Anyone got the Gok Wan wrap dress from Sainsburys?

I bought this today and have just tried it on. Tried is definitely the word here as the inner body-con suck-you-in vest is SO tight and uncomfortable I think i may be doing it wrong! Can anyone confirm if it's meant to go under the bust because if I wear it like a vest (over the bust) then I end up with NO bust as the thing is so goddamn tight!

Help me, oh stylish ones!

I don't have the dress, but I own a whole lotta shapewear (DCs have a lot to answer forGrin) and none of it sucks your boobs in! Defies nature belly in boobs out surely Smile

BeatRoute · 22/11/2011 19:41

So I should scooch the vesty thing under my 'bust', yes? Seriously, I took the damn thing off an hour ago and my ribs are still hurting!

I ditched the vest. I have sucky in pants instead.

BeatRoute · 22/11/2011 19:46

Did you find it nigh on impossible to get on, Carole? I had a terrible sausage moment where my arms were trapped above my head, bound by the damn vest. Scary shit!

The vest is at least two sizes smaller than the dress. I nearly gave myself a hernia trying to get it back off again when I tried it on. Epic fail, Gok.

nursenic · 22/11/2011 19:48

I cannot see what others do in him I am afraid. He does the same styling week after week.

Wrap dresses look best on curves anyway and should be bought slightly larger rather than just right/snug.

Gillybobs · 22/11/2011 19:50

I have a shoulder injury which requires physio and cortisone injections thanks to an..erm...incident with a shapewear vest a year or so ago. Evil things

Stop laughing

Moulesfrites · 22/11/2011 19:53

Yes the woman in the shop told me it went under the bust. This was after I risked an injury similar to gillibob trying to get it over my boobs.

youtalkintome · 22/11/2011 19:57

My friend was wearing it out the other night, she had it on like a vest but commented a couple of times that she couldn't breathe and didn't think she would be wearing it again.

BeatRoute · 22/11/2011 20:10

Thanks for confirming that Moulesfrites! I could wear it under my (barely there as it is) bust... but the pain from simply trying the thing on has made me decide just to wear my regular old heifer-harness (hold-yer-belly-in-knickers). The dress is totally the right size. The fucking vest thing is for some kind of small child...

no no. you don't pull shapewear vests on over your head. You step in them and pull them up. try, it's way easier.

CaroleService · 22/11/2011 20:17

I had to get my cleaner to help me in and out. I gave the vest to her - she being a 10 and me a 16. It works perfectly on her as a smoother.

BeatRoute · 22/11/2011 20:24

Thanks Hazle, I may be brave and give that a try (once my cracked rib has healed...)

Its such a shame that the dominant fashion message to women is about hiding, binding, suppressing our curves, our natural body shapes.

That's another reason why i dislike him. His mixed message about getting our tits out and proud whilst squashing every other curve in or up.

he's no women lover.

BeatRoute · 22/11/2011 20:32

That's a fair point Nursenic. The actual dress itself is a really nice shape with swooshes to flatter one's gut and all sorts. The vest thing is just a joke and the only place I feel i would need a bit of extra help is my gut, so I shall just wear my heifers (which are well older than Gok Wan...)

And i bet it looks great without the surgical truss lol.

The loveliest thing about a wrap dress is that it makes our tums look soft and rounded and womanly.

AgentProvocateur · 22/11/2011 20:54

Can you link to it? I've no idea what you're talking about, and I'm intrigued!

PastGrace · 22/11/2011 20:59

I haven't seen any of his things in store yet, but if I'd had that trying on experience I expect I would have lost heart and given up on the dress, even if it was nice.

I just do not like Gok Wan though. On one of his fashion roadshow television shows, he stripped the poor woman off, then put her in
A) magic knickers that went from tummy to knee
B) a "special" bra (?! - it seemed to have an extra thick band at the bottom, to squidge in the skin/muscle/fat there)
C) a WAIST CINCHER - as in a girdle. or a baby corset.

He then squealed "look at that SILHOUETTE girlfriend!"

Yeah, brilliant. Well done Hmm.

This is the frock.

I feel I need to point out that although I have bought a Gok Wan dress, I am not a follower and don't watch his shows. I found the dress on the TU clothing bit of Sainsbo's website whilst actually searching for a stripey fleece hoody for my 5 year old DD! His collection is the only thing on there and when I went to buy the fleece today I saw the dress on a big fancypants display at the front of the shop and it was so nice i bought it. I NEVER try anything on in store (and you wouldn't either, with a 2 year old son playing twist-me-up on the dressing room curtain) and thank God, cos if I'd had the sausage moment at Sainsbo's I would want to die!

nursenic · 22/11/2011 21:13

Pastgrace-

Totally agree. i saw that and he turned that perfectly nice looking woman into something approximating an off-white nylon sausage.

BeatRoute · 22/11/2011 21:13

(She's not wearing the vest...)

AgentProvocateur · 22/11/2011 21:40

Thank you. I didn't notice that you'd said it was from Sainsbury's in the thread title. Blush

It looks like it would make you a bit sweaty...

BeatRoute · 22/11/2011 22:41

Not sweat-inducing at all! (Unless you wear the surgical truss...)

Ooh I have got it and had the very same problem. What shoes shall I wear with it? Any suggestions as size 8/9
