, if I get goosefat on it - which I undoubtedly will despite wearing an apron - its not a big deal. And its leopard print so still pretty glam.

But if you like black skinnies - I have some black velvet skinnies which look great with high patent heels and a silk shirt - but I couldn't be trusted in silk when cooking christmas lunch.

Do you have a budget in mind?

Trills · 27/11/2011 18:24

Do you wear "Christmas" colours?

I like the glittery knitwear idea but wonder if it would be wearable any day that is not Christmas...

Pagwatch · 27/11/2011 18:24

Yes. We put on lovely clothes and look all gorgeous.
It just feels like the right day to make an effort. I know that is odd as all we do with anyone else is walk the dogs. But we just do

MrsCampbellBlack · 27/11/2011 18:37

I agree Pag or it just feels a bit like any other day.

But then I never exactly need an excuse to overdress.

Pagwatch · 27/11/2011 18:43

Grin and Blush
yeah. Guilty too

MrsCampbellBlack · 27/11/2011 19:06

Trills - when is not the time to wear glittery knitwear!

Get with the programme Wink

I've bought this to wear with jeans & heels..black top.. its fitted through body so the bell sleeves are really emphasised... love it!

belsize77 · 27/11/2011 19:11

Mrs CB - Please could I ask where your dress is from? Sorry OP to hijack.

By the way there are some nice jumper dresses and thin jumpers about at the moment that have a glittery stripe in which would be good not just at Christmas but generally in Winter. They would be comfy but seem a bit more done up. I will see if I can find links.

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 27/11/2011 19:15

Pyjamas, along with everyone else.

MrsCampbellBlack · 27/11/2011 19:19

Its an oldish dress but will see if I can find it online.

Aha its this one but is much nicer in the flesh and possibly the most flattering dress I own.

MrsCampbellBlack · 27/11/2011 19:22

Oh nice top MmeCholet of course Smile

Whistles have nice sparkly knitwear and reiss and new look

moosemama · 27/11/2011 19:22

Oh gosh, thank you for all your replies.

Firstly, no I'm not quite done with the weightloss. I have just under a stone left to lose and am hoping to lose more inches by continuing to work out. So I don't want to spend too much.

I never thought I would ever wear a pair of skinnies, but actually find them really comfortable and so handy to just shove a pair of boots over for the school run.

Homeaway, I have thought about that. I had a beautiful pair or black wide leg trousers as a Christmas present last year, but have given them to my Mum, as they're miles too big now. I only got to wear them once as well. Hmm

I like the idea of a nice blouse, but can't seem to find any that don't have frilly bits or big neck bows neither of which work well with my chest.

Earthymama, I have been looking at a few wintery skirts, either in wool or cord, thinking, as you suggested, I could wear them with warm tights and just shove my boots on when we go out to walk the dogs. I was worried that I might be too old for that style these days though. Also, what sort of top could I wear that would dress it up?

I was looking at some of the sort of scandinavian/nordic style knitted dresses that are around, but not sure they're right for Christmas day. Ah, just Googled Sarah Lund. Have been looking at that sort of thing, but little less patterned.

There seem to be a lot of boxy shapes and loose dress styles around from what I've seen (although I could be looking in the wrong places) and whilst I love the way they look on the models, I know it sounds vain, but I kind of like to show of my waist a bit now I actually have one. Blush What sort of shape of jersey dress would people suggest?

I quite like This one but only in the black.

After saying I don't really do dresses, I am also quite drawn to this one, but think the neckline is too high for my chest, as I generally look better with a scoop or v.

I like the shape of www.asos.com/ASOS/ASOS-Knitted-Dress-With-Zip-Back/Prod/pgeproduct.aspx?iid=1704823&SearchQuery=knitted%20dress&Rf-300=1920&sh=0&pge=0&pgesize=200&sort=3&clr=Red but not sure about the zip or length. Could I get away with wearing over my skinnies do you think?

This blouse is lovely in both colours, but not exactly festive. Although perhaps with some smart trousers and a little bit - not too much of sparkly jewellery and some heels?
